After interviewing captains from around the world, I found a captain to help me complete my sailing circumnavigation on SV Brick House, after 13 years of sailing around the world with my late husband, Patrick Childress.
Captain Michael Hayward was right here at the Royal Cape Yacht Club (RCYC), and is packing up his life to sail away with me. It is really hard for me to believe that I could get so lucky so fast after losing Patrick. It sort of freaks me out when I look from the outside in...i. know this is really really fast, but it's feeling pretty right too. I was pretty determined and focused about what I wanted in a new sailing companion. I didn't wait for it to drop in my lap, thats for sure. Life is too precious to wait around for a miracle...
I will always miss Patrick, every single day, and he will always be within me, guiding my every decision...but with the pressure of immigration, being in a foreign port on my own, I had to put a move on things. That circumstance is likely a blessing in disguise...pushing me forward faster than most newly widowed women could ever cope with. You do what you gotta do I suppose...and I need to sail onwards...soon. And I will. Who knows what the future really holds...but then, do you ever really know?

I started watching Ben and Ashleys videos a week or so ago. Ive been looking at a change in my life. started looking at tiny houses a while back, then rv’s and boats for full time living. Im now convinced I need to live full time on a sail boat traveling. Watching is so inspiring and I want this for me and the person I love. I wasn’t sure how boat toilets worked haha. I found Patricks video about them, then The next video played was about your loss of Patrick, it made me so sad. Im glad your doing ok and decided to continue with your dream with a great companion. Keep it going girl!

Hi Rebecca. Trying to find someone who is compatible has many differing emotions and feelings , but i think for me the most important one you must always think about is, how that person speaks to you in a time of confrontation. If there is compassion and no raised voices , that person shows respect , and with respect there is love.

I was told once that those that have a wonderful marriage with joy, happiness, respect, and love are more apt to take the chance of finding it again. They know what it feels like and can feel/see it when it comes their way again. I believe that your decision is a reflection of your love for Patrick - and says so very much about how special your life with Patrick was. Wishing you much happiness.

I didn’t start watching your videos until after Patrick was gone, but having watched back several videos, I know Patrick is happy, he is happy for you !!! I married a widow. I did not know it at the time, but her husband had been killed just a few weeks before I met her. I pursued her and was rebuffed, several times, politely. Finally, a friend of hers told me the sad tale of her husband's death. It was horrific and not for public comment. I kept myself occupied and after a few years again struck up a relationship. It was slow going to be sure. Many people warned me away from her as she was "damaged goods" and I would always be in the shadow of her first husband. I will not lie and say it was all easy going, but we are now in our 22nd year together, happy most days with 2 great kids. Companionship with someone you love and trust is a great joy. Have a great sail, be safe, enjoy. I don't think Patrick would be upset at all, there's a lot of life let in that boat, and you. Both should be out on the water, going places.

My wife and I are both sailors and doctors. I am in the ER my wife does Hospice. We both could use some time on the water, hoping to head south along the US east coast as soon as November comes. It took me almost a month to finally watch this video and I'm glad I finally did. I have been married to the same woman for 40 years in December and I would be a complete basket case if she was gone . Good to hear you are carrying on with your life. I can only hope I could be this resilient to such a devastating loss. I corresponded with Patrick a few times when you were dealing with your blister issues. I am glad to have had the opportunity to have correspond with him. Good luck, wish you the best.

That seems like a toss up. Not gonna try to try someone I don’t like. But if I like them...probably I will try to trust them...Both are important without a doubt. And in today’s world, you really have to consider both, a lot!

Of course Patrick will always have a place in your heart (and quite rightly) but, as you say, he would want you to move on with your life and live it to the fullest extent possible.

