it's interesting the way in which Gothic shows that the Germanic languages were much more reminiscent of Latin and Greek RIGHT BEFORE the Dark Ages and then underwent rapid change through syncopating unstressed syllables

I have been following this channel for a few years now, and I have never had such experience, and I only watch from a smart phone, and have done so from different brands, and models. If it were the video, it would impact everyone viewing. It's far more likely to be a problem with your device, or your connection - not the video.

I really enjoyed this video; I enjoy the Old Norse videos, but I haven't studied ON, yet (although I 've recently bought some good books on it), w/ the bulk of my studies in Old Gmc languages being confined to OE (&, to a lesser extent, OHG) & Gothic, so this video was an interesting comparison to me.

Many thanks for this rare comparsion of Old Norse and Gothic using the New Testament. I was having a hard time following some the comparisons between the two languages. Around 8:20 you mentioned that "you can tell the Old Norse were conveted by Latin speakers because of their inflection of Jesus..." on the contrary, would it appear that speakers/writers of Gothic were converted by Greek speakers? The answer may have been implicit to an astute linguist.

Love your videos! A note about "villain" being "someone who lives on a villa". At the end of the Roman Empire, many of the very wealthy Romans retreated to their country estates, fortified them as best they could, and hired small armies of mercenaries to protect them. In many cases, these armies were made up of people who were little more than thugs and criminals with minimal training, but with the ability to fight. So, it's little wonder to me that the term for people living on a villa might quickly become a pejorative for an evil or criminal person.

Gothic is nothing that any Viking age North German or later would recognize. It is similar to Proto-Norse, but also that language has changed to be unrecognizable since after the Viking age.

I don't think it's true that they wouldn't understand a thing. The again I'm no expert.Some Guitisk below from Lambdins Introduction to Ancient Languages: Gothic. The old Saxon is my own translation. By North German I assume you mean North Germany thus old Saxon and not North Germanic ie Norse. old Saxon had is and ist, like Gutisk had ist, all from PG * isti. Singular nominative 'the or that ship' Thata skip in Gutisk 'the or that ship' That skip- Sahsisk Sa hunds in Gutisk 'the hound'- Gutisk Se hund sahsisk Sa fisks- Gutisk Se fisk- sahsisk Sa thuidans siuks ist 'the king is sick' se thiodan siok ist/is (saksisk old saxon) Sa thiudans ist mikils-Gutisk Sa thiodan/kuning ist/is mikil-Sahsisk Hwar ist sa thiudans? Where is the king? Gutisk didn't have a variant of king, see kongungr, cyning, kuning all from *kuningaz. Hwar is/ist se kuning/thiodan?

T and H, TH is D... Dor and Thor are gods.. the same. Could Goths simply mean gods? If not can we say it may be and add it the list of plausibilities.
@redwaldcuthberting7195
@redwaldcuthberting7195 8 месяцев назад
What do you mean? Thor isn't attested in Gutisk. Also Thor would likely look more like PG *thunraz in Gutisk. See Proto-Norse * þonaraʀ>thor. At a guess if thunraz got into Gutisk it'd look something like *thunrs or maybe thunja for 'thunderer' probably wrong in my guesses.

Dr. Crawford, I feel like you are the official prophet of Asatru. Abraham Jesus Mohammed Crawford I’m being facetious….
@nocturne000
@nocturne000 8 месяцев назад
That’s interesting. A knowledgeable expert on old Norse, who doesn’t push any sort of spirituality and has been fairly clear on how little we know about how people worshiped those particular Gods, seems like a prophet of a religion that believes in said Gods? I am in no way whatsoever trying to belittle people beliefs, as far as I’m concerned, faith is an incredibly personal thing and I don’t discredit anybody’s faith, or at least I try my best not to. That being said I’m just curious about what you mean. I think the idea of a very well studied person with no hidden motives, teaching Old Norse and other related things, being respected by those who’s faith is Asatru is cool. I mean I can’t tell how serious your comment is, I mean it could be a joke and I’m just a doofus who fell for it, but if that’s not the case I’m curious why someone who practices said beliefs might view Dr. Crawford this way. And I ask that respectfully, curiosity being my only motive, holding no other intent, if you’d be kind enough to take the time to answer. Take care.

@user-it9jf5ox8k Oh ok. I guess my mind was stuck on preconceptions of the more "popular" religions, or however you'd describe them. Well the way you put it makes it sound like something I want to look more into. The idea at the head of that "religion" is certainly something that interests me. Thank you kindly for the explanation, and showing me just how pigeon-holed my thinking was.

Also I was being facetious. My grandfather is 100% Danish and when he came to Canada he wore thors hammer and the teachers in elementary school made him take it off because they thought it was an upside down cross. The best way to describe asatru is each god is a room in your mind palace, when you pray or mediate find that calm connecting state with your deity “Odin wisdom” your seeking guidance for a task, just taking a moment to connect and get grounded. The more you do it and find your formula the better you’ll feel and the easier it becomes to find the answers within yourself. This is the best way to describe it to someone who thinks Asatru falls into the same category as “a one and only that you pray too directly”. Some people say Allah “for followers of Islam” has all the answers, Odin teaches us YOU must seek wisdom. YOU must be hospitable, YOU must be battle ready. The havamal guides us on how. How I interpret the havamal is I must Read Work out Eat healthy Be trust worthy Don’t sleep in Express my love and gratitude to every member of my family every day. Everyday I make a point to sped money in someone some how, preferably a child. 25cent gum, cup of coffee etc. Be honourable Be respectful & respect worthy. It’s a literal step by step guide on how to live life. When you leave your house are you prepared for the day? Did you have a balanced breakfast? Did you read & write a little something? Did you pray or mediate? Did you express your love to your loved ones? Are you battle ready? You could get mugged at any point. Wisdom is a big part of asatru I make a point to read educational literature and do a little writing, some poetry of my own, I’ve taken up drawing ✍️ and I do do random math problem before bed to whine down. I’m not trying to preach this is a very quick understanding from my view point of the havamal.
