Please don’t ever apologise for enthusiasm! Or for being brave enough to both try something new and sharing it to encourage others to try. Total respect for the nerdiness! Love the idea that you are planning to share it with your daughter.
Nature Journaling changed my life. I also got down the rabbit hole of reading a lot of nature writing. I started enjoying books by Tristan Gooley and (low key) live through him because I'm trapped in a city! Salamanders are really cool. In Romania as a kid I was told that if I let a Salamander walk across my wrist I'll be very good at sewing when I grow up! Just a fun little tidbit of Eastern European folklore! Anyway, beautiful video hope your AI research is going well.
@@averyintelligence I made a video on nature writing, and one on books only about mushrooms featuring Sheldrake's. Braiding Sweetgrass is also amazing.
Your illustrations are great. I tell my senior (university) ecology students when making natural history observations (sketches/notes) "you don't need to be a Rembrant, but just don't be a Picaso."
I been doing art for a while. Let me tell you life is so short. Enjoy what you do even if it’s art you consider ugly. I spend so many days doing ugly art that stirs emotions and good feelings, I love that. I spend days doing nice art I don’t enjoy. 🐸
Thanks@@ParkerNotes Maybe a wholistic one that maybe takes us through an example day that you have work or school and how you sprinkle in read/write outside of academic and work related activity. 🐢🐢🐢
🐢 There's definitely something very, very special about hand-drawn nature logs like this. And your art is very, very good! I'm no artist myself and never kept a nature log, so you are an inspiration as always. I'll probably start keeping one myself thanks to you, just as I've started reading a lot more, writing more and got into philosophy thanks to you. And also feel the urge to start more and more notebooks. It's truly an addiction. I've seen other people asking for a video on how you manage your time for writing, perhaps a "thinking / writing daily routine" sorta video? Anyways, would love to see it. Thank you very much!
Swans on Lake Miltmore in Lake Villa! I'd recognize that lake anywhere. My childhood home is up the street from that lake. I spent my whole childhood fishing, catching frogs, and hanging out there. Awesome.
When I played Red Dead Redemption 2, I always loved the sketches and the journal the main character kept during the game - never occurred to me to actually do it myself, but I’m definitely going to start now the summer is on the way, thanks!
🐢 You humility is refreshing. I don’t think I’ll start a nature log. I tend to like keeping these memories in my mind. Feel the moment. I feel that grabbing a camara to capture the moment would ruin the moment.
I love the idea of having it to show your kids to get them excited about nature. Thank you for sharing your work “in process”. As a perfectionist, I often don’t like to do things unless I can do it perfectly.. a big reason why I stopped trying watercolor but you’ve encouraged me to give it a try again.
I literally started doing a nature log last week, this is perfect timing lol. I've always enjoyed nature but remembering information about animals is difficult when you don't make the effort to study/research it. (I call it my "hunters notes" like in Monster Hunter XD)
🐢 I love logging my nature experiences and have had a special interest in identifying plants! I use to actually walk around my neighborhood in grade school just identifying my neighbors decorative plants because there were no nature parks close by enough for me to go alone. Now that I’m grown and moved out I’ve expanded my botanical knowledge and created a notebook where I draw the plants I see, write their Latin names and information form where they like to grow to what medicinal and cultural uses they have. So fun! Love what you do man, keep up the awesome work.
I recently started a field journal for fun. I use a Field Notes brand notebook with blank pages. It’s pocket sized so no trouble to carry it around and I record random nature. Like a scientist I record date, time, location, description and include a quick sketch. It’s heaps fun.
This was a great video. I live in Chicago, and I am agoraphobic. As part of my exposure therapy, I've been walking by the lakefront. I found myself really interested in different flora and the prairie grasses that prevent erosion. It's been really therapeutic. I'm going to start journaling about it so I remember more.
I've been wanting to set up a nature journal for a while now. I have severe anxiety that's likely morphed into agoraphobia, but I'm an outdoors kid at heart and am dying to get back out there. I'm particularly keen on mycology and ornithology, and a nature journal would be absolutely fantastic to help me learn to identify mushrooms. It's a shame we don't have much in the way of herping in Ireland; I used to spend hours catching Garter snakes when I lived in Canada. Also, there's no such thing as bad art imo - seeing your drawings made me happy, and want to try this sometime with my young nieces. Good days! 🍄🐍
This is awesome!! Thank you for your kind words! It would be nuts if this video played a small roll in helping you fight off the agoraphobia, that'd make all the work worth it for real! Thanks again!!
🐢I’ve been wanting to make a similar log but of the plants in my area…thank you for the reminder and the push that I needed! I think your drawings skills are already improving!
