Living on a Self-Sufficient Sailboat for 10 Years + FULL TOUR

Brian and Karin Trautman have been living on a sailboat for 10 years, and their boat is set up so they can be off the grid in remote places for months at a time with solar and wind power providing electricity, a water maker that turns salt water into fresh water, multiple freezers and loads of storage space for food, and even a small washing machine on board!
They've sailed SV Delos - a 53' sloop rig ketch - 83,000 nautical miles which is the equivalent of circling the earth at the equator more than 3 times. Their latest adventures include sailing as a family with their 6-month baby, Sierra, and outfitting the boat with a heater so they can explore the Arctic this summer after several years in the Tropics.
If you want to follow SV Delos, and support their amazing vlog-style documentary project about the liveaboard lifestyle, we've included links to all their pages here:

Hi Brian & Karin, I'm from Alaska and can vouch for the Inside Passage as being one the most beautiful places on Earth with sheltered waters and plentiful anchorage. Many comments on the "luxury" of being able to afford a live aboard sailboat. Please consider that Brian is an engineer that started a tech company. He wasn't poor. He sold everything he owned and bought a used sailboat 10 years ago. That is a large, very high quality boat, but 10 years ago it was much less expensive than what it would cost today. Also, he does nearly all maintenance and repairs himself (he did find another sailor with refrigeration experience to rebuild his freezers). Over the past decade he has rebuilt and upgraded nearly every system on the boat. He spends days in cramped spaces doing precision maintenance on equipment most of us never even have to think about. There are costs and trade-offs to choosing this lifestyle.

@operator0
@operator0 2 года назад
@@babydriverx This boat cost about $250,000 on the used market today. It probably cost $350,000 ten years ago when he bought it. He's probably spent another $100,000+ in the last ten years on maintenance. As you saw in the video, they budget about $2500 per month for the three of them to live, including boat maintenance. When they first started out, he was living off savings with the expectation that once he got to New Zealand he would sell the boat and go back to work. That didn't happen. For the first four years he and the rest of the crew would stop sailing periodically and do odd jobs to replenish their savings so that they could go sailing again. Once the RU-vid channel started taking off they could make enough money to just sail. Now they have enough Patreon subscribers to make them at least $50,000 per month. So it was a long haul, and lots of hard work went into building the channel, but it paid off, and now they are the second most popular sailing VLOGer on youtube.

I think a little bit of that freedom went away when they started carrying a camera everywhere and they have obviously spent a fortune making that boat as much like living on land as they could

Agree! They went through literally everything I was curious about plus a ton of things I didn’t even think about but is extremely important. He took a lot of time researching, learning and teaching himself before starting the journey which is most important.

@@emilywiebel3238 Yes, I think sailing is one of those things that you can't wing it with, and pick it up along the way. Although I have seen vlogs by people who say they'd never sailed before and they bought a boat and went for it. The people that seem to be getting a lot out of it as a lifestyle are all-round pretty competent people (esp mechanics for the engine), very practical and are invariably optimists.
@prepperjonpnw6482
@prepperjonpnw6482 2 года назад
@@johnmainwaring6556 optimism seems to be mandatory for anyone who wants to live on a sailboat and travel. The kind of people that don’t get upset when something breaks but see it as part of the adventures and an opportunity to learn something. Having a good mechanical ability helps a lot, when they may not know how to fix something but can figure it out. Cheers

Assuming that Elon Musk’s system comes online for satellite internet that particular component should become so much cheaper and somewhat easier to do.

That’s because solid women tend to hold out for solid men (i.e., loyal, honest, kind, hardworking, smart, respectful) - which is a unicorn of a man and applies to only a handful of women. Good luck to you. Be what it is that you seek and whoever you’re looking for will be looking for you too. ❤️

Love the video. 30 years ago my wife and I sailed our 33 foot sloop from U.S. to South America and back on a 3+ year voyage. It was amazing. Like you, we were not professional sailors and had to learn a great deal about sailing and maintaining a boat. We were 25 years old at the time and I am now 60. I spent a full year (part time) just outfitting the boat for the trip. Many great experiences learning new things, sailing, diving, fishing, meeting people and looking back on it even the harrowing experiences were great.
