The learning process is a curious thing to watch in others. I hope that through watching your process I can bring more into the classroom. Thank you.

If you want to learn to code, I think your first step is going to be to define what that actually means to you. there are so many different types of coding. Do you want to make a website? Do you want to build a WiFi cat feeder that uses machine learning to make sure that your cat never gains weight? These are both months long projects if you're starting from scratch

Suggestion: As an educator, I had to learn VARK (visual, auditory, reading/writing, &kinesthetoc) The idea is that different students have different learning styles, so a lesson plan should make use of all four modalities. However, in my experience students more often seem to use different combinations of modality for different subjects. (also I think there are Way more than just those 4) I would like you to consider that in your learning, try to find as many different WAYS of learning the subject as you can .. [i.ei Learning music might include: Hearing and mimic sounds, learning to read musical notation, using an oscilloscope, or watching a layer of sand on a speaker, feeling vibrations, dancing, learning an instrument, reading about the history, using mathematical analysis, or many many more) My suggestion would be that you combine at least 2 or three learning styles for each subject and try not to reuse the same combinations. my short list of suggestions for learning styles you could choose from would be Visual-spatial auditory - aural verbal-linguistic physical - kinesthetic social or solitary (inter/intra personal) and Mathmatical - logical analysis (scientific) it would be really great to see someone actually DELIBERATLY experiencing the different WAYS we learn and the different ways that a modality might work for someonein one subject and not work for them in a different subject. consider how useful this might be for your viewers who will have different ways of learning, how discouraged they might become trying to learn in a modality that worked for you, and not realizing that it even makes a difference, also when are trying to learn something in a modality thhta is not working and yoru viewers can see how much more you struggle with a subject not because it is more difficult geereally but because of the modality you are learnig in . This could make even your failures a great benefit, especially if you then go back useing a different modality and are able to succeed much easier.

On the subject of learning to code in thirty days: it is absolutely possible. The coding itself is really pretty easy nowadays, so long as you pick a beginner-friendly language (my advice would be to go with python). The rest of the field of computer science is mostly just on how to solve problems that come up using algorithms and data structures, etc. For a first personal project, it doesn't really matter that your program isn't optimally performant or even that the code is maintainable. Good luck!

In the beginning of this presentation you mentioned "...weird stuff with your camera..." And throughout the video, the auto-focus was...shall we say...very active. (I assume it is a Sony Alpha DSLR?) Then I thought... *_Brilliant!!_* The "new thing" will be the study of the effects of Subliminal stimuli! Subliminal messages, or auditory and visual signals below the absolute threshold level (ATL) of our conscious awareness. The word “subliminal” literally means “below threshold.” For some reason now, I want to go out and purchase a 2-Pocket Portfolio with "prongs". And I have no clue what a prong even is. *_Brilliant!!_* 🤑

"Not adding Misinformation to the world" is 100% my greatest fear with creating any kind of content. I've kind of gotten used to accepting like a 90% accuracy as long as the inaccuracies are not in any way significant enough to cause potential harm - in which case I just don't include it. I've also tried self-learning various subjects including - coding (in R), Swedish (rosetta stone and duo lingo), Data Science and Statistics (statistics by jim), marketing (I wrote kids books for a while), knitting (lost power for two weeks in high school so I taught myself with chop sticks), video editing (youtube), science communication (also fueled by my obsession with Alan Alda), asian cooking (zero frame of reference = less cognitive bias as to what SHOULD be), piano (used to play, have since forgotten).

This is a brilliant f’ing idea. I love it. I also love the autofocus going off all during the video when you were referencing your technical videography skills. Ha! lol. Weirdly one of the classes I took in college (actually in graduate program was ‘quantitative analysis and computer science’. The quantitative analysis was way beyond me. But I coded in Fortran (I mean literally wrote simple programs, punched each line on literal punch cards, handed them in at the ‘computer’ and picked the results up the next day. Day after day. It helped me appreciate software so much. Bought the first spreadsheet (Lotus 123) and it changed a LOT for me. Learning to code as an example of learning. I love it. Doesn’t matter how many views you get this month. The quality of the viewers will be a 10x factor.

As a computer science teacher who teaches elementary school students how to code, you will fail more than you succeed, and that is not only OK, it is part of the process. Failure is not the opposite of success, it is just a step along the way to the solution of your problem.

