The colour/B&W switch just sets the value of bit 3 in the SWCHB register, it's up to the programmer to implement the functionality.

The cartridge thing is what makes me want it. enough consoles with one thousand games on them. I just ends up scroll the games on those. This is more like it actually was to own consoles back then. Few games but more time in those few games. thanx for the review.

Any games that use the more complex mappers, as in the Atari games that most people want to play, won't work. It's a neat idea but it almost feels like they threw in 7800 comparability to make up for the fact the 2600 comparability is really not good - it only plays like half it's library.
@NeilFeltham

I have had my Atari + for a week now and I think it's brilliant. The main motivation for getting it was to protect my original woody, jnr and 7800 consoles. It's an Atari console so by default, it has earnt it's place on my Atari display when I get around to extending the self. I like the fact that it doesn't have a power brick. Let's be honest how many power bricks do we have kicking around the house and why add to that? I just take power off from the USB socket from my TV (No more cables running across the floor) and it works just fine. The emulator software will hopefully be upgradable (via said USB) so there is potential scope for updating the emulator software and hopefully improve compatibility.
@medes5597
@medes5597 10 месяцев назад
Unfortunately unless they pick a different open source emulator and replace it with an update (which apparently is possible although vanishingly unlikely) or come up with their own and update it, compatability can't improve The way the emulator is designed, it's precluded from ever running the more complex carts. Not a bad product for fans and enthusiasts but that emulator decision is weird as hell. Don't know what they were thinking then.

Loving your videos but where's the third video for your A3000 please? I've just watched both parts and was really looking forward to a third and can't seem to find it. I'm a massive fan of the BBC/Acorn machines and the Commodore Amiga, I refurb them myself and have an A3020 to work on at some point, an A420 and a I've just received a rather pimped Risc OS beast which I'm looking forward to working on. I've got an Atari 2600 which I've had stored in the garage and it's the very same one I had as a kid. Thought it was safe but my garage got flooded and I forgot it was there and sat in water for almost a month - it's going to be fun getting that up and running again, if it can be salvaged that is.

I've bought one, and the paddles, for a couple of reasons Nostalgia: straightforward enough. I've been playing on Stella for years, but I love the old Atari joysticks. I'd been looking at the Flashback Atari units, but the reviews of the paddles are terrible, and I really want to play Kaboom! with proper controls. Plus, getting the right Flashback with paddles is next to impossible. Price: if I were to buy an original (woody style, not Junior), without even a mod to allow me to connect to a modern TV and maybe a couple of games, I'd be over €150 right away. Then games on top of that. Prices of anything retro gaming related in Ireland is ridiculous now, and is not getting any better (been that way for years) Finally, and really importantly, I do want to wave a soldering iron about! It's a hobby I've been interested in for a long time, and so I've ordered a soldering station, some Eproms, a bunch of capacitors/resistors from Amazon and 10 Atari 16 game 4k pcbs from PCBway. This looks to be a nice beginner level entry into soldering/hobby electronics, and it would be great to build my own library of bespoke carts (Activision, Paddle games, etc)

@another3997
@another3997 10 месяцев назад
I doubt most companies expect their products to be reliable for "decades". Very few offer more than a 12 or 24 month warranty. Why would they want to spend money making sure it will work for 10 or more years? I certainly don't think 1970s Atari were even considering the 2600 lasting 10 years of regular use... an awful lot of them died long before that. And in terms of price, adjusted for inflation, the 2600+ is far cheaper than the original hardware.

I wished I'd kept my Lynx and Jaguar as well as the 2600 I was given as a teenager which eventually went pop, it'd be great to be able to have a shelf of retro Atari machines. The usb port will be broken in no time. It's not protected and even pointing a bit upwards. Clearly the Achilles heel of this machine. The hdmi port might not last very long as well. A solution to this design flaw would be to use angled connectors. Hint to the marketing people: include an angled hdmi cable in the box rather than a straight one. Same for usb-c. Other than that I do like the idea of bringing this piece of nostalgia back on the market.
@jacquesmertens3369

The problem with the original is, that it only connect through RHF (or whatever the english wording for antenna is :) ). I couldn't get an original Atari 2600 to connect to a modern PC (I don't have a TV). The PAL signal is so bad of quality, that the USB WinTV grabber didn't catch the correct signal. I would have to use an old VCR to connect to, so it can "fix" the signal.
@another3997
@another3997 10 месяцев назад
You think the PAL RF signal was bad? You ought to see the NTSC standard. It makes PAL look good! If you have an original VCS/2600, or certain old computers, buy a slightly older TV second hand, for next to nothing. Some people just give them away. They were able to cope with most RF signals, and will have composite and SCART too.

