I went through almost the same process trying to implement an external SSD, and ultimately embraced the FP as a 1080p camera. I had the idea for a bracket plate for the SSD, but couldn't find one fine-tailored to the FP until this video! I'll have to check this out.
The struggle is real! My journey has been very similar and I honestly gave up hope until 52 weeks reached out to me. Really glad they did, cause their product is awesome. Let me know how it works out for you if you end up getting one
@@DylColemaneverything came in. The adapter works great, but it has two problems. It doesn’t have a tripod socket on the bottom, so there is no way to mount it on a regular tripod. It does have a built in arca Swiss mount, but it is mounted sideways, so when I mount the camera on my video head that is arca Swiss compatible, the camera points to the side instead of straight ahead. So basically, I have no way to mount it on my tripod. I guess I have to see if I can get some kind of 90 degree arca Swiss adapter, so I can mount the camera on my tripod so it points straight ahead. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not complaining, but I rather have a tripod socket instead of an arca Swiss plate that is pointing the wrong direction. If I was him, I would make the same hard drive housing, but ditch the arca Swiss plate, and put a tripod socket on it. He has the right idea with mounting the hard drive on the bottom, it makes for a nice, low profile setup.

I primarily make use of the SanDisk Pro-Blade and Kondor Blue Pro-Blade Handle. The rig isn't totally complete. I'm still trying to find the right monitor, and I'm also planning on getting the new Lumix 28-200mm Zoom lens.

Nice rig handle is nice . But I end up with the nice rig whole rigging and dpl ssd rack with out put monitor although I did the flip screen convert. To make a better focus when hand held shot.
Funny enough it was the smaller size 2TB NVMe that gave me issues when I used it with the DPL setup I mentioned in the vid. Couldn’t get rid of the cricket-like squeaking noise it produced. But others have said they’ve been happy with that larger capacity smaller NVMe 🤷🏾♂️
You made me laugh))) I shoot on 4TB disks every day and I wouldn't buy such a piece of iron, I think it's a dead end for development for a number of objective reasons. Sorry if this doesn't coincide with your opinion.
That really seems to be the perfect compact rig for my favourite camera. Thank you for sharing! And you could probably mount it inside a bigger rig, if you need a monitor and an external battery. I only wish 52weeks would make that SSD plate for the Silverstone MS12 enclosure, as that performed the best in my tests and 20 Gbit/s helps with offloading speeds. But maybe I could 3d print one. Btw, do you use an ND filter for your rig? On my big Sigma FP rig, I use the Tilta mattebox, but that alone is bigger than your rig. Any recommendations? Or do you just work without one?
Hey there! I do use an ND filter. I use this one from K&F concept - amzn.to/3A4kDFO. I'm also a fan of the Tilta mini matte box, but to try keep this everyday rig small I just use a lens hood whenever possible

I was just trying out this enclosure with a WD SN770 2TB but its write speed dropped too much once it was at 50% capacity to record more than 60 seconds at a time. Just wanted to ask: Are you able to record longer clips with the Samsung 980 PRO all the way to the end of its capacity? And do you have any experience with the 2TB model of that same drive?
Sorry, I don’t. I’ve only been recording short clips with it thus far. Haven’t tried recording a roll with the fp yet. Still use the bmpcc4k for that. No experience with the 2 TB model either 😕
Having that same issue! Not sure which nvme to use to allow it to keep recording the whole time. Thinking about trying the samsung to see, but my only success is with the t7 external drives. The nvmes work but have limited recording.
@@danielsen02 I've got an answer for you! I'm using a WD SN850 and it works flawlessly until 100% full. I think the high end Samsung drives are also sure to work. Any NVME with more than 500MB/s *once the write speed drops* will work. They all slow down once the cache is filled. And you can see these speeds if you search for "Techpowerup Write Intensive Usage." They do good tests for many, not all, drives. If you look up the WD SN850 you'll see on the chart it starts writing at 5,000 MB/s then drops to 1,000 MB/s so it works.
@@danielsen02 I've got an answer! And youtube keeps deleting it for some reason. Basically all NVMEs have a cache that fills up, and then they slow down. You need one that doesn't slow down below 500 MB/s. WD SN850 works, and you can look at tech power up's NVME reviews under the "Write Intensive Usage" section and its chart. The SN850 starts at 5,000 MB/s, then drops to 1,000 MB/s for the remainder of its capacity. Any NVME like this will work, but most are not made for sustained write. I think most of the high-end Samsung drives also work. Just check out their reviews and that one particular chart.
@@danielsen02 RU-vid will not stop deleting my replies, maybe because I'm referring to an outside website even if I'm not linking anything. You need to find "write intensive usage" tests for any particular drive you're curious about. There should be a chart that shows the drive starting off really fast, then dropping dramatically once the cache fills. As long as this lower speed is above 500 MB/s, the drive should work. My WD SN850 starts at 5,000 and drops to 1,000 so I can fill the entire drive with the highest quality the FP can record.
Not sure. I wasn't doing any super long takes when I tested it out in England, but I was able to roll for over a minute without issue. Maybe even a couple at the longest. Will have to do a longer test 🤔
I did some thorough testing on this, although not with that enclosure and drive in particular. The gist is that recording in 4K 12bit 29.97 FPS does not seem to be an issue with most drives and enclosures. For >15 minutes it didn't cause me any problems, I probably tested even for much longer, but I haven't documented that. The real challenge is FHD 12 bit 100 FPS, as that fails on most drives and enclosures just after seconds, but I was able to make even that work for more than 15 minutes. Generally, drives with lower power consumption or gen 3 drives seem to perform much better on this, but the enclosure plays also a huge role. Technically, there should be a record limit around 70 minutes, if I'm not mistaken, but I've made recordings much longer than that, but only in 10 bit, to save drive space. Hope that helps! With the 1/4 20 attachment point I imagine you could mount it somewhere on a cage so that you could fix the fp on the gimbal as well, but I haven't tried. Would be an interesting setup for sure
