A Pagan Summer Solstice in the Forest | Jāņi · 5

For this year's summer solstice I spent time with the forest and celebrated Jāņi, a traditionally pagan Latvian celebration.
Although it wasn't quite how it could have been this year, and it's definitely not the proper version as people in Latvia celebrate it, I made the most of it - making a vainags (flower crown), spending lots of time with the birds, picking berries, visiting the birch trees I tapped in the spring, swimming in the lake, and playing my kokle.
I also spent a lot of time ruminating on how many aspects of indigenous cultures have been lost across the world over time - land based living used to be the way most if not all people lived, and seasonal celebrations were a center point to these cultures.
Why have "Western" civilizations lost this knowledge and way of being?
And, I couldn't help but share some thoughts about the issue of invasive species, because as I was going out on the land for the solstice I was particularly noticing how affected certain areas are, and just how much most people don't know about it.
‣ Some clarification and additional info on what I was saying about the gypsy moth if you feel like reading:
• Although the damage they inflict is concerning as I've mentioned, it may be too early still to know the long term effects of the gypsy moth being in this landscape. Perhaps it is mostly a visual issue; healthy trees have been rebounding in the years following severe defoliation, granted defoliation isn't heavy year after year. But, trees that are already stressed/unhealthy are more likely to be killed by extreme defoliation. Time will tell.
• Also, forest dynamics are far more complex than what immediately meets the eye. There may be unforeseen benefits to the upper canopy of a forest being defoliated, such as added sunlight and fertilizer reaching the forest floor (you can hear the caterpillar poop raining in infested areas 😶).
• There is also a virus that is starting to affect dense populations of gypsy moth, which is good news!

I love how you talked about people living like this for 1000s of years, an argument I often use when people tell me I live "weird" I live on a big plot of land in a old wagon in the middle of the forrest and I have never been happier

You pulling out an axe and chopping down trees on the path is exactly what I needed to see today, What a women!! I thought your Kulning was very beautiful. I myself mostly only celebrate midsummer and yule. You look like a forest fairy playing your kokle. Beautiful video, and thank you for sharing the information about your forests.

Beautiful filming, and thank you for sharing your ruminations which resonate deeply for me. I sometimes despair, but then my hope in the strength of the Great Mother is renewed every time I meditate in a hidden sacred grove in my local old growth forest park, watch the bees, ladybugs and butterflies tend my garden, and I awaken to sparrow songs and energetic seagulls fishing at the ocean shore steps away from the backyard of the apartment I am fortunate to live in. I listen to the wise teachings of the elders of our local First Nations on the unceded territories I am privileged to live on, remember the vibration of my shamanistic Korean birth mother's voice as she sang songs about the sun and sea while harvesting rice under the full moon and twinkling stars...and my tears of grief and feelings of fear transform into joy and peace. Thank you for sharing your thoughts, emotions and beautiful Latvian solstice celebration with us! Bright blessings to you and all who celebrate the turn of the wheel! I have subscribed and look forward to seeing your other videos. 🌞🌻🐦💕

Before being colonized by spain, we, Filipinos have amazing traditions, and beliefs honoring nature. We believed that there are supernatural creatures in the forests, or anywhere around us really that deserves respect. No, they are not ghosts they are fairies, gods, goddesses, etc. I hate the people/ countries who colonized Philippines and erase our culture and identity. Our country is behind today because of them! Because until now we are recovering our true culture. And I totally relate to you! Whenever i am with nature i feel that i am in my true home. My heart is happy, and my mind is in peace.

3:57 It mostly disappeared with the spread of Christianity.. Due to the popularity of Pagen festivals, the Christians decided to hijack them, and try to make them there own.. Hence Christmas in December the winter solstice etc. There are still many Pagan symbol that have survived to this day, too many to list here.. Personally, I love what Paganism is all about, being in tune with the changing seasons, and generally respecting nature !!

Nice video! Yes, in Latvia, we have preserved many traditions of pre-Cristian and foreign invasion times. In Latvian Sun calendar we have 8 big celebrations, wich marks the end of one season and the start of next one. Summer Solstice is the most popular one, widely celebrated across country.

And scary at the same time, some of the things you said and the landscape kind of made me Think about Lord of the rings, the great eye, times are getting darker, it somehow feels darker to look at when the trees are dead its weird and really sad! I do agree that losing our ancient traditions and customs has had horrible effects on our civilization and ecology. I do see this starting to change in the West, as more of us rediscover and re-adopt many of these traditions and folk ways of our ancestors. Large scale globalism, extensive urban and suburban sprawl, corporatism, industrialization of our food supply, excessive consumerism and materialism have nearly destroyed us. In all fairness, even our Christian ancestors were much more in touch with the seasons, and the natural environment around them. Considering most were from rural farmsteads and small villages. As some here have mentioned, many of our pagan traditions were saved and adapted by Christians.
@gwendelyne
@gwendelyne Год назад
You raise many good points, though I will say that pagan traditions were not saved by people's forced conversion to Christianity, rather Christianity adapted it's dogma onto existing folk traditions in order for the conversion to be more easily accepted by people... a nuanced conversation for sure!
@KingCatsTube
@KingCatsTube Год назад
@@gwendelyne thanks for responding; traditions, and certain aspects of seasonal celebrations were not saved as much as adapted to fit Christianity, some things such as the sun wheel or May pole were never given a Christian alternate meaning. Pagan Europeans continued to celebrate things such as Yule, midsummer and other holidays, so The Christian church attached new meanings to these celebrations. No Christian dogmas was adapted to any pagan customs, including seasonal traditions or folkways, dogma would be something such as the virgin birth of Jesus, the Trinity, the resurrection of Jesus, etc. Would there have been a number of pagans forced to convert, at certain times and places, yes. Although large numbers willingly converted, a good example of this is Ireland.
@gwendelyne
@gwendelyne Год назад
@KingCatsTube oh no my friend, I respect and agree with most of what you're saying but Ireland is certainly not a good example of willing conversion 🥲 perhaps some to save their own lives; the English committed genocide, land theft, suppression of the native Irish culture and language upon penalty of death or torture, started an Irish slave trade, they raped the land and cut down the sacred oak groves intentionally to drive out what they saw as a heathen culture and way of life. The Irish weren't left with much of a choice. Their culture, language, lifeways, freedom, land, and lives were taken from them by force.