I love this so much! I keep an herbarium of plants that I find around my area. All you need is a thick book to press the plants and a journal to put them in ❤
This is a great idea. I’ve wanted to learn how to sketch/ draw for a while now but I’ve been intimidated with starting. This has inspired me to start a nature journal of my own! And hopefully I can share it with my son and he’ll start his own one day. 🐢
🐢🐢🐢 This reminded me of a thing from an "activity suggestions book" I had as a kid - one of the activities in it was a similar concept to your nature journal, but for birds specifically. I have liked birds as long as I can remember, so might have to revisit that one, haha
Loved your journal. Your videos have helped me be more consistent in updating my own journals, so thank you. Not a lot of people get this passions for notebooks and journals so also thank you for sharing your interest. And I always thought it’d be cool to have a notebook like Darwin’s, hadn’t thought about it in a while so thank you for that suggestion. 🐢🐢🐢
You have so many different types of turtles and frogs! 🐢 We don't see them out in the road as much here in Seattle. We do have a Slough where you can rent a kayak/canoe nearby and paddle in for turtles.
I have a lochby journal just like that and I'm inspired to start a nature log. I'm an artist just like you so i know it's going to be a great learning experience and gives me an excuse to use my journal more often. I hope you'll share more about your nature journaling in the future because you sound very enthusiastic about it which I enjoyed throughout watching this video ❤️🎨
🐢I love this. I'm actually working on a book on backyard naturalism for adults, so I am glad to see that there is interest; I am often frustrated by all the rich resources for children, but rarely for curious adults. As an aside, as a former Latin professor, I greatly support you learning Latin. :D It's easy peasy. And your frog drawings are GORGEOUS!🐢
Thank you so much! When you finish that book, send me a copy and I'll promote it on this channel 🙌🙌 Parker Settecase 1940 N Municipal Way Unit # 369 Round Lake, IL 60073
Thank you for That. Reminded me that i wanted to do also research on Flowers and animals which I see on Mountains. Im Bad at drawing, but to take time and tying to put all the Details in, is like Meditation. Once I did it with my Plants. Drawing them and put information which I researched.
I'm so glad that you began the nature logging practice or nature journaling as I refer to it! I began regular nature journaling in 2019. As someone previously mentioned in the comments, John Muir Laws and his books and resources are a must. I think of him as my mentor as his channel was the first I came across with him teaching nature journaling classes. Keep at it, and thanks for sharing your experience so far. :)
🐢 thanks for sharing the video. By coincidence I was thinking the same thing when walking through the forest last Sunday. Great idea to start logging. Thank you for the great suggestion and content 👍🏻
Oh let's go!!! I didn't know they've been around that long. Super quality stuff. Lots of people ask for alternatives to the leather cover sponsors so I'm glad to have one to promote
it's a very cool Idea, I've been thinking about nature and it's immense beauty lately, i like to read nature descriptions, movies and poems. I'd like to keep a log. nature is amazing! 📓🐢
You are my inspiration! I relate to the notebook mess that we can get into. These notebooks and journals of mine form my whole life. First things I’m saving in case of fire. You inspire my channel as well! Keep sharing
🐢 this is such a wonderful video - and i can't wait to start doing entries like this in my journal (which i use for all sorts and forms of journalling haha). side note - i think your drawings are quite lovely, and that your attitude toward them is even lovelier. It all starts with a dot. You're trying something new, doing amazingly well for a beginner, and you're exactly right - the sketches will only get better from here! What matters is getting that memory and special experience down :)
🐢 This is a great idea - might have to do one of these. My girls like going out and looking for bugs and animals and this would be a great way to capture that vs taking a picture and having it be swallowed up in the sea of pictures on my phone haha. Also would make a nice memento in the future to hand down the generations.
And this was the video that made me subscribe. Gonna start a digital nature log. I have to do digital because of blindness and accessibility, but thanks a lot for the video. It’s a great idea.
🐢Love it, man! Just finished the video. It’s great seeing your drawings. You’re giving me more ideas for more ways to incorporate drawing into my life too. Already seeing an improvement in yours too! Total aside, but the Proko channel on RU-vid has tons of free resources for drawing if you so wanted. Keep it up, bro!
