Did Lyndon Johnson always believe in civil rights, even though he fought against legislation early in his political career? Legendary writer and biographer Robert Caro, whose archives are now a part of our collections, says yes. Watch a new video with Caro as he examines a final draft page from his "The Years of Lyndon Johnson" series. The author gives a glimpse into his writing methods and, on this particular page, how he linked two key moments-a telephone call Johnson had with civil rights leader Roy Wilkins and Johnson's time as a teacher during his college years-to illustrate the arc of Johnson's approach to civil rights. "If you want people to read nonfiction," says Caro, "it has to be written on the same level and with the same care as great works of fiction."
