A Needlessly Deep Dive Into Disney's Princess Jasmine's Songs

Princess Jasmine is known as one of Disney's most iconic princesses, from her costumes, to her fiesty personality, to even her songs... Yet, despite being such an iconic character, Jasmine never received a solo in Disney's first adaptation of Aladdin (1992), leaving her without a song that was iconically and wholly hers. Fortunately for her, nearly every adaptation/continuation of the story has featured some kind of musical signature just for her, from 'Call Me A Princess' all the way through to 'Speechless'. But, which of these songs works best for Jasmine? How come none of the others became as associated to her as 'A Whole New World' did? Why is no one else making the brave choice to talk about this super controversial and interesting topic? Tune in to find out!

Even if they went with her original characterization, maybe they could've had her be spoiled at first but then later learn to love the poor Aladdin for who he is, giving her some character development. Then his fear of being found out would've had more weight and Jasmine would've had to grow along with the hero.

I always hated the girl bossing of Jasmine in the live action remake movie... but after discovering the "call me a princess" number from this video, I kind of like the idea of Jasmine starting out as a little bit spoiled and wanting more then gaining a sense of responsibility after experiencing the streets of Agrabah. Seeing herself as a ruler instead of a princess could have been more rewarding for her character. Just a random thought, love this channel so far!

Well, that is Hollywood for you - and a huge chunk of American popular culture in general, for that matter. We've come a long, long way since Shakespeare, whose plays were populated by VERY flawed heroes. In your average family-friendly comedy, the sympathetic male characters will be as close to perfect as possible without becoming nauseating, and the sympathetic female characters will be even more perfect - and, of course, to the point of nausea. I actually passed through a stage in my youth when I resented and even hated women, because movies had taught me that as a boy I was morally and intellectually inferior to girls, and needed their help in order to shrug off my boorish ways. Of course, a lot has changed in our post-PC culture. Now not only are female characters portrayed as flawed far more often, but it's also a little more common now for women - even beautiful, "perfect" women - to be humiliated in various slapstick ways. I've seen female characters vomit, belch, fart, have their pants fall down, get punched out, and in extreme cases even be killed for the purposes of black comedy. Even so, it's still the case that if there's a choice between portraying either the guy or the girl as the loser, the girl will usually get off easy.

Ironically Jasmine has always been my all-time favorite. She is assertive and sees through everyone’s facade. And her outfits were the best. And also her hair is just wow.

I love that this is a video. The problem being that Aladdin is the protagonist of this story, so HE gets the I Want song (in One Jump Ahead Reprise) and there's not room for both. (Which, of course, you said.) The best Jasmine song, though, hands-down comes from Twisted.

Low key kept waiting for Twisted’s Jasmine to get a shout out, especially after seeing those clips in the beginning but great video. I watched some of those awful direct-to-video Disney movies and I still stand by Lion King II and at least most of the songs in the Little Mermaid sequel. Would love to see a video discussing how Nala was done dirty by the live action remake, her song Shadowland would have been such a perfect addition - I’m a huge fan of the Broadway Lion King

I think that “A whole new world” could work as her I want song even though Aladdin sings with her, because she also wanted friends and connection. It makes sense that she wouldn’t want to be alone when talking about her dreams.

I love, love, love the inclusion of Twisted here. I'm a huge Starkid fan and "Everything and More" is the best "I want" song ever. It starts off with a stolen line from Ariel's "I want" song then turns the dial to 11 with an F bomb. "You're probably thinking: She's got everything. Well it's true, 'cause I do. But so the fuck what? It's not enough! ... I just want Everything and more!" *chef's kiss*

Wow the early draft for Aladdin sounds like those Eastern Block fairytale movies from the 50-80s, particularly like the 1956 GDR adaptation of the Brave Little Tailor where he ends up with a poor girl instead of the spoilt princess. Arguably that idea fits the Brave Little Tailor better though, because in that tale the princess is actually a spoilt brat as opposed to Aladdin where she is a non-entity at best and a victim at worst. Probably for the best the Disney movie got such heavy rewrites. The endproduct got the social justice theme across without being as heavy-handed about it. Another great summary and about a topic I haven't thought about before. Keep up the great work!

with the 20:00 acknowledgement of how much these new disney sequels/remakes want to make *something* out of the dead mom trope disney movies themselves have been so mocked for.... it made me think of how apparently dead mom issues will be at the forefront of the snow white remake 🤨 that and the fact that her I Want song is all about finding love, which i doubt will be left as is for the remake.... i dont envy any of the 3-to-8 writers the movie will probably end up having edit: after seeing all the possible jasmine songs i cant say i particularly love any of them, but among all of these Call Me A Princess and Desert Moon feel like an actual shame that they didnt get the chance to shine. the Call Me A Princess reworking to be her plotting to get rid of her suitors and scare them off feels so clever and funny, even if it doesnt sound very good to me i would have loved to see a scene in which aladdin actually plays along with it and sees right through her spoiled brat persona. i see why it was deemed not enough of an emotional song to establish her wants, but having a disney princess be established through a funny number instead of a heartfelt ballad would have been pretty refreshing. and, concerning Desert Moon, i so wish it had been kept instead of the bland Speechless pop track. it could have had a tiny but appropriate "dead mom" acknowledgement while also helping create Agrabah as a real place with a culture, having folklore songs that mothers sing to their kids, regardless of social class. it could have helped aladdin and jasmine find common ground, be good reprise material for when their romantic bond is established, and serve as a potential I Want song for jasmine herself, with the themes of love and independence that the song could present. a real shame it wasnt used 😔

