Congrats! Hope you have a great time working at the lab! As I'm starting to learn QFT now, I'd be happy to see any QFT videos you put out... but at the same time QFT seems like one of the largest "sub-areas" from physics I've ever seen, where you need to know lots of prerequisites from all over the place before you can even start. So it's definitely a big undertaking.
@AndrewDotsonvideos
@AndrewDotsonvideos Год назад
That’s awesome that you’re starting QFT, I feel like non-abelian gauge theories will come much more natural for you with your GR background than for most people who first encounter it. Same math, different group. Christoffel symbols -> gauge fields, parallel propagator -> Wilson lines, curvature tensor -> field strength tensor etc. it be interesting to talk with you about other parallels you notice along the way
@eigenchris
@eigenchris Год назад
@@AndrewDotsonvideos Yeah, I've noticed some of those parallels already. It seems in GR, you study curvature on "Riemannian manifolds", but in QFT you study curvature in "Principle Fiber Bundles". Unfortunately I haven't been able to find a good intro to fiber bundles that isn't just a mess of symbols and definitions, but it looks like most QFT texts don't bother talking about them anyway. I guess it's something only the pure mathematical physicists worry about.
@lukasschmitz9030
@lukasschmitz9030 Год назад
@eigenchris you might want to try Mark J. D. Hamilton's book "Mathematical Gauge Theory". It is perfect for self study or studying in small groups. Also, gravity/GR can also be thought of as a gauge theory on a fibre bundle. More specifically it is a gauge theory formulated on a manifold's affine frame bundle or even its affine spin bundle. These are bundles that are as closely tied to the manifold's structure as its tangent bundle is.

Congratulations Andrew! looking forward to the QFT series though i know full well i won't understand a thing at least until I finish math methods 3 in my year 4. But here I am struggling with partial derivatives in MM 1 😂. Anyways, thanks for inspiring me to be confident in my decision to go into physics, looking at how much you are enjoying your works keeps me going as well.

Going gray at 27? I went gray at 22 from Physics. Always great to see a new upload and to see how far you've come since I've been watching you since I was in undergrad and from your first video.

I actually thought of Jens when you went for the anime 😂. Congratulations on pulling off thoughtfully asking questions at a conference. Not always easy to pull off.

Man time flies I started watching you when we were both in undergrad. I ended up not getting a phD like I planned but kept learning Python/DataScience glad you stuck with it.

I’m getting into theoretical cosmology now and in group meetings! I was an observational astrophysicist, but always wanted to try theoretical.

Yo Andrew, I've been a long time viewer, since your undergrad days. I was in high school back then, and am a Master's student in Experimental Nuclear Physics now, for which I moved to Europe from my home country India. All I wanted to say is, good luck with everything man. I'm following right behind you(though I'm an experimental guy😂), and who knows, maybe we might work together someday!

I'm an engineer by trade, but my first love has always been physics. I have been using your videos for motivation to stay with it in my physics major. The way you talk about it makes me excited to learn!

I actually understood the bulk of what you were taking about. I spent 15 years (10 in the Navy and 5 at a civilian plant) operating nuclear reactors and nuclear plants. I'm certainly no pro at QCD and QFT, but have read a ton of books and textbooks and watched buttloads of videos about both subjects. But when it comes to nuclear reactions and particle physics, I'm enthralled. By the way, are those Bessel functions in the total cross section equation? I hope you find the time to do a QFT series!

Wow that's awesome! And if you're talking around the 11:08 mark, the J's are actually "Jet Functions". They describe the perturbative evolution of the struck quark into the jet. Bessel functions still show up in QFT calculations though. Mostly because you can do a fourier transform from momentum to position space, and the e^{i k dot x) is a 4-dimensional dot product, so there's angular dependence. You can do a partial wave expansion, reducing the 3-dimensional part of the fourier transform into an integral of a legendre polynomial (the angular integral) and a bessel function (the radial integral). Bastards can actually be pretty challenging to integrate numerically due to the oscillations of the bessel function.
