"A Mother's Secret" Gail Eastwood-Ritchey- ‘Geauga’s Child’

Nearly three decades ago, in 1993, two newspaper carriers found the body of a newborn baby in the woods of northeast Ohio's Geauga County. People in the community named the baby Guega's Child.
Twenty-five years later, the boy's mother was traced using modern DNA and family genealogy procedures. In 2019, Gail Eastwood-Ritchey, 49, was arrested for the murder of the baby.
Ritchey was identified as the child’s mother after a Geauga County sheriff’s detective submitted DNA to a public genealogical website, created a family tree of 1,400 relatives and finally narrowed the search to Ritchey, who told investigators it was her baby. She was arrested in June 2019.
Ritchey never told anyone she was pregnant, Bradley said, and did not realize when she sat down on a toilet at her employers’ home that she was about to give birth.
Ritchey put the newborn in a garbage bag after delivering the child at a home where she worked as a nanny. She put the bag in the trunk of her car. Days later, she drove a group of girls from the church where she was a youth leader to a weekend retreat, snuck away, and left the bag in a wooded area.
The baby boy was found lifeless in the street with his umbilical cord still intact. He had been attacked by animals and was missing an arm and a leg.
Judge Ondrey told Ritchey before sentencing that her newborn "didn't deserve what happened to him" and that she "took the easy way out" by putting the boy in a garbage bag and tossing it into a wooded area where his body was mutilated by animals and dragged onto a rural road.
"I think you knew what to do because you had done it before," Ondrey said. "Calling you a monster who deserves life imprisonment is not an exaggeration." According to the sheriff’s office, Ritchey also confessed to committing a similar crime with another child in 1991 in Cuyahoga County, two years prior to police finding Geauga’s Child.
Ritchey later married the newborn’s father. They have three adult children.
Gail was found guilty and sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole.

What I don't understand is this lady got life in prison and Skylar Richardson, who basically did the same thing, burying her baby in the back yard of her home, got three years probation. Both ironically took place in the state of Ohio.

 @marea Smele Of course the baby deserves justice. Both of her babies. So did Caylee Anthony. I think the comment was just in general. She's right. No one should speak to the cops without an attorney ever! That doesn't mean we feel she should get any special treatment or that the babies shouldn't get justice! It's just a fact. Watching these videos I see these idiots over and over again spill their guts to these detectives with no legal representation. That is just dumb. Guilty or not always get a attorney's advice first!!
@mazola5

@Tonytheknife - Exactly. Regardless of the crimes this woman committed....she would have been much better off to just refuse to cooperate with the police until after she had a chance to speak with legal counsel. It is everyone's right. They Mirandize you to make sure that you know it is your right. Nothing that anyone says to the police is going to be used in a court of law to help you. It specifically states that anything you say can and will be used AGAINST you.

She wasn't going to tell them about the second baby until they told her they were going to test her DNA against every baby that had been found. It was only after she had been caught did she tell. I don't believe she doesn't remember the things she says she doesn't remember. She remembers others things. Her selective memory is just that. Selective.
@ambrr_lily
@ambrr_lily Год назад
I'm curious if they actually came up with that possibility during the interrogation. She was so cagey about dates. Plus the certainty re the cord being cut. And she was so specific about other things, like what time the kids got out of school. As you said VERY selective memory. But I wonder if the possibility that there was another baby came up because of those facts? I KNOW, so it's easier to pick it apart listening now of course.

It's the misogynistic society in which we live. I was kicked out of my home when I was sixteen and pregnant, kicked out of high school, and my boyfriend and I were forced into a marriage. Instead of being supportive, my mother hated me for "bringing shame on the family," which was quite a joke if you knew my family. Rather than women being honored for bringing life into this world, we are spat on only if we are not married. We are called sluts and whores, and our babies are called bastards. When have you ever seen the involved male treated like a criminal because he fathered the very same child? The detectives did precisely the same thing to the woman in the story that she feared so much by literally shaming her twenty-six years after the fact. No consideration was given to her for the mental and emotional turmoil she suffered during that time, much less for the agony of giving birth alone in somebody's bathroom, for Christ's sake! Things haven't changed much over the past hundreds of years. Even today, males want to control women through their ability to give birth, which is blatantly evident by the recent changes in Roe V Wade. Now, a woman is literally being made a criminal for even attempting to take control of her own health during pregnancy. In Texas, she is criminalized for crossing a Texas border, and she can be stalked by anyone, with the stalker ultimately being rewarded $10,000.00 for taking her to a criminal court. And, as before, the biological father is never held accountable for fathering an unwanted child or a pregnancy that puts the woman's life at risk. It is the damning culture in which we live. We must never give up our rights to be treated equally in this society. We have the power of the vote and must use that power to save our daughters and granddaughters and beyond from the hatred and inequality toward women in this so-called free society in which we live. Vote the ignorant misogynistic dictators out of office. Do it for a better, more equitable life for our daughters and for theirs.

