A Pathway to Understanding Open D Tuning Ep. 2: Slide!

I really think everybody should spend at least one week of their guitar life playing around with slide. It reminds us to focus on tone, control, melody, and listening. Slide ain't like shredding scales - you gotta really know what you mean to do and how you're going to do it.
You gotta MEAN the notes that you play. Such a great thing to remember!

Nice work, sensei! Two more slide tips. Besides blocking, learn to momentarily leave the index finger that's behind the slide on the string(s) if you lift the slide off the string. Avoids an intermittent note from an open string from ruining your nice solo and is another means to achieve tasteful control of note duration. Lastly, keep in mind that the string(s) will get louder as you slide up. No biggie if you're only moving a couple of frets. But move five or more frets and the increase in volume may be an affront to your audience. Solutions include a deft movement of your volume pot, a volume pedal or you can include a compressor in your signal chain (ala Little Feat).

I think you should drag your left hand index to mute strings behind slide. Not just when you lift off. Unmuted, sympathetic vibration of other strings behind the slide, especially with any gain, can ruin a take with excess noise.

I'm 75 and usually play at lot including professionally. But I've recenty had hand probems so I tuned a tele to open D just to fool around. (after many years playing slide in ipen G) AND THEN you addressed hands and old age. I've been lucky, my hands have held up well -- but it's scary and frankly depressing to even think that it's "over." So If all I can do while my hand is on the mend is learning to block -- so be it. Thanks man.

Playing slide WELL is a long journey, as doing almost anything well is. But the first time I played slide I was surprised how many familiar riffs just fell right out of the guitar as I went along. Not to say it's easy or that I'm good at it, but it's fun to play something that sounds so good so fast.

Eric, this is an all-time great video. I've played Open D slide since 1975. Badly enough. I never figured out blocking; I just sort of palm muted with left hand, and used fingers behind the slide on right hand as well. So, thanks for that. Also, the idea of licks BEHIND the slide/chord position had never occurred to me! I'm a slow learner. I only found this out recently but while I knew the famous story about Lowell George injuring his finger on a model aeroplane so that Ry Cooder had to do the slide part on Willin', I didn't know that Lowell had permanently injured his hand and was only able to play slide after that, as his fingers couldn't do normal chord positioning. To me, he was the king of slide tone, along with Ryland and Duane.

Only a week to get this down before we spin off into another wonderful Haugentangent (its a word? - well now it is). "There's the flat 5, one of the coolest notes..." The devil you say. "Why am I doing this to myself?" A question to ask every day. Thanks; no need to call me out, but, you explained blocking better than anyone.

I am the world's worst slide player. Every time I've messed around with I sound like a two year old. Gonna work on it, though. Haven't followed you on Spotify but I did buy your EP when you released it. It's pretty good. People should check it out.

Okay I've been working on this for a while and have actually made some progress. The advice that has helped me most was to use my other fingers to brace behind the slide. I think I was trying to do that before, but since I didn't realize how important it was I'd get sloppy and my hands would spread out. It really helps keep the slide parallel to the frets. Still fretting out a lot, though. Just need to practice. Also I might sound better if I were in an open tuning. I'm not at home and the only two guitars here have floating trems, and tuning those to open is a pain in the ass (I'm really lazy, I guess).

Also - notice that the slide can't really cover all 6 strings at once. The radius of the fretboard makes it so you can only cover 2-3 strings at a time and get good contact. Sometimes that's the problem!

Great vid😁. If you like the Crowes have you heard 'Izzy Stradlin and the JuJu Hounds' re Izzy's first solo album? Rumour has it Marc Ford is uncredited on the opening track. That album and Crowes 'Southern Harmony..' are two of my faves 👍

Yes! I remember covering "Shuffle it All" in my band when I was 15! Marc Ford = one of the all time greats! AAAAAA plus Izzy Stradlin is eternally fascinating to me - one of the most reclusive rock heroes ever!

01:23 Guilty!! Although I would argue that it sorta works in SOME situations.

What about muting strings behind slide with left hand? I didn’t see you do that but have heard it’s important to keep strings from buzzing, or are you accomplishing same thing with right hand blocking?

Great question, wondering the same!

Yeah! The slide mittens! Your fingers are supporting the slide and resting on the strings

What cracks me up, is that when you used the pick instead of blocking with fingers, it still sounded bad-ass because you can't play crappy! Hahahaha... Yeah, this is me on a bit of tequila. Don't feel bad about the Spotify thing... I have no social media or anything else. Dude, you are the Bomb...

Did you ever have the Bop-It toy in the 00s? That's all I can hear when you say "block it" 🤣. Love this lesson, gonna give it a go today!

And you said "but better"! We've been saying "do it again, but better" for years in our house, but had completely forgotten where it had come from until recently when we found Bop-It in the loft. 🤣
