I always took it as a person trying to form a relationship with someone they love and not getting anything back from the other person. The other person is so damaged and incapable of having that kind of relationship that it can never happen. The person confessing their love and trying to have this relationship was 'expecting just a little bit too much from the wounded'. He 'threw them the obvious' in how he felt about them but they 'don't see at all'. Just imagine the tragedy of that. Knowing that a person is actually incapable of giving you back what you're giving to them, no matter what you try.

This is not only my favorite APC song but has been my favorite song for 20 years. I like Smashing Pumpkins and Deftones more but nothing has come close to dethroning this song. It is perfection to me and has meant the world to me. It has aged and grown with me and helped me through my darkest moments. I unabashedly admit that I have a tattoo of the artwork on the single. I know other people won't feel the same as I do about it but it has unequivocally changed my life for the better and I owe an eternal debt of gratitude for this band for creating this masterpiece.

This is a song about 3 people Maynard had differences with in his life, they were all libra’s , and he sits back and watches them fight it out over which of them it is.

I feel the live Leno version is so highly regarded is because its the only recorded intimate performance of the original version. Everyone is on point and performing it perfectly. One of a first times most people got to see Maynard in a somewhat normal presentation compared to Tool and you get to hear Paz's violin elevate the song that much more. Fantastic performance and I appreciate you doubled up on this one because both the music video and live version are a must see for everyone. 😀

Here are the meanings from Maynard's mouth if anyone's interested: April 2000: "If this song sounds bitter its because it is and I am"..(after the song ends) "Allow me to expand. I was in this relationship with someone who was so terrified to show me who they were that she basically acted or slept her way through 9 months of the relationship.. and then just disappeared. I kinda wrote these words to kinda work through that and hope someday she would hear it. So as it turns out she calls me after a year of being completely gone.. heard the record.. loves it! Just didnt get it. Ironic isn't it." APC Website circa 2001: "Being overlooked" Amotion music video commentary summary: He initially had this belief that everyone had the intention to better themselves and seek out truth but in reality its not the case. They are content with who they are and they way things are instead of bettering themselves and this song is about other people who recognize that energy in others and they cling to those people like barnacles or parasites and feed off that positive energy and it just so happened that he had several individuals in his life, who didn't recognize what he had to offer and it was 9 different people that had a birthday around the same time so he called it 3 Libras to let them fight over who it was about as his little vindictive revenge.

One of my buddies plays acoustic sets at the local bars and when he does this song wherever he's at the bar go nuts

Maynard has said he has 9 friends who are Libras and who fit this description of the type of person he’s describing in the song; so he left it to them to figure out who of them he was talking about.

I love how Maynard's eyes were closed when singing the last part, "..you don't See me.."

I just basically figured it's about thinking the world of someone (the 'someone' seemingly being an obviously flawed person), but that person just doesn't care and overlooks you.

For me, this song is definitely tied to relationships, heartbreak, and unreciprocated appreciation. Every time I hear it, I can clearly see me circa 2001-2002 typing the lyrics in an email to send to a friend with benefits that I wanted more from. He had a dragon tattoo with huge wings on his back and recognized my name from a song, so these lyrics seemed to fit perfect.

I can't even imagine what it would like to be in the audience for the Jay Leno performance.... Lucky bastards ;)

Maynard wrote these lyrics about 3 so-called friends (all libras) in his life, at the time, that he felt were very fake towards him and their friendships with him.

I think it's about empty relationships that he's never felt that People(maybe females in his relationships) see him for someone who is famous as stuff but not connecting with him more deeply who he really is. He has said he had some very rocky past relationships so maybe that's what it means that's kinda what I get from it anyways. Or maybe someone else not opening up as well.

I might suggest checking out Billy Howerdel's (the guitarist) band, Ashes Divide, particularly Forever Can Be.

It kills me how Leno greets Maynard at the end.... "Thanks guy." -__- Well done Leno....well done. Good job singing....guy.

Please do every track off Thirteenth Step as it’s highly regarded as their best album by many (me included). After that, I say pick and choose.

Side note: It's nice to hear you say "regardless" and not the made up word that so many people use, "irregardless".

One of the best ( if not THE best ) live bands is A Perfect Circle and Tool

Always thought it was about the difficulty of finding that theoretical best person in the world for you when there are 8 billion people walking around. I think the video is depicting the hollow w/ broads in lieu of that and it's not the life he dreamed about as a boy per se. You should come in hot for the next album to keep the momentum going w/ songs like The Noose and Outsider.

This is probably one of their more commercially accessible songs, musically. Meaning-wise, I think a lot of lovers of the song, me included, felt it spoke directly to how we have felt. Not seen. Used. Just another notch on the bedpost. But I think this song to them is a lot like Perfect Drug to NIN. Not their favorite by any means. They changed their live performance of this a lot! It’s this weird, more digitized version now.

If you want to find out a little more about Maynard you should go to Joe Rogan podcast he has a few really good interviews with him and they are about the most thorough interviews with Maynard you will find. He is an interesting person who really has a lot of irons in the fire. Foor me the interviews sort of demystified him as a performer and you realize here you have a person who's whole life is dedicated to creating in whatever that may be at the time and the older he gets the more he seems to be creating and doing so with as many different people that he can and that to me is what is truly inspirational and exciting about Maynard you just don't know what's next until it smacks you in the face.