Had a 16 year old in my town that carried her baby full term, gave birth Christmas Eve with the help of her sister and put the baby in a bag and put her outside in the snow by a neighbor's fence. Don't know if the baby was dead or alive when it was born but she only got 5 years in juvenile. She's out and was able to have other kids. Personally I think she got off too easy. I got pregnant at 16 and it never crossed my mind to harm my baby.

Anyways, if this is done within something like 72hrs of the bby being born, they won’t even ask your name, and IF dropped off in one of those centers, in that timeframe, and the bby shows no signs of abuse-the parent cannot and will not be subject to arrest or charges of neglect/abandonment/ect… They do this to keep things EXACTLY like this from happening… That being said, I imagine because these are available, if someone DOES do something so disgusting-there’s really no defense… I believe a person can go to any hospital or fire dept or PD (although I see why they don’t stress the PD much) and do the same thing. After the second pregnancy, she ends up buying a house and getting married to the same man who would have been the father of these babies then goes on to have more children with him that she decides to keep. What would make her murder the first 2 babies? I know that's not a question anyone but her could answer. Why does anyone decide to kill another!? It just feels like something is missing. RIP to those poor babies. The community cared and had more respect for her second baby boy than she did! She could have dropped them off at a fire station, and those babies would have been adopted and living a full life with no questions asked. Why would she think murder was the only option? We're in our 40s now and I've had severe insomnia since I was around 10 and have always been jealous of her ability to just be able to lay down, fall asleep and stay asleep for 6 or 8 or 10 hours. @@detonatR True. She should have used contraception if she didnt want kids early in life. But to do it twice and think she could get away with it, is crazy. Especially when 20 years younger it was publicised about DNA and finding people through DNA tracing. But, it she was not fully matured in the head, sure enough she must have been mature enough to know dumping a baby was and still is illegal. This is such a complex case. Do I feel she did the right thing in both cases? No I don't. However, listening to Gail, really listening I believe in my heart this girl had more on her plate than she could handle. Her family dynamics left her so flat and unable to express emotion. It appeared to me she was in survival mode. Surviving the rath of her father and fearing losing the man she loved and in her mind that fear was real. Lack of self worth is destructive, if only in our own minds but more often than not it affects every aspect of who we are and how we come to terms with things going awry; in this case Gail trying to figure out how she can live up to her father's expectations without bringing shame to her family and how she can let Mark know without her being the reason he may have to put his plans on hold for a while. Gail had to have experienced some serious emotional trauma and she chose to shoulder this single handedly all these years. How different her life would have been had she not felt the need to cast off her own flesh and blood to maintain the parameters her father set up even though he was a miserable alcoholic. Gail didn't have a safety net. I don't believe life in prison will do anything but satisfy the people in this community who want her hide. Getting professional help and then having her work a community program that teaches young women they can have options and having them learn to take back the power to do what is right and good and moral for the little babes born in to so much emotional conflict. This is a very sad story.

Gail made terrible decisions but why… that is so important and I want to hug her and tell her I’m so sorry she was not equipped with the resources she needed to handle this properly. This may sound crazy, but hear me out- Assuming this woman, and others in this similar situation are clinically ‘normal’ (whatever, you know what I mean), and you put yourself in her shoes, at her age and during that time; scary for sure! I’d be nervous even now! So, I get that. You’d have to find a certain type of clinic that would keep you anonymous and adopt out your baby or whatever other government programs existed at the time. If you had money, maybe the other option. Still, those would be YOUR confidential records. You could have delivered on your own, I guess and dropped it off at a church, hospital, police station, etc. leave a note, or not. Leave it wrapped in a clean towel where it’s warm and leave it where a person will come across it in 1-3 mins ensuring the safety of the baby. HOWEVER, none of those options sound ANY scarier than knowing that you’re going to give birth to a live baby at any point in time, any place, potentially with anyone and then what?! The baby still exists. Why choose the latter option? We have every scare and anxiety factor, fear of giving birth alone, embarrassment of giving birth with someone there, an emergency happens, etc!! Look at the 2 options, seriously. Does the way in which these women handle or deal with the inevitable cover up of their babies, simply come down to the lowest form of human laziness?? Of course, there is some other psychology involved here, but it is the laziest option if you have no attachment and just want it done, gone and over with, yet it holds the HIGHEST punishment; even the threat of that happening! Meanwhile, the second one was a breeze, right? So it seems. Even the way she described the first time… seemed simple enough to me! Truly awful. Please understand, I’m not making light of this in any way. It’s simply a way of dealing with the fact that these things REALLY happen. She killed 2 babies and has now destroyed her husband in more ways than one, her adult children, maybe grand children and probably her own parents. Yeah, I don’t know. If you got this far, thanks! 😬 Take care, everyone. 🖤

@bonnieconzen788 while I think I understand what you're saying, she still gave birth to two babies scared or not she still gave birth lol. Not only is she a cold blooded murderer but she’s also a liar. Absolute bs that she doesn’t remember if the baby was alive or not. She obviously held and saw the newborn in order to place it in the bag. I find it very hard to believe that she doesn’t remember.

