I own an espada xl and about 40% of why i do is for my collection. The other 60% is use. The only use it gets is use as a mini machete for clearing trails while hiking. But i will say this, i used to be a street food vendor and worked late night/early mornings and carried large amounts of cash. 3 different times several individuals tried to rob me. All i had to do was pull it out. I was never robbed. Even an untrained individual can easily do major damage with this knife. Luckily it never came to that. The size in and of itself is a deterrent.

I thought to myself, an espada is basically a voyager XL on steroids. Mine is the XHP version and I really like it. Both knives can be pocketed quite nicely in my right side back pocket of jeans.

The Rajah II is a great large folder. Bit of an unsung hero really. It was the first bigger than usual folder that I'd ever owned, the lockup was and still is incredible, and it has I 4 or 5 grip positions. It's great fucking knife, and you can stab with it because the tip is very easy to index into an effective thrust. The full Flat V grind is so well suited for this multipurpose knife, it's a grind that is so much stronger than the Hollow grind. It would have worked very well with a Sabre grind with the full Flat V grind for the secondary bevel aswell, but it's just fine the way it is really. You can see the Kukri inspiration for the design straight away. Great knife.

There's an interesting history to that knife design. "The Manual of the Baratero" deals with the use of knives with that profile in 19th century Spain. There are historic European martial arts practitioners that train to fence with knives like that. I've seen antique Spanish folding knives that are even bigger than the Espada XL. There's obviously little practical use for a knife like that in modern times, but I've used the G10 version as an effective machete for clearing black berry vines.

“The Espada XL: It’s like Gaydar for Kyles” I feel like that is the intent of the knife. They know their target audience. I think I found the purpose of the knife, After Lyn sold cold steel, he also sold his soul as well. His Soul was too powerful to contain so Cold Steel using their mall ninja ninjutsu they forged his soul into horcruxes. The Espada XL is fragment of Lyn’s soul, sold by cold steel to scatter it to true believers across the world. Perhaps to appease it, perhaps to contain Lyn’s true power.

This was one of the funniest knife reviews I've ever seen. I like Spanish Navajas so I have coveted one of these things for several years. This came up and I watched, laughed like hell all the way through it. I have to tell you I have a Cold Steel sword, a friend that was an enthusiast recommended I buy through him when he was going through a divorce. Said there was a sale on seconds, he was placing an order. So I have a Wakashishi or what ever its called. It's like a four foot long razor blade. I used it to trim an arborvitae shrub in front of our house. It's no joke swinging around a four foot razor. It cuts whatever it touches. Watch enough movies ... light sabers takes it to the extreme. You have to be really careful. I have a little Joker Jerenzana that I just love looking at and using. It's almost 10 inches long open, and too heavy to carry around all the time in my pocket. I keep it open on my work table and use it to cut string when I sew leather or open amazon packages. It gives me great pleasure. I think you should use your Espanada to cut meat. Big knives are fun to cook with. I do a cut on pork tenderloins that makes it a long thin strip, tell people its rattlesnake. Thank you for the humor. The AI robot advice at the end was classic.💯💥

Honestly, I started collecting when I was about 12-13 years old, started out as I'm sure many enthusiasts do, with flea market rubbish and gas station zombie hunters. One day I bit the bullet and spent the most ridiculous amount of money I had ever spent on a knife at the time, and ordered a C.S. XL voyager for £68.00! This was back in 2006-07, and man, when I received it i was blown away, i had no idea knives could be like that, solid lock up, horrifyingly sharp out of the box (at least compared to gas station knives) My spending habits are now through the roof, but I still use that voyager XL. As my knowledge on knife steel etc increased, I drifted away from Cold Steel as every other knife seemed to be AUS 8. I got the espada XL as a birthday present and saw it was XHP and also saw they use a lot more of other types now which peaked my interest again.