Nice video. I've been trying to get better about being a little more loose with journals and such, as opposed to being tied into a specific digital system (digital doesn't work well for me... and I have to remind myself of that sometimes), or into specific systems like the Zettelkasten system that is pretty popular. One approach I've determined to try is using more 1/2 letter sized loose leaf sheets of printer paper. There is a thing called an Everbook that uses that idea, and it's great for certain things. Then I'll file those into 3 ring binders. The benefit is that I can then rearrange the sheets to better suit my needs, rather than having them bound out of order. I wanted to do a binder system for knowledge years ago... then got sucked into all those systems by the various productivity gurus... Also, didn't know you were in my neck of the woods. It always interesting to find folks that are in the general Chicago suburbs. 🐢
🐢Another great video! Someone below mentioned the notebook featured in RD2? Reminded me how much I loved the Traveller's Notebook in the Uncharted series... and just like them, never occurred to me I could do the same format... "DOH!" :)
What a great idea! As a kid I was so interested in nature, I still have many encyclopedias and kids' guides to nature. Down the road I've become much more interested in the abstract world, literature and philosophy (I found philosophy appealing as a kid too, but then it was just one of many possible (to pursue down the road) interests). But you've reminded me that although I may not be interested in biology so much now (or like, at all, almost 😅😂) I love observing nature. Especially birds, birds are so fun. And I love parks and forests, because I love trees so much (I know it sounds like such a zoomer thing to say. But I think that all human beings love nature, so it may sound stupid to say "oh, I love trees and forest so much!". Anyway xd) My biological interests might have depleted, but it'd be cool to get again into drawing trees, and maybe birds too. They're hard to draw tho. I'm not sure if I have motivation 😂 Anyway, thanks Parker, for another great inspiration! 😊
I like using the Merlin app to identify bird calls when im out and about. It's run by Cornell and has a great database of birds for all over the world!
I recently started trying to do urban sketching, but there are plenty of woodland areas here in Pittsburgh and nearby and I'd love to get into this. I'm not very good at drawing at aaalll haha. Also, I think I'm actually gonna get that notebook cover. Thanks for the recommendation haha. I'd love a Galen Leather zipper folio, but the price... haha.
🐢 Recently I have read 'Field Notes on Science & Nature' by Michael Canfield. It's really inspiring. Just like your videos. This was the last push to start logging my experience in nature. Thanks. 🙂
i try to be outside as much as possible but my issues is sensitive skin so the bugs always...bug..me..lol. i still love being outside though. anytime i can be around animals too i prefer.
Ha, how do you keep your dogs away from them long enough to interact with the little creatures you find? …. But cool idea! And those are some nice/decent drawrings too. 🐢
I'm not sure if any one else mentioned this, but I thought it was really cool that you have Jack Kirby's Fourth World and The Fourth World by John Byrne omnibus books. By chance have you read Grant Morrison's Final Crisis or Multiversity? I would be curious to hear about any opinions you may have about the Morrison incorporating incorporating various philosophical concepts from Plotinus, Plato, and St. Augustine (at least from what I could discern from my read throughs). What are your opinions regarding the execution of such concepts in comic book form?
Haha congratulations!! I think you're the first 🙌🙌 I have lots of thoughts on Morrison's neoplatonism, I'm actually launching a new channel to talk about philosophy and superheroes where I'll cover stuff like this in depth
For maintaining leather notebooks (or leather-bound books), putting some mineral oil on a cloth and wiping them down to keep the leather from drying out is quick and cheap. You only need to do it once every few years.
Hey! I hope you see my commentary. I'm christian and I want to master theology and philosophy. But I want to to self-study in philosohy but I have but little knowlege on philosophy. Could you please maybe make a video or tell me with what books to start (books that are in Amazon since I'm from Honduras, that's the best option for me) I would really appreciate,I hope to master philosophy in all of its branches!
Where I live we get rabbits, deer, cows, goats, donkeys, turtles, lizards and a bunch of Squirrels ( they like to drive the dog nuts 😂) 🐢 and of course spiders lots and lots of spiders. 🕷️
If you want to go down the Nature journal rabbit hole, I highly recommend “The Laws Guide to Nature Drawing and Journaling” by John Muir Laws, his RU-vid channel, and his website. 🤓
that’s such a good idea! but do you have any suggestions for someone who lives in a dangerous big city? Here in Brazil it’s not very safe and on the contrary of what people think, there is not much nature near the city, at least not a safe area! (I apologize for any english mistake)
Perhaps you can make a nature log of some of the species that live in your overall area, that you may see if you travel in Brazil. If you see anything when you're out, perhaps mentally log it and journal about it when you're safe at home, so you can keep yourself safe in your city. Perhaps even journal about areas or species you'd like to see eventually; for example, I live in Europe but would love to see some of the American deserts eventually. I could make a log about which plants I'd be interested in seeing, what animals I'd be looking out for, etc. First and foremost, stay safe 🍄
@@RoundSeal that’s a great solution! thank you so much! I was thinking just today about American deserts, It look’s very beautiful! I would love to visit there sometime!
