A lot of people get confused by what anode and cathode mean. In terms of diodes it's not strictly correct to say the cathode is the "negative side" but it's good enough for basic understanding. However, the confusion arises when considering things like cells, batteries or power supplies that also have an anode and a cathode, but for those the anode is the negative side. The way the terms are defined depends on conventional current flow. Anything that current flows out of is the cathode and anything current flows into is the anode. So for a diode connected in-line with current flow, current flows into the end connected to the positive side of the circuit (the anode) and flows out of the end connected to the negative side of the circuit (the cathode). But for a power source like a battery cell, current flows out of the positive electrode (the cathode) and into the negative terminal (the anode).
Another superb video. Love the addition of the music as well. Dare I say that at times watching you solder was even relaxing!? Also, I’m no expert, but I think you had a visit from a feline falcon. Beautiful plumage
Interesting build. I do like that you always show your happy little accidents, makes me feel a lot better about my struggles with a soldering iron. Oh and I think I've seen a similar weird bird in the tree in my garden recently.
Welcome to the end of the video club! 😁 I seem to be making a bad habit of it lately. I went for such a long time without doing anything like this and now I cant seem to stop myself 😆
You have become one of my favorite YT channels amongst AvE, This old Tony and the likes! Main reason are your strange birds on trees pictures! (where can I get my internet points now?) 😜👍👋
Waiting for the tape to load is the best part of a Speccy and the hypnotic effect of the loading bars and soothing squeals Loved the bird at the end - An Avian Domesticus Felinus I believe? Been watching your vids of late, and brought back a load of memories of my 48k and C64 - now lost never to be seen again Maybe I should build my own...
You are a true gem among RU-vidrs. Not just retrocomputing RU-vidrs, but, well, RU-vidrs in general. (The weird bird in the tree agrees, I can assure you.)
A harvested GAL, what a nice way to say it, a bunch of Chinese fundeling through the garbage, cooking all the PCB's and brushing up all components, selling them als New Old Stock and unused or scrubbing off the numbers and logos than relasering a higher classified type number on it.
I think the last time I struggled with this I turned to my Uno and it solved all my problems. Probably should start with that next time. I think I saw someone had made a breakout board that made connecting devices to it much more convenient
Back in the day (yes, I am that old) I used to repair spectrums for a living, so I am much more at home with through hole. I have had a go at surface mount on some scrap boards, and it went ok. Have not worked in the electronics industry for 30 years so its just a hobby these days (work in a shop now). On through hole, you don’t put solder on the iron first, but for SMD’s it the best method as long as you use additional flux on the board. Anybody that’s says they have never put a diode in the wrong way (or a socket)in my opinion is being economical with the truth. You should always use leaded solder for this work, unleaded is not good for hand soldering. Unleaded solder is also weaker and can crack very easily. Yes I did see the weird bird, in the tree! Anyway, good video as always, I wish I had the money to do more retro stuff.
Nice build and I love da mistookes 😜 I made a plain old Dandanator Mini just recently, took a bit of extra work to get it working with a ATF22V10 instead of a GAL22V10 but i totally love it. The single ROM can get a decent no. games on it to focus on, Snapshots are cool and I didn't have a joystick port either so all good AAAND I didn't spend very much on it as was putting in a separate PCB order andway and had some of the bits, love it!
Hi great watching your channel love your little mistakes on the way which makes it even better. Were can I get one of these to either build or buy complete ? Looking forward to more content from you 👍
Hi Lee. Thank you for the nice comment. These are quite difficult to buy as the creator has restricted the commercial sale of them. If you can find a group buy that's the usual way. I plan to make a batch of another version myself at some point. Probably the best way to be involved with that would be to join my discord and hope I find the time 😆
SMD can be a lot easier than putting resistors in holes and flipping the board over all the time. My new favourite soldering stuff is low temp paste that melts at 140 degree. You don't have to crank up the tempts to rework
@@MoreFunMakingIt I guess it would depend what it's used for. I only use it on smd and still use normal solder for connectors ect. I would say I am Pro AM !
