When I visited Dead Horse Bay earlier this year I did not expect to find a chilling reminder of the threat of Nuclear War! It took me right back to my childhood and the anxiety I experienced about that very subject! At the beginning of May 2022 I took a trip to New York and visited Dead Horse Bay to go mudlarking. It is somewhere I have always wanted to visit since taking part in a small documentary about it a few years ago:-
abcnews.go.com...
For my first visit I met up with Merrill Kazanjian, a detectorist and mudlark who has the channel ‪@MetalDetectingNYC‬ . We had a fantastic day and I also had the pleasure of meeting the veritable Queen of Dead Horse Bay, Adele Daly. An excellent documentary has been made about Adele which you can see here:-
• The 2021 511C DocFest
I also had the pleasure of meeting Jeff and avid mudlark who enjoys searching at Dead Horse Bay.
Thank you profusely to the family of Bob Luchun who allowed me to share information about Bob's ID tag and who sent me photos. Also thanks to Alex who provided me invaluable information.
We found some amazing artefacts with incredible stories behind them. This is a particularly long video as I didn't want to miss anything out. I hope you enjoy it. I'll be adding more info to this description later but Im rushing out now!!

Thank you for watching this extremely long video about my first outing to Dead Horse Bay in New York with Merrill Kazanjian of @metaldetectingNYC, Adele Daly, the veritable Queen of Dead Horse Bay and Jeff Marinello. We had the best ever time and there are two particularly magnificent finds here which I hope you will enjoy finding out about. If you would like to watch an excellent documentary about Adele, then you can find it there. It is the first documentary featured on this video of documentaries made by the students of Columbia Journalism School's class of 2021 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Tzbaw66n0rU.html

I haven’t read all the comments, so I don’t know if anyone has already said that Frank Arthur Ingargiola was enlisted in World War II. He was born in New York on Aug. 7, 1918. He was enlisted in July, 1944 but quickly discharged in Sep., 1944, due to a disease. Theresa (maiden name probably Sarafidi, as her mother was listed as Sadie Sarafidi in the 1930 census) was his mother. He was a Longshoreman, when enlisted, with brown hair & eyes & “ruddy” complexion. His father was Nunzio Ingargiola, who had been born in Italy & emigrated to New York in 1912. Frank was listed in the 1995 Brooklyn Directory.

As an American, just wanted to say thank you for sharing Merrill, Jeff and Adele's excitement at finding and gifting you our "old" coins. You are finding coins that are several hundred years old yet you still were interested and engaged. It looked like a very fun (and exhausting) day. The George and Josephine pendant is very poignant, I hope George made it back safely and had a happy life. The dogtags for children's identification was also poignant, especially with the great sadness we are experiencing now regarding the loss of so many innocent children to a senseless school shooting.

This is literally one of the best videos you’ve ever made. I’m so glad that you got to Dead Horse Bay!!! I started watching Merrill’s channel after I started watching yours, and I remember thinking, “Nicola would LOVE this beach!” You found so many great things! 👍 That dog tag IS a reminder of scarier times - I was born in 1968, and still remember having atomic bomb drills (!) in primary school in the 1970s. Our school had a fallout shelter in the basement, with big cans of water, crates of Graham crackers, and cots. Our 5th grade teacher gave us a tour, and all of these things had been there since the Kennedy era.
@nicolawhitemudlark
@nicolawhitemudlark 2 года назад

@Lucinda_Jackson
@Lucinda_Jackson 2 года назад
@@nicolawhitemudlark We had those little books, too! All about how a shelter should be built and how to stock a shelter. And then what happens during and after a nuclear attack and what should be done, how to proceed. When I was in 7th grade in 1967, age 12, we actually used the small blue books to study it a bit each day with tests as we went along for a month or so. Then the course was repeated again the following year, 8th grade. We had had the duck and cover drills during elementary school, but they sort of run together in my mind with the tornado drills since I lived in the Midwest. For those, we were ushered out into the hallways, away from windows and doorways of rooms, then we were instructed to sort of hunker down or squat with our heads down between our knees and our arms covering our heads. Way too much fun! 😂 We were not tagged, though. I had no idea that had been done!

The pipe they blessed me with had a elegant simple design and 4 inches of stem. I am utterly amazed and shocked that it has rolled around somewhere and was still perfectly intact, it is utterly amazing and I am so honored to hold such grand pieces of history from mudlarking and bottle dump finds. LOL I HATE dusting hahaha but these won't collect much dust because I am always picking them up to examine them again. I don't know why, but the silver pendant made me burst into tears. I don't know if its because you were here in NYC, where I am. I have watched other items with inscriptions be found in the Thames, but being close to home, and found in Brooklyn, where my grandparents met, made me think of them and the photo I have of them sitting on the stoop in Brooklyn in the 1930s. It made me think how George and Josephine are not with us any longer, but regardless of what their relationship was - friends, siblings, school sweethearts - just that someone made such a thoughtful gesture and that we got to see that act of tender kindness, because it was unearthed from in the mud, maybe 100 years later, and it just really touched me on so many levels. I always wanted to mudlark the Thames, with its centuries and centuries of history, but there are things right hear too, that can be just as great. Maybe, I could get muddy here?

