Like his previous features SONGS FROM THE SECOND FLOOR and YOU, THE LIVING, master Swedish director Roy Andersson takes up the theme of “being a human being” with this meticulously crafted, dreamlike black comedy. Sam and Jonathan, a pair of hapless novelty salesman, take us on a kaleidoscopic tour of the human condition in reality and fantasy, unfolding in absurdist episodes: a sing-along at a 1940s beer hall, a randy flamenco teacher, a thirsty King Charles XII of Sweden en route to battle, and a diabolical metaphor for the horrors inflicted by European colonialism. It is a journey that unveils the beauty of single moments, the pettiness of others, life’s grandeur, and the humor and tragedy hidden within us all.

I assume this was in the script but whoever decided to use that stiff noisy plastic bag in this scene, is a genius. The sound it makes in the silence of the room while they fiddle around with it really underlines how uncomfortable and awkward this event is. The way these guys behave while presenting their products makes you feel embarrassed, like you want to be small, silent, get out of there, become unseen - and then the plastic bag comes in the scene breaking the silence in an annoying, revealing way. Maybe i'm weird, maybe i'm reading too much into it and it's not really a thing - but i do like this detail.

I think you're right on the money. These kinds of comedies are all about subtleties and little details.

Oh, this is great! These salesmen should give a seminar to other salespeople. They should share their sales techniques to help others to increase their sales!