I am one who waited too long to get my boat, now I have to wait to see what I can do! No problem, it may not be a world cruise, but I'll look for my boat right here, and cruise around my lovely Vancouver Island. It's the size of Taiwan you know! But you're back and that's that! Rebecca, I’m so happy to see this video and learn to hear about Michael. Welcome aboard brother. I’m sure Michael knows to be him and try not to compare himself to Patrick. There is only one you, know who you are and how you are. And the great quote, “it’s none of your business what other people think of you.” And as for the advise, see how you two do in a good and proper upset. And what it’s like after that. Kaleema and I try to stick to a 20 minute rule. Take twenty minutes, at least, then come back to communicate. Monitor how you two do in on-board emergencies. How we communicate in times of urgency and after that are crucial. In the Navy we called it debriefing and lessons learned. What happened, what went right, wrong, and what to do next time in a similar situation. Fair winds and following seas my friends. Big love from Nathan on Vancouver Island, Canada. 😉🙏🏼❤️🇨🇦

Thanks, I still tear up too..watching this video, other videos, and videos with just Patrick fixing something. I think I always will. He would definitely without a doubt want me to be happy, so I’m trying hard to do that. It’s not all rainbows and unicorns for sure...but I try to think positive, and live for today.

I really appreciate that you shared this story Rebecca. Me and my husband have a big age difference in between us, while we liveaboard our trawler we are restoring our motorsailer to travel around the world this spring. No need to say that when i saw your video about Patrick, i cried all the way through it. Even now writing this comment after watching this episode i'm crying my eyes out without really any reason lol. I was thinking about you all these months. When i saw this video being released, I was not sure of what i'm going to see in it. I believe you are a very strong woman and I'm SO happy that you are having a good time right now. Age difference can play a large part in a relationship, for myself and Suzie we have an age difference of a number of years I'm the older one). Trust in each other has been our bond. Suzie does not have much sailing experience but she has shown me more than once she is more than capable. An example was recently on a trip home with forecasted adverse weather coming in. While I was off watch, in rising seas, increasing adverse conditions and failing light Suzie did a complete sail change on her own. When I came on watch she mentioned what she had done and just said that I needed my rest and she didn't what to wake me. We have a 3 masted schooner rig vessel. Robert and Suzie aboard "S.V. Having been around a time or two, I say that we are always afraid of the bad ones, being screwed over and hurt. Thankfully the world is really full of good people outnumbering the bad apples by a lot. As we grow older, we also learn to see the signs of bad intentions or hidden agendas. Mostly I have learned though, that good have prevailed, love and respect and trust is prevalent over the opposite. I wish you all the absolute best, and I think your criterias are absolutely spot on. Hi Rebecca. I'm sitting at my computer here in U.K. with rather damp eyes of happiness, as I enjoy your You Tube clip and I see your beaming smile and the new glint in your eyes. Cut the new Captain crap in having found Michael, as I have every confidence in saying that you are looking for more than a Captain.......and I do so hope that you have found exactly that. I am equally confident, that if Patrick is looking down on the current scene, he too would hope that you have found a new soulmate. Filling Patrick's shoes is a very tall almost insurmountable task, but I wish Michael fair winds, safe sailing and the determined courage to make your heart sing again.

OMG! This brought tears of joy to my eyes and my heart! Ahhh, I feel you had some encouragement from Patrick to go help him with his lines. Hi Rebecca, I’ve only recently been watching your videos. I live in Cape Town and am a regular at Royal Cape Yacht Club as my 2 brothers and friends sail there. Am listening to your advice: Don’t wait! If you have the opportunity to go, go! Don’t wait for your dreams to fall out of the sky. I’ve met someone who seems to fit your checklist of 10 (which I applied rigorously to him! 😂) and he’s recently bought a boat to sail around the world - pretty much following your route from here. I’m not a sailor but I have sailed, done the competent crew course etc. Am terrified. Would love to chat to you by email or other method to get more advice on taking this journey. xx

Rebecca, as a guy, let me offer one small piece of advice. Patrick was a great person, but sadly he is gone, and if this new captain is going to be the ONE, then make that commitment, and to do so I think you have to put Patrick behind you. Like you say this could be your last sunset, well let it be with your new captain, don't make him have to compete against a legend, it will not end well. This new captain looks like a great person, so look forward, good luck, fair winds, and as the saying goes "may your best day of your past be the worst day of your future."

I agree!!!! Life is short. Life is the length of the dash mark from born date to death date on a gravestone . I’m 42years old and I continue to see people I went to school with passing away. Change your sailing channel title. And anyone who knows loss will agree that mourn, cry, overcome and live. There is no perfect boat or captain. But there’s always a better life that only you can make. Carry on. You have my vote. No one will ever replace your past. But someone will make your future.

