From Wikipedia... "Applying a reverse polarity voltage, or a voltage exceeding the maximum rated working voltage of as little as 1 or 1.5 volts, can destroy the dielectric and thus the capacitor. The failure of electrolytic capacitors can be hazardous, resulting in an explosion or fire." Sounds like the beginning of a new series of videos !?

I love you are still using that Pot Noodle speaker ;D

"Pot Noodle Speaker"? That sounds like Boris Johnson at a press conference. Or that flatulent, beer-swilling, useless flap of skin named Nigel Fartage whenever he opens his mouth.

Electrolytic capacitors 'pop'. Bang! Being a more appropriate word though.

Is it using flaws in the transistors to make the noise? that's how they did it in some analogue synths like the Pro One. With some transistors less flawed than others, resulting in a noise oscillator that was a bit weak. Some use noise generators to lessen their tinnitus.

If I recall reading something it's amplifying the junction noise on over of the transistors, so I think you are right

Quite the cut at the end mate. Nice little devise! Also maybe you'd like to probe youtube for "Capacitor Gun". Just a though ;)

Is it wrong that I can smell the solder fumes whilst watching?

It would be "ok" to use for a "toy" Random Number Generator but I wouldn't use it for a CSRNG (Cryptographically Secure Random Number Generator). There's a whole lot more involved in a good CSRNG; it would be way to easy to influence the noise from this device for example (probably radiowaves) to 'force' a certain 'pattern' or value of noise.

an electrolytic cap connected backwards will tend to go pop!!

I feel we need to explore this now 😂

@@backofficeshow Yes indeed with different values and voltages :-)

@@backofficeshow Yes, get a bag of random caps off eBay - small ones, big ones, frighteningly large ones to go in PSUs. Then wire them up backwards. It's maybe a thing to do outside though.

@@fredflintstone1 Wear protective eyewear, put a plastic container (see through) over the cap. Trust me, it can make a huge mess.

Is it just a RF circuit tuned to an empty section of radio band?

Interesting, in guessing not intentionally, but it works be cool to put a transmitter near it and find out
