A Photographer's Intro to Videography: 4 key differences you need to know!
A common misconception I see is that if you know how to shoot photographs, then shooting high-quality videos will be easy, but that's not really how it works. Videography provides new technical challenges, and photographers can find adjusting to new uses of familiar settings particularly tough.

6:58 One important thing that is often not mentioned, is the inability of most devices to natively show 24 fps. The majority of smartphones, tablets and computers are using fixed 60 Hz screens. 24 fps will not evenly fit into that refresh rate and the device (or service like RU-vid) will add frames to make the footage 30 fps anyway. Some people do not notice or have yet to experience the jitter that this causes. But others will notice it. I certainly do and it looks horrible in panning shots or when something bigger with focus is moving across the scene.

Is this what happens at the drone shot at 1:25? It isn't smooth on my screen.

Sure thing! If you REALLY want to understand how and why the ISO behaves as it does, here's a followup video for you where I took a deep dive into answering everyone's questions about it: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-gisj6Og3xCI.html

Hi Dan, 'wear the fox hat'. Your explanation of dual native iso is really helpful and showing the chart was a brilliant visual tool. For the a1 in s-log 3, the base iso is 800. Gerald Undone says the higher iso is 4000. Other RU-vidrs say double the base iso and multiply by 10 which is 16,000. That seems too high so I'm a little confused there . My worst video mistake - turning the record button off when I'm recording then turning it on when I'm not recording. The Sonys have a big red record box that surrounds the frame. This helps. My worst photo mistake - This is years ago as a wedding photographer. I had a Mamiya 645 with potato masher flash (Metz CT-45) and motor wind. For grab shots during the reception, the flash and aperture would be preset for f8, with the wide angle lens preset for hyperfocal distance focus. At one wedding during dinner, I had the camera ready to go under the table by my feet. I was sitting across from some older ladies. Accidentally, I nudged the shutter button with my foot - there was a poof of white light from under the table, then the sound of the motor wind advancing the film. A week later when I picked up the proofs, you can imagine how the shot turned out. It wasn't pretty. Cheers and thanks for your informative videos.

Hey Braden. Re: your question about S-log3 in your A1. If I had that camera, I'd check it out quickly for ya, but I can't imagine Gerald would have made a mistake on testing that. He's a pretty precise guy and takes pride in providing accurate info. I would almost certainly go with whatever Undone said. I hope my comments about base ISO didn't make it confusing as they only apply to the "original" base ISO. Where the second base ISO kicks in will vary camera to camera. I've seen others report that on the a1, it kicks in at 4,000, too. On my a7SIII it kicks in at 12,800 in s-log 3 and on my a7IV, it kicks in at 3,200. You should be able to see the behavior I showed in my video for yourself, though. Just stick a lens cap on (so you get a totally black image and can only see the noise) and then watch through the evf as you move up through the ISO range. You should see a noticeable change when the camera switches from the lower circuit to the higher.

And I'm over here laughing hysterically at your photo mistake. Oh, the looks you must have gotten! 🤣🤣🤣
@DanFox
@DanFox 2 года назад
Oh, and by the way Photons to Photos is a fantastic resource. He tests the behavior of a bunch of sensors. Looks like he tested the a1. Now, the challenge is that he just tests the raw performance, so you'll only see photography values. But that's where you can apply the "S-log3 is 8 times higher than the photography side" idea. So it looks like he's measured the a1 to have dual ISOs at 100 and 500. If you apply that to S-Log3, that would convert to 800 and 4,000 respectively. Here's the chart where I looked it up: photonstophotos.net/Charts/PDR.htm#Sony%20ILCE-1

@@DanFox Hi Dan, Thanks for outlining the first hand iso demonstration. I tried it and the noise drops immensely at 4,000 then starts climbing again. There's no drop at 16,000. This really clarifies things and will be a core part of my shooting. I appreciate your advice. Best wishes and cheers.

TY TY TY, I always been shooting photos but now I finally switched to mirrorless and trying video without a camcorder LOL. I used my R5 with video setting out of the box ugh it was terrible, guess I been a photographer so long and as you said things don't transfer over to video. Never heard of the 180 rule and didn't know anything about how iso works differently. And you are correct most videos on youtube talk about doing videos but not from a photographer perspective, so thank you very much for helping me understand video. Subbed

I keep meaning to try these out, but never do. The newest versions seem to finally be useful and good enough that they could add some cool storytelling opportunities, but sadly, I just haven't taken the plunge yet. I try to not buy gear anymore unless I'm sure it will enhance something. Philip Bloom made a couple good reviews about them though. He goes in depth about actually using gear, not just regurgitating specs.
