On Teachers' Day at college, I took part in a performance set in a news conference room, where I played the role of a goon who was the right-hand man of an illiterate politician. The play was designed to deliver a powerful social message about the negative consequences of having leaders who lack basic literacy. In our story, the politician's inability to read or write was not just a personal failing but a significant issue that impacted his ability to govern effectively.
Throughout the performance, we showcased various scenes where the politician struggled with basic tasks, made poor decisions, and failed to understand crucial information. My character, as the goon, was there to support and cover up for the politician's shortcomings, highlighting the frustrating and often chaotic consequences of such leadership. The play emphasized how an illiterate leader's ignorance could lead to mismanagement and inefficiency, ultimately affecting the well-being of society.
By using humor and dramatic situations, our performance aimed to engage the audience while driving home the serious point that educated leaders are essential for making informed decisions and guiding society properly. The play served as both an entertaining and thought-provoking way to stress the importance of literacy and the critical role it plays in effective leadership.
