In what might be the most profound video I’ve ever filmed, a truly newborn Gray Whale falls off its Mom’s back as it struggles to learn to swim. Today on the sunset trip aboard @gonewhalewatching we noticed a disturbance next to a large Gray Whale that looked similar to a Sea Lion darting around the whale’s head. As we got closer, I realized what we were looking at...a truly newborn baby Gray Whale’s tail was thrashing awkwardly on the surface, almost as if it was trying to figure out how to use such a limb. Numerous times this young whale was lifted up by its mother to help it breathe, in one of the most touching things I’ve ever seen. There is a chance that this whale was mere hours old, as I’ve never seen such a small calf, nor have I ever seen one that seemingly didn’t know how to use its tail to swim
