A new canoe (Hou 13) on the river Yeo in North Somerset.

A paddle up the river Yeo in North Somerset on an early spring morning in a spanking new Hou 13 canoe. River levels are high with the recent snow melt and frequent rainfall, therefore the current was fairly strong and more effort than usual was required to paddle upstream to the weir. Coming back downstream was a breeze running with the flow and took barely half the time it took to paddle upstream. Once under the stone bridge heading west it’s possible to paddle for hours all the way to the estuary on the Bristol Channel in peaceful surroundings encountering very few if any people.

Never a truer word spoken than at the beginning of this film.

I think that something like 95% of the waterways in England are off limits to boaters/canoeists/kayakers etc, it's outrageous, how can someone claim to ‘own’ a river. There's some debate in parliament coming up re. access to waterways in the UK, lets hope something changes like in Scotland with the right to roam legislation, I don't hold out much hope given the bunch of donkeys that are currently in power.

Yes, everything enclosed, we are the disposessed in the 'land of the free', constrained by "these stinted bounds" (Locke I think).

What a heart-warming film. Beautifully filmed and edited. Thank you for 3 minutes of absolute peace! I'm very interested in your Hou 13 too. You look very comfortable and stable in it. Best wishes, Jim

Nice one Jim, top comment. Yes, I've only had the Hou for a few months now - it's very stable compared to boats that I've put up with in the past. British made & quite affordable too. There's another 7 minutes of absolute peace featuring the Hou in ‘return to the Wye’ on my channel which documents my most recent trip on the river Wye.

I think that's why people reach for the high ground Andy. it tends to be the only place without hindrance. Fabulous new canoe. I'm sure you're going to have great fun in it. Beautifully produced video. All the best. Mark

Thanks Mandy, yes, it's an instant stress reliever - the minute you get in the boat and paddle away from the bank. Roll on summer !

River Yeo @ Congresbury, the park by the stone bridge on the A370 that goes over the top of the river, parking etc... gets a bit busy in the warmer months tho!

Andy, how do you find the stability when stepping out? I am looking for something to replace my OT Pack, which was really a “slide your backside over”.....not nice when launching platforms are wet. Are you able to easily stand and get out of the Hou?
@MrAndyballard
@MrAndyballard 3 года назад
It's fairly stable James, just keep a foot along the centre line when getting in and out and that usually suffices. It's also stable on the water and in white water too, I've done grade 1-2 rapids on the Wye and I usually get down low on my knees. I highly recommend the Hou 13 👍

Hi Andy - nice looking canoe. I hope this doesn't sound like too daft a question ) but it from a sit-on kayak owner) how comfortable is sitting with your knees tucked under particularly for an hour or two? Cheers Mike
@MrAndyballard
@MrAndyballard 3 года назад
Thanks for your comment Mike, not a daft question at all. I actually use an inflatable sleeping matt folded over which is REALLY comfortable to kneel on. Then for a change of position after an hour or two I'll sit on the seat with my legs stretched out then alternate between kneeling and sitting. I find kneeling the best though. Check out a few more of my canoe trip vids on this channel - all in the Hou 13. It's a great little canoe.

@@MrAndyballard Thanks for response Andy which makes a lot of sense. I expect kneeling helps with oomph and control. I've already watched some of your other videos by chancing on the one of you and your friend on Glasbury camping trip. We actually did a day trip on our sit-ons from there to Whitney on Wye. Coincidentally our first ever paddle on them was from Congresbury after collecting them from the factory in Clevedon. We did have a Canadian for a while (Coleman I think) but found it a bit tippy compared to our Islander sit-ons. I think that's maybe par for the course with Canadians. I sometimes think about having another bash though so we can take our dogs camping. Mike

@@mikedowning4603 Don't let the Coleman experience put you off Mike... they have a pretty bad reputation as a cheap & cheerful ‘hire boat’. A proper well made Canadian canoe is a pleasure to paddle and be in (not all all tippy). My mate has just ordered an 18' Novacraft because he has 2 daughters and a dog. 18‘ is a bit excessive for me but you sure can get a lot of gear in it.

@@MrAndyballard - thanks for the advice Andy. I think we need to try one or two (decent) canoes once the Covid situation allows to see if we (particularly my partner) is more comfortable/confident re the tippy issue and also so if we can get our dogs to settle without constantly trying to abandon ship as they do with the sit-ins! I guess stability is a matter of trade off with manoeuvrability in terms of hull cross section and rocker. I'll be looking at more of your videos later. Cheers Mike

@@MrAndyballard I own a Coleman barge and although I’m keen to try something better, I have had worse hire boats. It’s not at all tippy ….. until it suddenly is! I guess that’s what they call poor secondary stability. Nice vid and a nice part of the world. Cheers.

Hi Andy Sorry to bother you, what was the poem you were quoting. Regards Steve
@MrAndyballard

No worries at all Steve, glad you asked. I had to really think about that! I'm pretty sure that it comes from this book: Hudson, W. H. (1909) ‘Afoot in England’ J. M. Dent and Sons. I got it after reading Marion Shoards book: ‘This Land is Our Land’. This comes at a time when this Gov are trying to criminalise trespass. Not many people are even aware of this, which is staggering (but then again, most people wouldn't give a damn either).