I am a knife collector, I live in Wyoming. And I have bought the G10 version of the Espada XL. And I am getting it for self defense. You see 95% of the people who pull a knife to rob you,, use the knife to intimidate you. You pull out your Espada, and I am pretty sure the guy trying to rob you will leave, in a hurry. Even if he still attacks, you had some pretty mad skills on those bags. Specially the one you tossed into the air then slashed. Not bed, Not bad at all. My personal favorite folding fighter that they make is the Luzon. 6" blade for easy pocket carry and less exposed grip an adversary could grab, wicked sharp and slicey/stabby, very affordable but tough and chipping/snapping resistant blade unsuited for rough service work but great as a weapon, only real problem is the lock, but even that bests many competitors. I've never owned one of these but above a 6" blade with a handle that doesn't fold in on itself like the benchmade LFK, I see it as either suited as a novelty or as a hard chore knife for those who prefer a folder.

It's around the same size as my Bahco Laplander/Silky folding saws ;)

This is based on a read fighting knife from Spain called the Navaja. That was a big folding knife, although with a different styled blade.

Yes, the blades on the Navaja, where a tad longer and not as deep. So much slimmer, but they where only made for fighting.

Back when I was in school we called guys like that "chads". They drove around in a loud single cab dodge with a tap out sticker, wearing affliction shirts listening to the band Hinder.

I have one of the blacked out, all G-10 Espada XLs in CTS-XHP. Honestly? It's in the "haha, BIG knife!" category for me, but there's really a third category I fall into more than that or the people considering using this knife for self-defense (I have a CHL and firearms training for that, thank you very much!). Said third category is the conversation piece. This, my Large Sebenza 21, and my Ruike P801SF (of all things) seem to be the knives people pay the most attention to. The Sebenza because I explain how it was the measuring stick for so many years, the P801SF because it's a FFG 14C28N flipper steel framelock for $30, and this because it's, well...an Espada XL. It's the big, goofy knife that everyone wants to see my do yardwork or break down cardboard with. And yes, I would honestly say this has helped people get into the hobby when they clearly want to see something really different. Living in a college town with a Newman Center where the guys carry knives and want a good knife/are ready to upgrade from a Ganzo or a Byrd or a SAK, I'm happy to avail my collection to them, and for me, if it puts a smile on someone else's face and maybe gets them interested in a more useful Cold Steel like the Recon 1, American Lawman, Mini Recon, Ultimate Hunter, etc., then that's awesome.

I live in fairbanks AK and I carry mine around more than you would expect. But its been awesome for hunting (no i don't do any butchering with it) we have mostly short scrub brush up where the caribou live so an axe is overkill and a machete is bigger and heavier and I don't want to always have one hanging off my body. This knife can split small bits of wood very well, dispatch game animals and cooking tasks and I don't need a sheath.

I subbed for the the rock called bricky, he understands me. Crocodile Dundee’s disappointment never said the words. So sad. Here in real America we use the XL for pig roasts. We have them next to our Big Trucks full of Beer. We sleep on Giant Hooters and shoot Desert Eagles and call it fun. So yea this is a knife!

I have the XL and the L models of the knife in the S35VN. I have a leather belt carry sheath for the XL. I carry the large model much more because the size is more manageable. If you are wearing loose shorts, the XL will beat the crap out of your thigh if you have to move fast. I typically wear tactical shorts so when I wear those I can carry the XL pretty well in my pocket. I have the AUS10 model as well in XL, that one I will wear in my pocket once in a while with the tactical shorts. The main drawback of the Large model is the small pocket clip.

The notion that knife self defense requires anything other than a knife is strange. Perhaps. Too scary to even contemplate. Defending your self with a knife requires a knife and a situation where you are so afraid you use a knife for self defense. What is much scarier is when my mom told me she had to defend herself with hat pins on occasions. That being said this a ridiculously large blade that made fast work of those bags of soil for the sophisticated sensitive vulnerable guy of the twenty first century pretending to concede (I hope)that this has some deserved and inherent element of social condemnation that we should acknowledge and care about..... Good marriage advice. I may need an Espada Grande just to use as a marriage barometer.