Maybe instead of a novel just shoot for a short story, 30-45 pages max. I think that’s a lot more reasonable in a month both time-wise and quality-wise. Plus there seems to be more easy to access resources for how to write a ‘good’ short story than that of a novel. And if you’re going for just progress instead of success, a short story is easier to see the inherent flaws in and forces the writer to really stick to the fundamentals as the ‘short’ constraint doesn’t leave the writer enough room to bog themselves down in a long, convoluted story so they have to be more particular and concise about word and phrase choice. There’s a reason that in college they only have you write short stories for the first year or two before tackling bigger potatoes. As always, great video idea! Can’t wait to see where it goes

Best way to learn coding, and anything else for that matter, is to code a game. Game development is the most multidisciplinary thing ever, because it requires a bit of knowledge in everything. Pick a moderately complex game project from scratch and finish it. :) After all, learning involves playing, and we've been developing games literally our whole childhood. Just not in a formal language... :)

i think if you are going to do experiments, i think it would be advantages to see the different speeds of learning through the different parts of memory, Semantic, Episodic, Procedural and Classical Conditioned. Semantic and Procedural memories are relatively straightforward to understand, but if you experimented with learning speeds with all 4 it could be interesting.

I've made up two kinds of learning in my mind. The first being the cramming kind, where you can use spaced repetition, mapping in your mind or other techniques to quickly memorise the shallow part of something. And the second being when you spend so long immersed in something (getting familiar with it, sometimes getting deeply technical, training your intuition in ways that would be hard to spell out in words) that you can navigate it effortlessly. Since you're doing CompSci try not to Dunning-Kruger yourself, it's notorious for that.

Excellent idea! Good luck with the process! I have found that I have spent most of my life learning (graphic design, 3d modeling, sculpting, unwrapping, texturing, rigging, animation, Unity, (and soon to be unreal) programming, VR...) but I haven't spent nearly enough time refining any one of them. So as much as learning is important, practicing it to a practical state is also important I think...so once you find something you really like, practice that until you can create something really solid with it. A RU-vidr I follow that did a similar sort of thread was Wheezy Waiter, he does a lot of 'I worked out for 30 days and this is what happened...with a LOT of different topics...mostly self improvement, but I'd say that is another form of learning too. Could be an interesting format as reference perhaps if you haven't heard of him. Thanks for reading my Ted Talk! :)

This seems like a really interesting idea! As a university teacher, many courses I hold are not that much longer than a month, although often spread out a bit more as it is taught at 50% speed. I believe its possible to teach yourself the concepts of many tasks in a month, but that pause for reflection and for doing the practical work is not really there. Maybe consider going back to the subject again later, and see how you evolved naturally after you taught yourself the basics? Something like one month later and half a year later, and thereby getting one more video out of it :-)

Have fun! Coding happily has an abundance of free software and free learning tools. Project-based learning is always the way to go in my opinion. Personally coding is most interesting to me where it meets meatspace, e.g. Arduino projects. But that could be an unwelcome layer of complication if you've never fiddled with electronic bits. Coding spans such a huge space from web design to firmware to machine learning and on and on, so Step 0 is definitely deciding what area you want to venture into.

Cool idea. I envy both your ambition and enthusiasm. Given your thoughtfulness I'm sure your analysis will be insightful regardless of the task and outcome. I realize you specifically mentioned choosing tasks that any audience member could also try. But, as a follow up, it could be interesting to try a physical skill (like fencing or rock climbing) after your experiment with computer science to compare and contrast the experience of a purely intellectual pursuit and one where "muscle memory" and coordination are involved. I assume you've already settled on a method for your CS adventure at this point. But I can never recommend Harvard's CS50 course through edX enough. Excellent foundation content for CS & can be tackled at your own pace. So should be well suited to your compressed schedule. P.S. worry less about your camera, the exposure was fine … or at least more than good enough for the task at hand. You might want to disable the auto-focus though and set the focus manually as having the focus hunt around as you moved actually was slightly distracting (though still not important).

@@TravisGilbert YW. Some more info: this is how developers collaborate nowadays. You put up some code, it's available to anyone for download, and anyone with a free account can also fork it and send pull requests. It also uses git, a version control system, so that you don't only store the latest version of your code, but also all the steps in between. Every time you commit, your current snapshot will be pushed, and all snapshots are available so people can see what changed in each iteration. More advanced topics are things like figuring out where a bug was introduced (having the history and a known working version from the past helps), working in isolated branches so that you don't break the "known working" version on the main branch, etc... but that's probably a bit out of scope for the purpose of learning how to code. The only things you'll need to concern yourself with is committing your code and pushing your commits to github. In fact, there's no reason this could only be used for code. Anything purely text-based works well with git. With binary stuff, you run into the problem that the "diff", the "what has changed in this commit" in other words, isn't very useful. So probably not a very good option for a novel if it's in e.g. .doc or something similar, but if you use something like Markdown, TeX, HTML, ... and you want to keep track of the document's history, any version control system works great for that.

If you have a decent grasp on logic (which you do), learning to code is really not that big a deal. 30 days is totally reasonable. Don't expect to be an expert at the end of it, but you should be able to get a good grasp on the basic principles (flow control, types, I/O, and so on), express your ideas in a single language and learn to use its associated toolset (assuming you pick something reasonable, like Python or Ruby), and finish a small demo project, in that time.