OMG I can't believe that I didn't know about the Aladdin on Ice special!! I'm not surprised that they made one, as Disney was capitalizing on figure skating specials at that time (and still are to this day), because while the Icecapades had been a thing for decades at that point, for some reason the early to mid 90s saw this sudden boom of popularity for figure skating - especially for the Winter Olympics! I remember it so vividly because I was so obsessed with figure skating at the time, I wanted to learn how to do it and become a professional Olympic figure skater for a brief time! I remember always asking my dad to put floor polish on the kitchen floor after he'd mop it so I could slide around in socks pretending to be a figure skater, I watched the figure skating portions of the Winter Olympics when they happened, my grandmother had recorded the broadcast of The Wizard of Oz on Ice starring Oksana Biaul as Dorothy and Viktor Petrenko as The Scarecrow back in 1996 (although I swear it was 1994 and the internet is just wrong lol) and on the same VHS tape, she had managed to record the Disney's Champions on Ice special that was aired on ABC (which the internet claims was filmed in 1995 and why I'm convinced that the Wizard of Oz on Ice was filmed in 1994 because I remember it being within a year of each other) celebrating their movies, as well as a segment dedicated to Indiana Jones to celebrate the opening of the Indiana Jones and the Temple of the Forbidden Eye ride that had recently opened in Disneyland and the segment had Scott Hamilton and another well-known male figureskater and female figureskater from that time that were in the skit with him... and I think there was a segment where they had Elvis Stojko (pronounced Stoy-ko) performing this skating skit where he gets abducted by aliens-- I swear I'm not making this up! I don't know why something like that would be in a special celebrating Disney, because I don't recall any mention of their ExtraTERRORestrial Alien Encounter show that would have been opened in WDW at that point to tie into it, but I swear it was a thing! There was also a beautiful segment where they had world-renown figure skating duo and irl married couple Ekaterina Gordeeva and Sergei Mikhailovich skate to "Colors of the Wind" to celebrate Pocahontas (which yes, having Katia a Russian white woman play the role of a Native American girl who actually existed and would have historically been around 12 - 14 when she met John Smith is pretty yikes), but is remembered as the last time the couple would skate together as Sergei passed away before the special was finished filming at the age of 25 of a heart disease. But, as you can see, I was ALL about the 90s figure skating craze going on! Scott Hamilton, Kristi Yamaguchi, Michelle Kwan, Oksana Baiul, Viktor Petrenko, Elvis Stojko... they were all idols that I looked up to and wanted to be like! And Kristi Yamaguchi was my favorite skater at the time - so my inner child is extremely disappointed in me for not having seen this Aladdin on Ice special! 🤣

Yeah, those parts of the video brought back memories I haven’t thought about in at least 15 years. I was 5 when Aladdin first came out, and then my parents took me and my little brother to see Aladdin on Ice. My dad bought us a plastic curved sword that had flashing lights, and you could see a bunch of kids waving those swords around the stadium throughout the show. Then I remember my brother and I got into a little fight when we got home, so he beat me the shit out of me with that plastic sword and left some NASTY welts on my skin. Oh boy, did he get in trouble for that-I had never seen our dad so angry before! Okay, well… I typed this out with the intention of sharing a funny story, but now I wonder if I might be the only who finds it funny, lol. As adults, my brother and I are best friends to this day!

I love love speechless, especially the first one. I think you are underestimating how it fits into her interactions with other characters. Perhaps as someone whose personally been abused by men and been put in her place I relate to this more. Getting some of her own agency is now a big part of the core of her character rather than freedom, removing some more bratislava interpretations of her. It truly is empowering to watch and see her finly being respected. I think it has and will touch a lot of women and hopefully inspire young girls to truly own who they are over the oppression of others judgements and expectations. I think ij this way it can also be applied to other people who are marginalised by others because of something about them e.g. race, religion, sexuality, subculture, financial position, "just a housewife", "just a nurse not doctor", being disabled, being neurodiverse e.g. autistic etc. So many people are dismissed because they are seen as lesser or wrong. It truly is inspiring to see jasmin break through this. And to see her "I want song" becoming the basis for the moment she truly does this makes the song so much stronger. It's placed just where it needs to be, as the tension has mounted to the start of the final climax and o hopelessness has been reached, she then defies it and wins out. If the situation wasn't so dire the song could have lost some of its punch toreally hone home the point and make her transformation truly a key part of the plot and its messages. If it was early in the film it wouldn't have that impact. It helps her rise to the point where she can impact others even though they are intimidated to do the right thing whi h is no easy task. Its this song that is the driving force behind her father finally seeing her true worth and respecting her which is why he makes her sultan. Having it twice, near the start and near the end, brings lovely symmetry to the film too and emphasises that her role is important to the story as a whole. Sorry if I went over long here, used to study film&literature abd have a tendency to deep and honestly (clearly) I am very passionate about these two solos. I hope you give them another go and rewatch the film xx

I still joke with people that the 2019 live-action remake really should have been titled JASMINE, given the extent to which Jasmine elbows Aladdin himself out of the spotlight. Shifting the focus onto her was bad enough, but portraying her as some sort of budding political strategist was unforgivable. She is supposed to be an innocent girl, and they turned her into Eva Perón.
