A Myth Some Trucking Companies Want Their Drivers to Believe. It may be hard for some to wrap their heads around this concept, but some trucking companies literally hammer this point home, time after time, year after year to their drivers.
ALWAYS REMEMBER, JUST BECAUSE SOMEONE SAYS SOMETHING, IT'S NOT NECESSARILY TRUE.
In this case, this applies.
Some carriers will tell drivers when they ask to be paid for delays or waiting time, that it's INDUSTRY STANDARD that drivers are only paid to DRIVE!!! EVEN worse, many drivers believe this.
I've always hated that phrase INDUSTRY STANDARD!!! Show me where it is written in the official trucking handbook!!!
There is no such thing of course.
It's this mentality that some carriers use to brainwash drivers into thinking that they really are of no value, unless the truck is moving. Nor should they be paid for their time, unless the truck is moving.
That is an antiquated way of thinking and DOES not apply to the job of a truck driver.
To add fuel to the fire, we received a series of letters from a woman who has a family trucking business in New Jersey and has DEMANDED we stop telling drivers they ought to be paid for waiting time.
In her letter also, sadly it speaks volumes about what she REALLY thinks about her drivers. She lists numerous things which really agitated her about drivers, and to summarize, she has no respect or concern for her drivers whatsoever.
No driver appreciation day expected over at that company any time soon.
This is the mentality that some trucking companies WANT you to believe... in fact they count on it.
Well, it is NOT true. Don't buy into this trucking industry MYTH. It's garbage.
You deserve to be paid for your delays and waiting time. You are with the company truck, trailer and load and are ultimately responsible for it. So if you are at work, you ought to be paid. PERIOD.

It should start at 50 cents per mile for the newbees , living in the road and in a truck and finding good food ( not grease) not an easy life

All the 'Middlemen' in the trucking industry become complacent in their part of the big picture. You can book and dispatch a million loads, but if there's no Transport Professionals to DELIVER their load to the end user customer... NOBODY in the chain gets paid! The dispatcher gal isn't going to hitch that 53 footer to her Prius to transport it, neither is the booking agent, and can you even imagine their anxiety attack on their first scale house inspection! We are not 'drivers' like Uber, we have the strictest and most extensive rules and regulations, and carry the most liability and responsibility of anyone on the road, we are Transport Professionals that the Entire chain depends on. Without us delivering goods and services to every corner of the Nation, the U.S. economy will absolutely crash. They'd better start respecting that fact.

The DOT tells truck drivers what to do, the DOT needs to require trucking companies pay drivers for all the time that they are on the job, including time that drivers are forced to sit and wait.

We need to call out these companies. You should name the company, I would. Drivers should get paid for all their time or quit immediately. There are plenty of companies that pay all your time.

What gets me with the cpm companies how can a driver survive when average weeks are now 2000-2500 miles with regional sometimes lower.Swift offered me a regional run recently with average miles per week at 1300 You get a company like Transam that only pays there drivers .34 cpm. You would be better off finding a $10 hr job and staying home.

The bottom line is, if the Federal Government cared about the drivers who haul this countries freight, they would pass laws that force carriers to pay drivers for their time. If we all turned in 2 week notices at the same time, we could watch the industry squirm as the clock ticked down. As an organized group, we have the ability to shut down the economy in a heartbeat. I remember thinking when I first found your channel, this guy has the potential to receive a lot of hate mail, from the carriers who are habitually bending drivers over.

Pop's here just dropping a little knowledge on you. Owner operators who lease their trucks to a carrier is cutting his/ her own throats. Get your authority and all that goes with it and get paid the full rate on the loads you haul. It's not that complicated guys. You'll be glad you invested in yourself and so will your family. Brokers love truckers who pick up and deliver on time and are willing to build a working relationship with them. You can short pay your bills of lading until you build up a steady cash flow. It's doable. Heck who knows you may just land a nice contract and do a dedicated route. I did back in the day. Good luck !

Just started working for new carrier on a dedicated account. I now get a flat $195 a day (before taxes, of course) even on days like today in which I've literally sat for almost 24 hours waiting on a relay. I don't think I'll ever go back to being paid by the mile. Unfortunately if you're still inexperienced don't even dream of landing a gig like this, you've gotta do your 1+ years of OTR like everyone else

The problem is all drivers can't get on the same page. We need to stand together and say enough is enough,!

Good videos Dave. After 20 years off the road, I was itching to go back out and your videos helped me to mentally prepare for the bs...especially having to restart at ground zero. But, the game is still rigged and the pay isn’t worth giving up all my leisure time hobbies to chase the carrot. When the industry gets serious about fair pay, the talent might come back.

I hope every new driver and hell, even older drivers sub to your channel .The lady you mention could be the dispatcher for a company I used to pull trailers for. I was working for a tractor service and this female dispatcher thought she was very knowledgeable, I knew better but one day she insisted I prove it. She asked me to look at two trailers and tell her if they would work as a B train. I looked them over and told her they would not work together. She doubted me and instructed a company driver to hook them together and take a turn around the yard. When that was done she was convinced that I was wrong so she got a highway driver hooked up and sent him to Saskatoon. He made it to the road where there was a steep approach from the yard to the road and when the lead made it to that ramp it took the nose off the pup trailer. I had hung around, off the clock, just to watch. No "I told you so" was required as she watched several people picking freight up off the road while I leaned on the counter and smiled. No surprise she hated me from then on.

Out of 5 companies I've worked for, only one of them cared about driver retention. I was doing flatbed, i was paid for my loading and securing time. They made sure we were paid for what we did.

It is not just the trucking companies that do this. Retail has been doing this for years. You show up at work and for the first half hour to one hour you prepare your station for work. You clock in when the doors for customers are opened. At the end of your shift you clock out and then do the tasks required to balance out the cash register and transfer the receipts to the financial department. So, every day you work for up to two hours with no compensation. Amazon warehouse workers complain that after their shift they have to be "searched" to prevent theft from the facility, but employees are not paid as they wait. When I first got out of school I worked for a downtown store as a "porter". I had to arrive at 8-8.30 and sweep and dust mop the floor, but I was not allowed to clock in until