@another3997
@another3997 10 месяцев назад
@@fhunter1testTo be fair, FPGA often isn't a cheap option, but there are several existing FPGA based products that could be utilised in a retro style case. As for bare metal emulators, the problem is, it's hard work to create and then maintain. Writing low level hardware drivers (CPU, GPU, RAM, USB etc) for a particular board isn't trivial, and if all you're gaining is a 5 second boot time instead of 15 seconds... it's hardly worth the humongous effort.

@fhunter1test
@fhunter1test 10 месяцев назад
@@another3997and FPGA developers cost RealMoney™. It just surprises me - Atari 2600 is late 70s tech, there is nothing here in this console that can't be emulated by almost any low end fpga (except for, may be, hdmi output, but that can be solved by separate chip). So that is basically 2/3 chip solution - level shifter/protection for cartridge, fpga and a chip for converting rgb -> hdmi. We played way back in 2007 with Cyclone 1, it cost around 30$ back then and it fit a small 32bit cpu, a bit of RAM for it and some peripherals with a bit of space to spare.

it has not return, it has never gone away, what about all the ATGames Atari Flashback Consoles that used Atari IP, Atari only ever make one console in there life time really from when they were created in 2001, Atari dies in 1998 and went bankrupt so between 1998 and 2001 Atari didn't exist until Infogrames bought the Atari PI(Jack Tramel's Atari) and renamed themselves Atari so they are still the same company, just with a different name, they as well only have rights to the 2600 and its games, they do not have the rights to Atari Soft games, that was sold off by Time Warner to Warner Brothers in 1985, it was not sold to Jack Tremiel, thats why they keep reinventing the same console over and over every year, it about time they tried to make something else now after this, the Atari2600+ is a Flashback console, it even use the same hardware and uses the same emulator Stella, its the best console they made so far, but thats because it was made by PLAION, the creators of THEC64(Retro Games LTD Firmware/PLAION Hardware and Packaging, Ben Jones) not Atari, it only uses Atari IP like the Atari Flashbacks do, they have made the same(Atari2600) console for 20 years from 2004, most probably PLAION made all Atari's Game Cartridges too because they do not make hardware, the Atari VCS was made by a hardware company too, not by Atari, they are mainly a games publisher. I'm definitely not nostalgic about that joystick. I owned a 2600 and all, but when i gamed on it, i preferred to plug in a Sega Master System gamepad. Anyway, i get my nostalgia fix from the Atari 50th Anniversary Collection, and that has Jaguar and Lynx games as well. I have a 2600 sitting in my media room, and i can pretend just fine that the 50th collection is being played on it. I have no use for a $100 box that has components worth $10 inside. Of course, I'm 42, and I don't have bookoo bucks to burn. I'm pretty sire this only costs as much as it does because most people 50+ have too much munny. Atari is just a greedy name, and the Atari of today has no connection to the Atari that used to exist. Some asshole just bought the rights to the Atari name and are milking sentimental suckers because they can.

The Master System came out about a decade AFTER the original Atari 2600/VCS, so hardly a fair comparison. Back in 1977, the Atari was one of the first programmable home gaming consoles, and those iconic joysticks were therefore some of the earliest on the market. All of it was new, so it's hardly surprising things developed in the following decades. And the whole point of a business is to make money (or is that "munny"?). Do you work for free? Or are you greedy and want to make money? Whoever legally owns the rights to a company name, patents, copyrights etc, can choose to market whatever products they think will sell. Who are you to say that people are "suckers" for wanting such products? Besides, it seems YOU paid money for some remade Atari games... so you must be a sucker too. A great many companies use historic brand names to sell things, despite not being the original owners or creators.

If there is a market for such things, why shouldn't a company produce them? Sony and Nintendo have done it with "mini" consoles, not to mention a large number of smaller companies. A lot of old games get a makeover and are sold decades after the original. The existence and popularity of computer and console emulators shows a lot of people want to re-live some of their earlier experiences, and the retro computer scene is thriving.

I am 53 and the first ever games I played were on the original 2600. I still wouldn't buy this. It would only make sense for people with large collections of original carts. Atari could at least offer a more "modern" console that would play really enhanced, newly developed, but still retro type games - along with the original carts. Now they will probably try to capitalize on 40 years technology by selling carts of old games with a laughable amount of ROM, that cost peanuts to produce, for a premium. Thanks, but no thanks.

No, It's not worth it. 👎 Stick with real hardware... No load times, full compatibility, it'll last a helluva lot longer and you'll be keeping stuff out of the landfill. Buy a 7800, mod it or buy the 7800GD and be done with it. 👌
