In this episode of the guitar building series I try to explain how I make a guitar body with an inlayed quilted maple top.
I show you all the steps I do and tell you as much as I know about the techniques and tools I use.
And I've included a section on router table safety.

What methods do you use to route large cavities in your projects? I'm very curious about some of the methods you use on your projects.
@HrafnMusic
@HrafnMusic 4 года назад
Forstner bit to clear the waste first, stopping about 1-2mm before the desired depth. Then route with a template and flush cut bit, plunge routing the final couple of mm. I have inner and outer cavity templates rather than copy rings, but that's a cool solution.

I have to say I really, really appreciate this video series as it has helped me tremedously in preparing my first build. One comment or maybe even video idea: could you please mention the grit when you are using sandpaper, or even make a "what sandpaper to use when" video? It would be really helpful as I am lost in a sea of 120 to 3000 grit paper to prepare for gluing, prepare for a danish oil finish, polisht he fret ends... Cheers from a neighbouring country!

Yes it is. If you can’t do a proper test fit you’re never sure if it actually fits. And if it doesn’t fit you only know when it’s to late.

I’d be interested in a video showing how you made the templates to route the top cavity. Great video! Looks beautiful!

yeah no joke. His templates are incredible. I's watch a whole tutorial on just how to make a good temeplate.

Hi Michael, Thank you. I have to think about that one. When I need to replace my current template or need a new one I will definitely make a tutorial. It's pretty time consuming to make one for a tutorial only.

Hi Kyle, Thank you. I don't know if you've seen it yet, but I do have a template making video up on my channel. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ZGxnYFmq4qo.html This video might have some useful information for you.

@@UnquendorGuitars no i hadn't looked yet. I was definitely going to check out the rest of your channel after i finished the build series. I mostly wanted to comment to show appreciation for the precision of your templates. Your videos deserve SO much more attention. At least from a woodworker's perspective.

I've started watching this build yesterday and can't turn it off. I appreciate the level of detail you put into your work and your videos. I'll soon be starting my first guitar build however it is an acoustic but I am picking up many tips from your videos. Keep them coming and I'll keep watching.

Hey man! I’m loving your videos! I’m in the process of building my first and your videos are becoming super helpful. I have a suggestion for the inlay top, which is amazing by the way! Since you are doing a set neck, maybe if you drill a small hole where the neck cavity would be, it would allow air to escape when you’re pushing in your inlay and allow it to slide in easier? Just a thought.
@UnquendorGuitars
@UnquendorGuitars 3 года назад
Hi Brad, Thank you very much and I'm glad you're getting some useful information from my videos. And thank you for the tip. I will try it next time I'm doing an inlayed top. Although there already is a big hole in the body for the control cavity for the air to escape from. At least it will help me to see if the inlay is all the way in. The main reason why it is so hard to get the top in is because of the very tight fit and the fact the body wood expands ever so slightly due to the moisture in the glue and sometimes the amount of glue.
@enjoybrad81
@enjoybrad81 3 года назад
@@UnquendorGuitars Ah okay. I didn't even think about that. I feel dumb now. And yeah, I didn't think about the fact of glue swelling up the wood until yesterday when I was listening to a podcast talking about mortise and tenons being tight. Makes sense. Anyways, thank you for the response! By the way, I love your guitars!

i see you are using the 30mm tall bit , do you know there is the CMT 50mm with 12mm collet? or do you think the 50mm tall bit is too much for that 1400w router? is just because I think with the tall 50mm bit is possible to do it with out flipping the body up side down
@UnquendorGuitars
@UnquendorGuitars 3 года назад
Hi Cris, I use both the 60mm with a cutting length (CL) of 31.7 and the 57mm with a CL of 20mm both with a diameter of 16mm and a 8mm shaft, mostly because I don't have a 12mm or 1/2" inch (12,7mm) collet. And as far as I know there is no CMT bearing guided router bit with the bearing at the bottom with a 50mm CL. The ones I found at my supplier with a shaft of 12mm or 1/2" all have a max. 38,1mm CL. Also the longer the CL of the bit the higher the chance of tear out. If you take shallow passes and don't try to remove a lot of material a 1400W router should be sufficient enough for a Router bit with a 50mm CL. I only flip the body if I need to keep the template on. Something I need to make a habit of is to first route the control cavity and then the outside of the body. That way I can remove the added thickness of the template after the first pass and don't have to flip the body and switch router bit.

You merged two different types of Wood real right. The top and the body. Are they going to react the same way to moist and temperatuur in time? Meaning, is there a chance on cracks?
@UnquendorGuitars
@UnquendorGuitars 4 года назад
The chance of cracking is minimal when wood has been properly dried. I’m not a wood expert but I think that unlike most material types different species of wood have a similar expansion rate.
