A comprehensive review of scientific evidence found that hatchery-reared young salmon have a much lower survival rate than young wild fish, and can harm existing wild salmon populations.
NRW intends to phase out salmon stocking and close its hatcheries at Mawddach and Maerdy.

It would be nice to actually see this scientific evidence. Have the NRW actually taken any known wild or farmed (returned to sea and back) salmon from the river Taff or any other river in Wales to compare the difference and if so how do they know the difference between the two ???

Scientific evidence or opinion? If NRW is so concerned about Welsh migratory fish, how come the budget for enforcement is so minimal? If the few fish that make it back to Welsh rivers were not decimated by poaching en route, they would then be able to make their redds and undertake spawning. In ten year's time, this decision will probably be reversed because the state of migratory fish stocks in Welsh rivers will be so dire that hatcheries will be reintroduced and heralded around the table as a brilliant solution.
