Just a quick heads up that A Most Fearful Sacrifice is currently available (March 2024) via a Kickstarter reprint that will ship shortly after it ends (in April): www.kickstarter.com/projects/markhwalker/a-most-fearful-sacrifice-second-edition
This is my absolute favorite hex and counter game, bar none. The game play, the beautiful map, the large counters…I’ll probably be searching for years for another game that compares to this.
I can relate. It's such a marvelous gameplay experience. The other thing that surprised me is that it wasn't as complicated as I imagined it to be. The core gameplay rules are remarkably clear and easy to execute. I run into edge case questions now and then, but on the whole it's just so playable.
Hey ZB! Terrific playthrough - thank you so much for taking the time to show the game. So glad you enjoy it! To add to the notes below, the Confederate color is indeed "butternut" (we wanted to make the game look different than all the others and butternut is actually a more prevalent uniform color for the Rebels) and indeed the "Rally 'Round the Flag" card should not have been used (this is a simple way to make players keep brigades together without extra rules). Thanks again!
Thanks, Hermann. I'm just loving your game. Soooo good. :) And thanks for the clarification on the Confederate color, good to know. And yeah, total brain fart on the "Rally Round the Flag" card. I've played it correctly a good dozen times already, but my brain shrinks when recording videos. Thanks for the clarification, I've made a note in the "Known Errors" section of the video description. I'll be playing/recording the second hour shortly.
Thank you for playing this game. I would say that out of my entire war game collection, roughly 75% of those games are about the American Civil War and out of these close to half of them are about Gettysburg. Been to the battlefield park countless times, read so many books about it and have seen the movie probably more often than what’s considered healthy 😊 I place an order for this one, since I had miss the first release of it but I would still purchase a first printing if I was to find one somewhere. Watching a play trough of it is definitely what t I need today since I took time off from work due to being down with a pretty nasty cold, I can relax watching this with a nice cup of warm tea.
I hope you feel better, and hope the video can provide some distraction, Patrick. I'd recommend sticking with the 2nd edition, to be honest. The charts on the first edition are tricky to read, and the rules and scenarios have been changed a bit with the second too.
On the Fast Courier card - it has to be used for a division whose Corps card has not been drawn. So using it for the Confederates was valid, and Longstreet's card had not been drawn. However, when you drew the Union Fast Courier, Sickles card had already been drawn, so it would have not been useable at that point.
Aha, thanks! I can see what you mean now, I was misinterpreting that. I was reading it as a Division that has not been activated that is part of a Corps, but that doesn't make sense, as all the divisions are parts of a Corps. You're definitely correct. Thanks! I'll make note of this in the known errors section of the video. :)
Great playthrough. Thank you. I've already played 5 different G'burg games over the years so this isn't a high priority, but it's nice to see the creative juices are still alive in game design. I also really like CDGs. Tempting.
Really excited to see this. I have seen a lot of unboxings, but very little game play. I jumped on it on the latest Kickstarter. I have had serious non-buyer's remorse.
Great playthrough ZB! As always, the music, battle sounds, and your excitement and energy really added ambiance to the video. Just love this game which is visually stunning and plays so well. Keep up the great work.
I just received my kickstarter notification yesterday that my pledge for this has been paid, and I will receive my copy in April. These new games can't interfere with my shelf of shame playing, or maybe they will 😅
The color of the Confederate forces probably are in "butternut" colored uniforms. Gray dye was becoming scarce by this time to color the wool jackets and trousers. Great review again.
Thanks for the video and good job with the mechanics of play. Quite interesting to see you getting close to the historical battle. I just one item on the cohesion calculations for Robertson that would have affect the second round of the firefight. He should have been 3 instead of 4 cohesion. This might have affected him staying on the top of LRT. All in all great play and look forward to the next one.
Thanks! For Robertson's cohesion rating, thanks. At what point in the video was that? There was one point he was under a Rebel Yell that boosted his CR.
@@ZillaBlitz Oh wait, my confusion the initial cohesion was with Vincent's unit. But shouldn't the Return fire at 46:20 should be a 6+3cohesion=9 resulting in NE only? Robertson still needs to skedaddle, but not FF first and no effect on the retreat though. There is quite a bit going on there.
Yes, I see what you mean about Robertson's Cohesion rating. I forgot to subtract the additional 1 because they had been shaken just before that. I actually make the same mistake at 44 minutes too. Having said that, a 9 on the NE column for a cohesion test is the same as a 10, so it didn't impact play. Nice catch! I've added it to the Known Errors section of the video description. Much appreciated. :)
Love to sit up on Little Round Top and look out on the battlefield when I go to Gettysburg. I thought about this game but I will wait for the reprint of Three Days of Gettysburg.
I really want to go there now. I was there once when I was very small, really want to go again now after playing this game. I also want to reread Killer Angels.
@@ZillaBlitzIts a lovely place despite what happened there. I've been there many times. I do believe they are doing restoration to Little Round Top and Devils Den so no foot traffic is allowed there but you may wish to check on their site to see if its done. I've never read Killer Angels but I've been studying the Civil War for the better part of three decades. It was the first period of history I latched on to as a kid. Then came Classical Antiquity and the horse and musket period in general.
I've watched a couple of videos of the park and it does strike me as a beautiful location, as you mention despite its bloody history. I really have to make it a point to get there again. Thanks. :)
@@ZillaBlitzYou should if you are interested in the Civil War and can make the trip out there. Easier for me since I live close enough to get there in a few hours.
That's one thing that's surprised me a lot about the game. It was much easier to pick up than I imagined it to be, and this is coming from someone who hasn't played a lot of Civil War games.
Thanks for the feedback. :) For the music, the videos get better retention with music than without, but I realize there is a percentage of viewers who find it distracting. In case it helps, I have found that reducing the volume while listening can make the music less distracting.
Hmmm. Interesting question. The scale is different, I believe. This is 200 yards/hex, while Panzer is 100 meters/hex. But that aside, visually it seems like it could work? It'd be fun to try it.
Great looking game, but are you sure Robertson was eligible to use Rally Round the Flag? Doesn't he have to be stacked with or adjacent to another unit of his brigade?
Whoops! Yes, you're totally correct. Thanks for pointing that out, I've noted it in the "Known Errors" section of the video description. Much appreciated. :)
Definitely a small sample size, I think. In my experience units are getting battleworn and broken quite frequently. It can take a bit, though, as they usually have to work through "Shaken" to get to Battleworn in most cases.
