Don't listen to other commenters, your voice isn't mediocre, you don't need to change how you present your personal thoughts. This isn't a meme, this is a retrospective. A real voice-over is much preferred, and natural intonation with how you feel on is out-right required for such a video not to sound actually stupid. Also, to this day, right this moment, after years of wandering back to Morrowind over and over, I actually didn't genuinely understand exactly how the combat was mechanically set up. I've obviously adjusted to the rule set, but it never really clicked logically. I've looked it up, too, it just went in one ear and out the other because I am an impatient idiot. Today was a rare day that I had my listening ears on, lmao.

Welcome back! I loved the first video in this series and I can't wait to hear your other thoughts. I love how conversational your style is. My suggestion is doing a video on itemization - like how it's a long process many players undertake in order to put together a set of Daedric armour, and how that adds an entire dimension to the RPG that many newer games lack.
@dosbueno2gud
@dosbueno2gud Год назад
Yeah I was going to do an entire video on progression and itemization, which matters because while I think the idea behind it is cool and it can work, the progression system in Morrowind is incredibly fragile and breaks down at the lightest touch.

You know, despite playing this game for hundreds of hours, I never knew (or cared) about most of this. I just beat the crap out of everything. You can basically stunlock everything with a high enough short blade skill. As for specific parts... for some reason the Redoran quest *The Mad Lord of Milk* always stuck with me, because the description for the path to Milk in the journal is _slightly_ different and thus more vague from the description you get from the quest giver. But, thanks to the Topic function, you can look at that description too. It could serve as an example of how the journal works and how quests in Morrowind require a bit more exposition and thought compared to the magical floating quest markers of later games, which are more convenient but less immersive, maybe?

I didn't get a notification for this but I did for the second episode, I'm really interested to see where you go with the series! Morrowind is a fantastic confusing enigma of a game.

It's so strange to hear that you didn't read the manual back then. Maybe you were younger than me at the time of release (13), but I remember digging into that manual every time I had to switch off the pc and go to bed. That being said, even the manual didn't explain all the mechanics in great detail, so the game was still quite cryptic in many ways.

Great analysis, I love your voice. One of my biggest gripes with Morrowind's combat even after I mastered the mechanics, was the massive health sponges in the DLC packs. You mean to tell me I just clapped Dagoth Ur's cheeks and now I'm getting my ass handed to me by some goblins in a sewer?? Whose idea was it to give a riekling on a hog more health than a literal god, plus the 60% reflect damage?
@dosbueno2gud
@dosbueno2gud Год назад
I have some massive complaints with the DLC. Especially Bloodmoon. Bloodmoon is a fantastic idea and a bunch of really fun quest concepts completely ruined by some of the most fucked scaling in the game and massively overkill enemy spawning.

Thinking about it, this is probably better to show new people interested in the game than a 500 hour long essay that only manages to get halfway through Vivec's self-made mythology about himself, or herself, or themself, or whatever Vivec's feeling that day
@dosbueno2gud
@dosbueno2gud Год назад
I am genuinely tempted to title an episode "The 36 Lessons of Vivec" and then its just a numbered list of 36 reasons why Vivec is a terrible video game city and game designers should learn by example what not to do. The cult of Kirkbride is alive and well and while I do like me some deepest lore, the deepest lore isn't what makes Morrowind good or interesting, its just what has allowed Morrowind to stick in people's brains for so long.

Its nice to see you branch out a bit. Its a quite enjoyable video. I just wish you mentioned how the bow is the real problem with MW combat since you have to hit the enemy hitbox, roll the die to hit, carry a lot of ammunition and not get on hit custom enchantments.
@dosbueno2gud
@dosbueno2gud Год назад
Was going for just melee here, I'll probably mention bows at some point when I talk about the thieves guild/Morag Tong. Bows are kind of a weird afterthought in Morrowind, most enemies just rush you down at full speed so having a ranged attack option is very rarely valuable.

Dagoth Ur really kwaa's my flanenzerg. This was a really good video and I liked how you broke down the combat stuff. If I could make a suggestion would be to try and add subtitles? I understand if that's a bit of a bother but I thought I'd put my two cents here. As for a suggestion to this series, maybe an episode detailing how with Morrowind the lore of TES became more unique? Like the lessons of Vivec and in general how alien Vvardenfell looks.

