L880K, ball bearing turbo and all. A fine choice!! Don’t try to adjust the roof.. ever. 😅 If it squeaks and rattles, lots of silicon lube on the seals and maybe a spacer to tighten the clamps.
I'm freaking out about a wayward mechanic farkin up the roof mechanism, whenever I need to take it for anything I'm 'Here's how the roof works, if you break it you're paying for it!" aha 😂
Not my experience?? When I first got my Copen the roof rattled heaps, quick adjustment later and its been fine coming up 3 years now, adjusting the roof was super simple
Im more of a Cappuccino or Beat/S660 guy, or of course the AZ-1. The Copen being FWD is a bit of a bummer for those little things but i do like the design! They had a 1.3L in some countries. (Edit: you mentioned it haha)
I used to drive past a Copen when taking a little friend to her grandparents house. She called my MR2 “the little car” and found the Copen hilarious as it was smaller.
At least in Japan the Copen got an engine that Daihatsu developed for spec rally racing in some domestic entry level class, which is why it's surprisingly sturdy and capable. There's a time attack class just for Copens running Tsukuba and other tracks. I'm not totally sure if it's the same the guys got in their's now, as international markets often get other engines.
The best convertible jdm ever made… I’ll just be sitting here waiting in my SIR Del Sol… 170 ish bhp B16A goodness. Electric roof ✅ Double wishbone suspension ✅
I would love to see you put together this engine with a cam upgrade, a pcb way sponsor for a variable vale duration system for it with a super turbo setup, gotta port & polish those heads! maybe get a better head for better flow rates :) maybe even those equal length tube headers, ooohhh it would be soo cool. But also, I'm aware that gti he was talking about has some rear wheel drive, right? Is it possible to cut, weld, and maybe stick a adapter plate to a drive shaft to a rear wheel drive, mostly, set up off of the front wheel drive? seems like it could be super fun, would need to strengthen it a bit but it might be possible with the exhaust in that area being able to allow for a drive shaft snuck into there. of course a bigger radiator and intercooler setup is needed, but if you have a super turbo you could swap where the exhaust comes out, into the rear, to help free up space for that area to take one. Personally, I think a big block is going to really upset that balance to such a degree the handling will be such a huge change. If you can only slightly increase the weight and bump up power through forced induction and some upgrades to help with the airflow and performance of the engine it would be much better overall. I know honda just came out with a vvd system, so you might be able to copy that with some basic lift and valve springs to help with taking off that limiter on that rpm? but I think there was another 4 cylinder that came out with a vvd system a while ago that is a part of the engine and its 660cc too. I just can't remember if I saw that right, or got it confused with something else. Weight distribution with a nice set of upgrades with cams, valves, and a good turbo set up for a great dyno tuning will always help these things, whats amazing is that they have some serious tech on them from motorcycles and maybe you'll be able to use those to your advantage, if all the bolts and so on line up :p Love the magnetic parts tray! its great :)
Cute vehicle. Funny though, my Kawasaki Vulcan has a 650cc engine. So you basically have a small car powered by a motorcycle engine. 😂 FYI, just bought a mag tray. I've needed one for years. I have been using the bottom of a plastic milk jug for years, looked like a good reason for an upgrade.
@18:03 It is 20kg heavier with the 1.3, that doesn't sound like an LS swap, does it? That would be like Marty on an American diet. 🤭 The 0.7l turbo Kei version may feel faster even though it is slower. 🙂
Nothing front wheel drive can be the "best" at anything apart from understeer and torquesteer... (Less of the latter in this case). 🤣 Bloody love a Copen though, great episode!!!
They took a hiatus from that for a while and that is the essence of this channel. Best MCM videos are from the era when they filmed in Marty's mom's garage. That time was epic.
We need a “Mighty Car Mods Nugget Nationals” brought to you by SuperCheap race series. 2-8 hour endurance races with a rule set modeled after the endurance race they just did with some changes as needed.
@@mj_aussie_coaster_travels8310 Personally I find Tavarish hard to follow/watch, nothing against him, his content just isn't my style/for me. Is it cool? Do I respect the dude for taking on insanely difficult projects and seeing them through more often than not? You bet your butt. I have mad respect for the guy, and he does cool stuff. I just prefer watch other stuff. Hes a cool dude though.
I thought moog bought one for martin years back and martin hated it and immediately got rid of it, it was during the blue turd era if i remember correctly
@@ArgonBlargh I really wanted an mgb or a spitfire before I bought my miata. I just couldn't find one in well enough condition to daily sadly, they're definitely cool cars.
@@jwlmsthese days there's always a pocket of "nerds" in a good way, that make harnesses for stuff like this and take on stuff like that, it's awesome. I bet someone makes em, but probably to order and finding them would be the hard part. But I bet it exists for these if they're racing em that much
Yeah! I always liked the small teddybear ☺️ But whats about the cappuccino?! Ist more like a mx5 with RWD and it looks a bit better imho. I had one for 2years and it was awesome! I even took it on a roadtrip to sardegna back in 2021 🥳 i loved it
Toyota did an extremely limited run of a GR Sport version of the Copen, only released in Japan, unfortunately. That just shows how amazing this little nugget is!
As a miata owner, how dare you!! Jokes aside this thing is awesome, I had no idea it even existed, I love seeing what you guys do with kei cars especially since they're so foriegn to me living here in canada
Props to you guys. Yes you have grown the show and have some amazing accomplishments, but the thing I have to give the most props to is you have kept the show grassroots. You still work on the ground with a jack and stand (like majority of car moder’s) well done Marty & Moog keep it going we need a car show that speaks to the people. The Chad.
Every single time yall post an episode like this, I'm like man I don't know if I'm gonna be interested in that. But I click it anyway, because MCM FTW. And EVERY SINGLE TIME it's always SO interesting, even if I don't care a single bit about the source(like Kei cars). Legitimately, how do you do this? You can't chalk it all up to natural presence or personalities...you legitimately make me feel your passion for this stuff, and it makes me think about my project cars. Props, lads.
I've just picked up a N One RS Manual. Daily is Zook Alto RS Turbo. Also have a 595 Scorpionio with about 300HP and a 500HP GR Yaris. The Kei Cars are the most fun and dollar for dollar the best things to drive.
ive been using those sized magnetic parts trays for small engine repairs for decades. they are so handy for not losing small bolts and screws while working on brush cutters chainsaws mowers gerators etc a bigger tray would be perfect for car stuff since they are larger and more to take apart and re-install.
Wow! Marty’s explanation on the track about the Copen was so professional and concise. Get him on mainstream television. A guy that can have fun, be informative and relate to the audience! We need more of that! What a legend!
My FAVOURITE Blue colour on a car is the 'Audi Ara Blue Chrystal'... Goddamn it's a BEAUTIFUL colour, and then... In the sunlight, it glistens too! 👌 😎🇬🇧
As RU-vid channel 'CarWow' did with their Kei car drag race test.. The Autozam AZ1 BEAT this car!!!... With Mid mounted engine... Gullwing doors too! 😏😉😛🤣🤣 😎🇬🇧
11:56 that would be a Toyota MRS, sir. Another car you should take a look at. I know you have some reservations about working on MR2’s after your SW20, but ZZW30 is easier to work on and (IMO) a better driving experience. Copens are cool tho! I only wish they were RWD.
JDM nuggets over crashed supercars that still have 50Ks worth of work done on them. Thanks for keeping it real for the everyman and not just the rich kids!
I believe there is a version of the K3-VE engine that is already turbo from the factory, the K3-VET from Daihatsu YRV turbo.. pu that in a Copen.. it would be fast..
