I have this mattress my son has been sleeping on it great since he was about 3 months old. He is about to be 6 months and just started sleeping on his stomach and putting his face on the mattress. I love this mattress !
Should I be concerned about the polyester cover? I've researched so many crib mattresses and its all so overwhelming. I like the Essentia, Avocado and Newton. I really like the Newton but the polyester is by definition comprised of chemicals, shouldn't that be a concern?
I think it is worth it, my friends nephew passed away last year at the age of 5 months (poor baby 😭) it was really devastating for everyone, the reason for the child death was due to suffocation as he had just started rolling and rolled on his face while taking a nap and his mother was not near him when it happened, she had baby cam that she thought was a good quality and would inform her of the rolling but unfortunately it didn’t, so buying a breathable matters and also breathable sheets and covers would be great for child safety.
No mention of the firmness, which is just as important as breathability? Also, how breathable is it once it has a mattress cover and sheet on it? Do you have to buy the Newton brand sheets and covers to ensure it’s breathability?
I would just use the mattress and no sheet. The sheets are only for style purposes. I wouldn’t compromise breathability in any way by adding anything extra.
You can use a sheet but it has to be muslin cotton to remain breathable. You cannot use a mattress cover but you wouldn’t need to since the Newton cover is already waterproof
@@Fathercraft Thanks for the reply, appreciate all the reviews you do. It's really helping my wife and I make informed decisions about things we need for our upcoming baby! Appreciate you!
Absolutely! Shameless plug alert - we’ve got a bunch of useful stuff for soon-to-be parents at fathercraft.com/resources so be sure to check that out and let us know what you think!
If you use normal crib sheets and mattress protectors (instead of buying their waterproof cover which I understand is not waterproof on the infant side) would that make the mattress not breathable?
Actually they do have a waterproof option now so it is waterproof on both sides. And you can use a sheet but it needs to be muslin cotton to remain breathable.
The only problem with the hand-me-down logic is that you are never supposed to reuse sleeping materials between babies, especially crib mattresses, even if it's good condition.
Do you mind sharing your source for this information? Obviously there are some exceptions: mattresses that are old and worn, smell of mildew or damp, things like that. But, reusing a mattress, especially within a single home and in good condition , is perfectly fine.
@@Fathercraft This one concludes that there is a correlation between used crib mattresses and and increased risk of SIDS. www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC131017/
Thank you for the link. A couple of things to note. 1) The study doesn’t mention the conditions of the mattresses, how old the mattresses were, and or the type of mattresses studied (unless I overlooked it). That’s obviously going to play a huge role in the safety of the mattresses. 2) The study wasn’t able to determine cause and effect, only a correlation. 3) It mentions the strongest correlation with used mattresses from outside the home. In my opinion, the structural quality of the Newton mattresses plus the fact that there is no “outgassing” and the mattress cover can be machine washed definitely makes it safe to re-use. Again, just my opinion 🙂.