Rebecca, I'm so happy for you, and that you will be continuing your adventures. Michael seems like a great guy, and like someone you can trust to keep you safe. I will say that many of the locations you filmed at in this video brought back lots of good memories. I immediately recognized the pedestrian tunnel under the railroad at the Brass Bell in Kalk Bay - I spent way too much time (or was it not enough?) and money with friend at the Brass Bell ;-). Hello Rebecca I am glad to see you are moving forward again. You have asked for comments regarding your relationship many will be in the positive and a few of course will be in the negative. The asking for comments though is the silly thing no one here in the comments knows the situation between the two of you anywhere even close to what you both do, so If I were you I would ignore them even if they are positive. Having said that I do have a suggestion in that until you are both sure of things then you both do nothing precipitous that cannot be rolled back that it is not circumstances driving this relationship and that especially you are well not over Patrick but that the You that you are now is your new normal. Having said that I do hope that things go well and that he is certainly a lucky bloke.

Rebecca, I’m so happy you’ve found a partner for at least a start of a new - continuing life cruising. Finding a really great cruising mate is probably even harder than finding “just” a life partner. I think your method of knowing the person to cruise with was fine. Need to take the time and experience in different situations with eyes wide open. Michael looks and sounds like a fine fine person - fingers crossed all is going and will be going well. Agree with you it makes absolutely no sense to solo cruise and you’ve made the right life strategy decision.The trade winds should probably take you west soon, as they took us with our beloved s/v GDY-Kids, a year ago from St Lucia and eventually back to the US - now in Savannah until May 2021 when we plan to go north - via Newport, RI Home! to Boston - not too far from the beginning of your cruising adventure. I was truly worried about your vulnerability finding and then sailing with a new co-captain. Yes.you are probably right. But you would be pretty amazed at how hard it is to find someone TRULY ready to go...same lifestyle and habits, same desires for destinations and cruising style, and ability to live together in a small space and be happy doing it. Not as easy as you would think. I feel I got pretty darn lucky!!!

Wow! You must have something amazing. The guys I like aren’t into me, and the guys who come for me are not the guys I like. I would just like this to come together for once: 57 and never married. I’ve made plenty of lemonade and love life , as well as my boat which I live on. There are plenty of men ready to take advantage of me, but no single good ones. I am independent. But, I can also really love. It’s a little embarrassing saying this publicly. It’s just that I recently met a really cool guy, and we were fast friends, but he is not into me. Just one. I am sorry to hear about Patrick... It saddens me to hear of his passing... He was a wonderful wealth of knowledge for those of us who are planning our own life/retirement afloat. I hope you can find continued happiness, and perhaps companionship in his absence until the two of you meet again in whatever afterlife you believe in. I hope you and Michael find good companionship and happy sailing. Best of luck to you. As for your criteria. I think you set about to choose wisely. Happy for you Rebecca! But just in the interest of being prepared for voyage (& you probably have already contemplated this) I would like to offer some suggestions. Grieving doesn't end after the first wave. It is a process much like the ocean and comes in waves. It can be an undercurrent or a tidal wave, or regular intervals or even crisscrossing other waves. It is probable that you are a sturdy and practical person given your lifestyle, but that does not give you immunity to the waves & currents. They are normal and natural and contain a healing aspect. That said, bodies and brains can get overwhelmed or stuck biochemically in an eddy and there are helpful tools available both in natural and alopathic healthcare styles. Have on board those things which you would be comfortable using in a crisis. Spiritual connections are also important. I, being Christian, would recommend exercising faith in a loving God. p.p.s. Just need to add that you and Michael need to have a plan of approach to dealing with any of these waves under any specific conditions. You know how you normally express, so sketch out for him how you respond under what conditions so in fairness, he won't be swept away by any "tidal waves." You get my drift. He should share with you the same. It may be a bit of an awkward exercise, but isn't that every safety drill?

AS you may remember, I talked about my First Mate/Admiral dying in a terrible fall from the deck while on the hard. Life does go on. A few years after the fall it finally took her life. Yes, we talked about it. And I have a new “mate “ wife. And we are having many new adventures. Sounds like you are right on track. Just like your have been doing sounds right to me!!!