Nicola, I was born in 1957 and can remember in early 60's in first or second grade being taught by teachers to get under our desks with hands covering head. When they said it was to protect us in case of a bomb attack. There was an alarm that would sound that told us to get under the desk! Tensions was high for us waiting on the alarm to sound anytime. Kinda sucked some of our innocence away. Then in middle 60's they said the alarm was for tornados at which we was to go to hallway facing our lockers and cover our heads waiting. Living in Oklahoma I remember doing that many times!

Despite my hopelessly hungover state,I found myself absolutely riveted by this fascinating place! Adele is a hoot! Her best quote,amongst others: “I’m tired of your stoopid nincompoop stuff!” 😂 Oh and in my opinion,the buffalo(bison) nickel is our finest coin,it embraces the greatness and majesty of this nation like no other coin. Everyone should own one❤️

I would like to add one more thing: Nicola,you were here in the USA during some troubling events,heartbreaking events,tragedy,repeated,seemingly without end. Guns. This video,it took me back to a place where I was proud to be from this country,once again! I thank you for that,and I look forward to seeing more of your adventures in America! 🥰

Ok so I am commenting as I view,because I am currently incapable of commenting on this video in its entirety. Robert. Bob. His little is tag. The story you unveiled. It made me weep and smile at the same time! I am no stranger to tears,but when they fall upon my smiling face,that is a rare and beautiful moment indeed. Thank you ,Nicola.

Absolutley fascinating and deeply personal bits of history found there in which a short bit of time. Your fellow mudlarks couldn’t have been nicer, more welcoming and charming. Their ribbing among one another is like a big NY hug and you can tell they’re just one big muddy family who care about one another. Thanks for bringing us along for a wonderful time. It was nice to meet some new mudlarks on this side of the pond. Can’t wait to see where you’ll take us next time ♥️

Loved your reverse-color striped shirt, Nicola. This was a truly unique mudlarking experience here in the US. One thing you will always find in New York -- characters! And it appears that you certainly did find them and some wonderful artifacts, too. As always, a wonderful, thoughtful video. xx Karen

What a day at Dead Horse Bay! Such a different Mudlark experience… the people are so generous and had a good time teasing each other. Adel’s gift to you , the tags and coins are perfect souvenirs. The history is a sad reflection on many episodes of history since the invention of the atomic bomb. I was a teenager during the Cuban Crisis and we had emergency rehearsals in case of attack. We were filed to the basement and crouched heads down by the walls so we could be easily found if the school collapsed. In reality it was a mass grave. I hope our children never go through it again. Sorry for my gloomy memories. I do look forward to what you have in store next week. Thank you Nicole.

This video was wonderful as usual, never too long! I am so glad you had a great time in the USA! There are so many of us from the United States that love to watch your videos and look forward to them. I was born in 1951 and in my small town in Kansas we did not have name tags given to us by the government. So that information was new to me also and very interesting. Nicola, thank you for adding this footage of your trip in here. I live in the southern states of America. I’m so sorry that you had to come in contact with such a rude person. I can assure you all Americans are NOT like this and THAT woman is the one that needs a kick in the butt apparently she thinks she needs to be a bully to get anywhere in this world. People like this, I would distance myself from every chance. Again, how RUDE! Keep up the good work. We love to see you. ❤❤❤❤❤

Welcome to New York, Nicola. I noticed at 13:45, you pushed over a large bit of metal, but seemingly proceeded on without investigating it. What it appeared to be was an antique, document, seal embosser. A piece of paper would be slid between two circular, metal plates, then the user would apply downward pressure on the handle, impressing whatever was engraved on the plates into the paper. In the U.S., this sort of stamp is quite common to find on birth, business and other important records. These cast iron, manual, embossing seals, have been replaced by automatic machines and are now collected for their beautiful design and decoration, as well as for the information found on their engraved plates. What an interesting and enjoyable day on the shore, with interesting and enjoyable people.

The engraving on the pendant reminds me of the font style seen in American military posters during WW 1. Perhaps George was courting Josephine (not yet betrothed) prior to his deployment overseas to fight in what was then called The Great War. Hence why it said luck, not love which would have been socially appropriate for the era. The school tag was interesting. Yes imagine how a generation of children must have felt wearing them and knowing why. Along with the story of a boy who would later grow up to serve his country. Wonderful finds.

I love curmudgeonly old-school New Yawkers! Back in the late ‘90s, we had a post-Christmas weekend trip there. After dinner in Chelsea, we took a cab back to our hotel, and I sat up front with our cabbie. He was very much like Adele, and I just loved talking with him about his family and his life in the city. One of my favorite local-encounter memories of all of my trips.

Adele (if you are reading this) you truly do speak your truth, a sharp shooter from the hip and the real McCoy from New York City, where you do not hold back from what you mean, a true NY character. Merrill you know your stuff, I shall pop over to your channel for a looksie. Jeff/Geoff (not sure which way you spell it) You found some awesome finds too. With regards to the metal dog-tags the school children were asked to wear in the 50s, it reminded me of the papers labels our children wore pinned to them when they were sent off to be evacuated in the countryside. Same reason to identify the child, but certainly big difference in the means.