11:17 soldering like that is only bad for through hole work. For SMD soldering it's quite normal, as you are using flux on the joint. This is also how drag soldering works!
Thanks Rocky! Getting old sucks. Catches up with you in all kinds of ways. I'm lucky my hands are so far still mostly steady. My eyes on the other hand. Starting to need some serious glass between me and the thing Im trying to see now!
It doesn't matter how you apply the solder, as long as everything is drenched in flux, all is good 😄 Correct orientation is more important 😅 Keep going, ya old plonka! Cat in the tree
Watching you make those mistakes is very frustrating but that DIP switch... what on Earth were you thinking? Oh and...any consensus on what the Weird Bird was?
I'm sure at the time I could have explained a very good reason why I put that switch in that way. Was over a year ago now, so no chance I can remember. Made me chuckle when I finally realised though 😆 The best suggestion I have had so far is a really ugly Magpie
Eventually the MORE FUN CORPORATION will cover all subjects. Political Election Rigging - More Fun Fixing It Funerals - More Fun Toasting It National News - More Fun Brainwashing It
I think keeping the switch hidden if your not planning to program stuff might be better as it is less to catch on things when its stored or when your taking power cables out. Have you submitted that bird pic to the RSPB they might be able to ID it for you.
1206 is bloody massive! Depends on what you usually solder I guess. 0805 and 0603 are my go to. But you need to have small solder and a relatively big tip. Btw live the music, did you also write that? Another tip for LEDs look at the “bulb” the biggest is the negative (kathode). Wait what??? There’s no DB9? I’ve always called the joysticks and the RS232 9pins db9 too 😂 Well I’m almost 50, not going to change my habits anymore 😂 Nice bird! 😂
Agreeing that 1206 is bloody massive! 0603 is easy enough without having to work under a microscope, 0603 on 0805 footprints is a good choice for hand soldered prototypes. When working with lead free tin, there is a lot more going on than meets the eye, there is a reason you get flak for your choice of method.
Great Video and perhaps i didn't quite get the gist but where can i obtain the kit to build as the links take me to the github etc but I cant see any means to purchase the board or the components?
Thank you! The boards have to be ordered and built yourself. Mostly people do a batch of them as a group and share the cost. Its a source of great frustration that the list of components is not something easily found on Github. Almost like a deliberate barrier for entry.
Square hole, round hole... I don't care what Google says, I always check with a multimeter to be sure, in case the board designer decided to go the other way around. And you're not the only one that says "Dee-Bee-Nine", as I do too, even though I know it's incorrect. And people understand what I mean when I say it anyway, so where's the harm? I have a Dandanator here and it's a good device, but my gripe with it is with multiload games having to be especially prepared, each game has to be prepared in its own way, and there's only like 5 games out there already prepped. The bird is the word!!
What ever is wrong with "Dee-Bee-Nine"? I have been calling these sockets by this Monika for (quite literally) decades, what do other people think it is supposed to be?
I must admit I havent come across the multi load problem yet. Mostly because I've not made enough time for gaming in a while! And there's no harm in whichever way we want to call a thing a thing. Although there are bits of the internet that think otherwise. I dont take any notice of those though, I just like to make fun of them!
Entertaining and educational, as always, Lee! And is that a rare ebon-hued catcatoo, I spied? I'll have to get out my Field Guide to Furry Fledglings to be certain.
I thought you was jokingly using the word cannibalised, but I forget it's the correct term for this sort of thing? ...you should a body part for youtube thou
Hey mate! She's very much a Magpie, always nicking post when it comes through the letterbox! The flux is Topnik. I've managed to make it last over a year so far. Although I do use a flux pen for some stuff.
Cool video once again, very cringe soldering the socket, the LED and the switch in the wrong orientation , oh and a mention to Felix who identifies as a Falcon...
Went to your second channel and found I was already subbed - awkward! Anyway I’ve had a combo dand and multi in kicad for a while that I must finish! Maybe I should call it weird bird 😂