I watched through it with the automatic youtube subtitles and they were more or less accurate. Morrowind's lore and vibe are probably gonna get mentioned a lot in this series so do not worry.

Love the video man, looking forward to the next installments! The only feedback I would have is that your exaggerated comments like "we don't have to act like we're playing a nintendo ds in the trenches of ww1" and "your mineral based PC" didn't seem to add much. I get it if you're going for a comedic vibe, but the rest of the video wasn't really comedic and just informative. Again, I'm way looking forward to the rest of the video as I loved this game as a kid but never actually got all the way through it

Nice video, looking forward to more. Never really understood a lot of Morrowind's mechanics, so it's nice to see someone discussing them frankly from a modern perspective. Little bit off topic, but I've been wanting to give the game another shot after not touching it for over a decade. Are there any traps (e.g. the Oblivion leveling problem) that I'll need to go out of my way to avoid, or does it just take a basic understanding of the systems to have fun?
@dosbueno2gud
@dosbueno2gud Год назад
Don't go into random caves without being sent there on a quest until you are level 15 or so or have fully completed at least one guild/great house questline. Some caves have loot that massively fucks up the game's intended power-curve and can cause hyper-speed progression that feels dis-satisfying. I'm gonna do a whole video on that specific problem.

While I do REALLY like Morrowind now that I played it... Combat is completely scuffed (at least melee one) and I am not ashamed to admit that I put in a mod that makes the weapons always hit, but balances it in some ways. I just don't think a mechanic like that belongs in a game with this perspective and style of gameplay. And I am glad you are not doing a Patrician thing and say how perfect this game is for like 8 hours straight.
@courier665
@courier665 Год назад
I've been playing morrowind for about a year now and I even started playing Daggerfall: Unity My problem with Morrowind's combat is that it's very easy to become very overpowered very quickly. I ran into Dagoth Ur (The Building) and beat the living fuck out of Dagoth Ur (The spectral spirit that appears to you outside the heart chamber) and then ran up on Dagoth Ur (The God) and started knocking his lights out after destroying the heart. To be honest I really hated the hit chance system at first but once I made a build with proper stat allocation, sold the plate, and got a good sword, I started to reliably hit. To anyone who hates the stamina system go get Azuras star and enchant a ring or something with regen stamina your stamina problems will be no more
@dosbueno2gud
@dosbueno2gud Год назад
Yeah Progression in Morrowind is completely fucked and it will be getting its own video. There is a weird hyper-progression problem that is kinda rare in RPGs that happens really badly in Morrowind
@courier665
@courier665 Год назад
@@dosbueno2gud The problem seems to be absent from Daggerfall BUT I at least had video guides and the wiki to teach me the tricks of the trade in Morrowind. I've been playing Daggerfall for less time and the resources to learn about Daggerfall's systems are all hidden behind giant math equations and speculation so I could be wrong
@dosbueno2gud
@dosbueno2gud Год назад
@@courier665 Daggerfall also can have a hyper-progression problem, but you have to go out of your way to discover and exploit it and it isn't even remotely intuitive. Morrowind's hyper progression can just start because you walked into a cave before a questline sent you there.
@courier665
@courier665 Год назад
@@dosbueno2gud It's honestly really easy to get a truck load of money in daggerfall by only visiting crypts as opposed to dungeons and just running in and grabbing one of the loot piles and running out and repeating due to the fact that dungeons/crypts loot respawn the second you leave and return. Becoming a vampire can also boost your stats immensely and if done at the start of the game has no effect on your reputation and is actually pretty viable due to the fact that nobody in daggerfall cares if you're a vampire. It's hard to find vampires at level 1 but if you find one of the hidden witch covens and do quests for them you're guaranteed to run into vampires at level 1. Morrowind can become extremely broken by tagging enchanting at the start of the game Also the amount of quests I've broken or done inadvertently before even meeting the quest giver in morrowind is actually insane
@dosbueno2gud
@dosbueno2gud Год назад
@@courier665 Yeah both games have some progression problems, but "Run into and out of a dungeon repeatedly to respawn its loot and get infinite money" is way less intuitive and likely to happen to a first time player than "Walk into a random dungeon and accidentally find the Sword of Total Testicular Annihilation on the body of a random low level wizard, a max level artefact weapon that will now sap the challenge out of the game"
