We need a series like this Where a lonely modern town is being visited by historical people or ancient military and iconic leaders will stop to the bar for drink while their men marches in the background

the line "his majesty prefers water" is actually historically accurate, as Charles never drank alcohol except when he was wounded.

@@elliot4013You are very correct in that he did drink in his life. However he didn’t with very little exception (as stated before the wounds) after an incident known as the “Gottorp Fury”, following which he vowed to never drink again and according to what reports exist, he maintained that vow quite well.

You say that but the first thing that the King's men do when they enter the tavern is shoo out all of the women - to my knowledge, that was not a custom of Swedish rulers or a sign of the times. So in conjunction with the comment about the boy sleeping in his tent... It kinda DOES look like they're playing up the whole "Karl XII was gay" angle. Now, I get that this scene is intended to be slightly funny but I can also understand how there would be Swedes out there who would be pretty offended by that implication, even if it is being done with humorous intent. When you mess with people's understanding of their history, you're basically messing with their cherished memories of the past and that can be a very personal insult.

I always wishes to see an apparition of Karl XII of Sweden ( a movie would be better). But in this extract I can see only Karl XII as symbol of snobism. The swedish king had many default but he was a leader loved by the army and people ( until Potlava). Andon what affirmation the director suggest that Karl was gay??? What historical source it s based on? The karoliner uniform stay in despite of this beautiful, the only good point...
@HerrMikael
@HerrMikael 5 лет назад
Good point. Socialist leaning film directors always want to portray national heroes as homosexuals in their revisionist contempt of national heritage and tradition. Karl XII was in many ways a tragic character. He has been seen as an irresponsible warmonger, which isn't fair. He had a strict militaristic upbringing from a young age, but he was not originally the aggressor. He was only 17 or 18, when Denmark, Pomand and Russia declared war simultaneously. He knocked out two of them, but couldn't defeat Russia. He probably never had the time for love, as he spent the most of his adult life in the field
@fizzylavie17
@fizzylavie17 5 лет назад
@@HerrMikael As far as my knowledge goes, after he had been coronated at the age of 15, he was immediately encouraged to find a consort in order to secure the succession. But he decided not to marry right away, and after historians learning that he had a close relationship with one of his pupil who he even said it himself that they were "very pretty", wouldn't it be reasonably natural for there to be accusations of homosexuality?
@HerrMikael
@HerrMikael 5 лет назад
@@fizzylavie17 Not wanting/being able to marry before the age of 18 isn't that strange and certainly isn't a sign of homosexuality. According to written sources, he was quite shy around people. Also, unlike today, it wasn't uncommon back then to describe someone "vacker yngling" without a sexual meaning. Fraternal love (friendship) is much more common than homosexual lust/love. The sexualized way of thinking comes from unhealthy American Puritan influence on our culture. Men used to hug each other without anyone assuming sexual feelings

Good day, dear people. I suppose that absolute monarchy in Sweden and their empire in Baltica were finished due defeated by Russian. At the same time, it indirectly contributed to Charles was killed in Norwegian in 1718. After the series of defeats by Russians he began search luck in a northern front. If the army of Charles didn't defeat in Poltava, he would'nt began war in Norway. And after that Ulrika wouldn't began reforming all political system of Sweden. So the Russian Empire promoted democratisation of Sweden in the 18-th century. There is historical irony that so peaceful and tolerant modern Sweden to seek protection in NATO from so military and aggressive descendants of Peter the Great.

There are some historians claiming that he was homosexual, whether he was we will never know, but what we know that even if he was, he never did sleep with a man, and wouldn't show that in such an obvious way. I know it's a comedy, but I guess, if he was a closeted gay, he still wouldn't wish to be presented in such a way, even if society's look on it has changed. Judging by his character, he'd still be a closeted gay today (if he really was gay, which is very debatable as there's no proof or even contemporary gossip)