Wow! A Google search of this story and the countless hours that went into finding out this angel boys ancestry, so overwhelming! The detective said he would come in in the middle of the night to talk to people in other countries to ask them to help! Just tragic! Thankful for DNA! She is where she belongs!!! Nasty! It’s totally different then the Richardson case!!!! In so many ways starting with she did it TWICE!!! Just a gross human!!!!!!🤢

Just curious here- how does this align with those who are staunch "my body my choice"?? They asked about the father- and 'didn't he have a right to know he was having a baby'? How is this not a sh* show of confusion when a) you kill a pregnant woman and you've murdered two people, b) men have no choice when a woman wants an abortion but they're also given sympathy when things like this happen when it's literally the same thing, and c) it's okay to mutilate a living/growing baby in the womb when you don't want "it" and no one arrests them- but also people are upset when this woman didn't want 2 babies and she also called them "it" & she gets life in prison and everyone shuns her? PICK A LANE. It's either right or wrong to kill the innocent. You don't get to randomly decide on a Tuesday afternoon which babies get to live or die and when fathers deserve the respect of fatherhood.

I can see how this could happen when young girls get pregnant. My father always told me if I got pregnant, I would be kicked out and my mother said she raised her own kids so didn't plan on helping me raise one. But she was a grown woman, and did this not once, but twice at age 21 and 23. She sits there calmly saying that it has not bothered her all these years to return to that area. And if her father was so awful and she was so afraid of his wrath, I doubt she would have moved in with him a few months after killing her second child. I doubt her father thought she was a virgin when she moved in with her BF. And she denied doing this also at age 21 until she knew she was caught

She gave birth in 30 minutes. She could have dropped it off at a fire station or even a gas station in that same amount of time.no one would have had to know. They only found out through family dna because she tossed her child in a trash bag and he was found in the middle of the road ripped apart by wild animals. Had she left it at a gas station - kid probably wouldn’t know who his mom is now. They looked into this because it is that heinous and disgusting. No excuse for this. Shame on anyone who defends it.

She's very meek and mild. Idk her situation back when she did that. I feel sad for her. I do feel that her sentence was WAY too harsh compared to other people who have done the same thing. I am the same age as this lady. My husband and I have 3 grown children that we had while we were young. Ours were born in 90, 92, and 94. I distinctly remember that during each of those pregnancies being asked if I had had any other pregnancies, they would ask how many pregnancies and how many babies we had. Thankfully, I had 3 pregnancies and 3 healthy babies. We have been married almost 34 years now, and I definitely remember those questions like it was yesterday. I feel like this woman has had some type of trauma to be able to separate her emotions from what she had done. I feel sad for the babies, but I still feel really crushed for this lady as well. 💔🙏🏻 I have to say that I feel extremely bad for her husband. Again, I firmly believe that this lady went through major trauma as a child. She is obviously mentally ill.

The baby being “tossed away” like trash… is bad enough… but… what makes the story even more troubling… is her constantly calling the baby an “IT”… 😞 Heartbreaking 💔
@vickipeace917
@vickipeace917 Год назад
Also her "not remembering" if the babies were moving or making sounds. I can MAYBE believe one of the 2 were stillborn, but not both. This woman went on to have a set of twins and another baby? Her kids were healthy...that I just don't buy. One comment here said she felt bad for her and yeah, I had a moment here when I was like oh wow, she was afraid of her father BUT...sitting through this interrogation she has to be one of the coldest people I have ever seen. Not only no remorse, but not one iota of emotion on her face. STONE COLD. I can guarantee that if it would have been just the one child maybe her family would have forgiven her but a second child? When she said there was another, my heart sank and all I can think about now are those poor children in bags and how they passed away. Please lord, I hope they are now angels in your kingdom and have no memory of their short, cruel life. 😢

What a cold, withdrawn lady. If her husband is the type to take advantage, she must have been a doormat during their marriage. She has absolutely zero remorse or feelings about the two babies, her flesh and blood, that she left to be eaten by animals and die. I don't think she ever gave it another thought honestly. The cop asked her how she felt going to the camp where she left her baby years later. She shrugged her shoulders and said, it's a camp. Cold hearted woman.

Am I going to jail?’ I watch these interrogations and when they’re going south like this and Sarah Boone for example you know they are thinking about it but it’s almost like if they don’t bring it up maybe it won’t happen.🤔

Bolanos’s sentence for killing her child was standard in the U.S. But in some other countries, there are laws recognizing that a woman who has recently given birth has undergone biological changes that may make her more vulnerable to mental illness. Approximately two dozen countries have such “infanticide laws”, including Brazil, Colombia, the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, Japan, South Korea, New Zealand, the Philippines, and Turkey. These laws are designed to allow for more lenient penalties in cases where a court determines the postpartum mother suffers from mental illness. Exactly what those penalties are varies by country.
