the problem is that we're talking the equivalent of shooting down something like A-10 warthogs or whatever. hardly the kind of modern aircraft worth talking about. russia is losing an old airframe like this, but meanwhile, each year they're building like a dozen each of two or three other types of modern airframes. more modern by russian standards at least, considering how those fourth and a half generation semi-stealth SU-57s are barely starting to get built now twenty years after the united states started introducing proper fifth generation F-22s with the radar cross section of a mosquito into active service. getting started when the united states is already working on sixth generation aircraft and talking about retiring F-22s in the 2030s. the part that matters though is that ukraine doesn't have anything that can match even those mediocre russian aircraft like the SU-30s and SU-35s, and they never will since they're gonna need years just to get a few squadrons of really old second hand F-16s from little countries like belgium and the netherlands that had to pull back their limited number of those from the air campaign against the islamic state in syria and iraq due to concerns about the airframes going past their expected service life.. and that was a decade ago, so imagine what state they must be in today.. bunch of insanely high-maintenance airframes that would require ground crews to pull off miracles to keep them going even if this was in the united states with a budget of nearly a trillion dollars per year and the best and brightest people on the planet with half a century of organizational experience and the best infrastructure and with a giant aircraft boneyard in arizona to pull parts from and with lockheed being a domestic company available right around the corner when more specialized expertise is needed and most importantly during peacetime without the aircraft and crews having to dodge cruise missiles on a weekly basis. and now imagine those being maintained by dudes that have no idea what they are doing because they only got a few months or like a year of training at best. with pilots with no experience and like a fifth of the typical training time going into the most dangerous airspace that anyone has ever been into and going up against AWACS that can detect them from hundreds of miles away and a modern integrated air defense network with air defense batteries that can take them down from over a hundred miles away and russian aircraft that regardless of how modern they might be will still outperform and outrange them in terms of their radar and air-to-air missiles. heck, it's taking so long that russia is having the time to ramp up production of those SU-57s like i mentioned and start introducing S-500 batteries here and there and slowly start working on developing a replacement A-100 for their A-50 early warning aircraft that were becoming a critically endangered species. so god knows what those F-16s are going to look like when they actually get into ukraine.. starting with half a dozen airframes by the end of this year.. that means literally a single two ship formation that is capable of going out on a given day after you account for the kind of terrible below 50% combat readiness that those types of soviet air forces get in those parts of the world. what the heck is ukraine going to do with two aircraft? launch a giant massive game-changing strike of like four cruise missiles at once? maybe intercept like two or three incoming cruise missiles or drones? ain't gonna be very game-changing, that i can tell you right now. and even when they get those 40 pilots ready to go to have a full squadron of 20 aircraft by the end of next year and start operating them sometime in 2026, it's gonna be a similar issue. assuming 50% combat readiness at best, that's gonna be just a handful of aircraft. best case scenario like a dozen if they really prepare for a specific mission and get as many of them ready as possible. might do some damage with 24 cruise missiles, but again, hardly the kind of game-changing thing that was initially talked about last year when they announced these and said that F-16s were gonna be flying in ukraine within four months by the end of september and arrive in time for game-changing impacts on the tail end of the long-awaited spring summer autumn ukrainian super-offensive. and they're gonna be going up against at least dozens of semi-modern russian aircraft. the russians have about 300 airframes that are more modern and worth talking about. applying the same crappy soviet 50% combat readiness, that's 150 airframes. and assuming that some of them are gonna be based in the chinese section of russia in the far east or in the west near the border with the baltics or in the northern arctic regions, you're still left with probably at least half of the remaining ones that are allocated to the special military adventure and that can go out on any given day. so a dozen F-16s going up against up to a hundred russian airframes that regardless of how crappy they might be compared to properly-maintained and upgraded F-15s and F-16s or whatever are still going to easily outperform these ancient second hand airframes from the little netherlands or whatever. and again, we're talking two years from now. and that's best case scenario with zero further delays and everything going perfectly and russia just sitting there and not touching the airfield where these are going to operate from, which obviously isn't going to happen. so realistically it's probably going to be late 2026 or early 2027. based on how things are going right now, ukraine has time to collapse a hundred times before that first squadron finally gets there and starts operating in ukraine. but hey, i guess the ukraine flag profile picture slava ukraine heroic slava vroom vroom doggy sniffing brigade commandos from the 12345th armored youtube division can proudly celebrate the fact that ukrainians managed to take down some ancient vodka-engineered orcish flying machine that had been operating right over the front line with impunity and dropping bombs on their heads for god knows how long before they finally got a hold of some stingers to take down one of them. massive strategic victory. get me supreme general hodges on the line right away! we're back in business, boys! dumb incompetent russians are running out of missiles and tanks and shovels and washing machines, crimea victory beach party soon, moscow about to fall, russian collapse imminent! 🤣
