I have a modded, sapphire blue ps vita 1000 with a 1tb micro sd card. I have TONS of games on it and it's great. Literal years of entertainment. Or at least until the battery goes to crap.
Sony (and a few other companies in Japan 🇯🇵) had A LOT of money from the great economic boom in the 90s. This caused a lot of strange phenomena in the business world. Many Japanese companies were so wealthy and so technologically advanced, they would regularly over-engineer their products, essentially making those said products instantly become "ahead of their time". This is why the Toyota Supra can compete with hypercars released last month. And it's why the Vita is still so relevant today. Sony really over-engineered 4 consoles: the PS2, the PSP, the PS3, and the PS Vita. The PS2 has slowly succumbed to time, mostly because of aesthetic choices. But the PSP, PS3, and PS Vita are so well designed that, if you didn't know, it would be easy to think those consoles came out less than a decade ago. Meanwhile the PSP and PS3 have reached two decades and the Vita is over one decade. It's mind-boggling.
I ordered a vita 2000 on ebay a few weeks ago and it should be coming in the next few days and ive been binge watching the reviews because i cant wait lol
@MACCFREESTYLE I would reccomend getting an unmodded one and modding it yourself its really easy but you should also get the sd2vita card Also the wifi still works but if you want to play a game online it might be tricky because there aren't a lot of people who play online anymore Hope this helps :D
It's incredible how it holds up its charge. Left mine suspended with a game open multiple days and the battery percentage was the exact same as I left it.
@@JTSonorouslet me tell you when I found my psp go a month ago it was dead. Ordered a charger for it (ended up finding the charger this last weekend in a random wire box in the basement but the OG charger is way sturdier than this new flaccid one I got so it’s a welcome find lol) I plugged it in and got hit with a wave of nostalgia after letting it charge for 10 minutes. The battery is shit and the I only had an extra 8 gb memory stick on top of its 16 gb internal flash. I’ve modded it almost fully since. All I’m waiting for is a new back shell that’s larger but allows me to install a much larger battery. I currently have a 128 gb SD card installed with an SD card adapter you plug and tuck back into the shell after removing it. Once tucked you just close it up and never have to change the memory card again. I already have a ps classic so I’m staying away from ps1 games but I am using other emulators lol.
I had mines on standby for 2 years due to letting someone I trusted borrow it and they would return it. So the detective checked the pawn shops and found it there. They had to keep it as evidence so when that person go arrested for another crime they would charge them for stealing my vita. For some reason they could arrest them for stealing it then they had to be arrested for another crime, which makes no sense. When I finally got it back, it had the orange blinking light which means it was in ultra power saving mode. I had to charge it for longer, just to get it to turn back on but after that the battery life was just as good as when I had it 2 years prior.
It's a wild take, but depending on the game, it's kinda true. Shovel Knight for instance, Y's 8, persona 4 golden. And almost all Indy games. I myself have reverted back to ps vita for my train ride to work, have sold my Switch Lite. It's all in personal preference
@@NightWatch0997 well truth be told vita has excellent graphics and frame rate but switch has more power. Keep in mind killzone looks fantastic even by today’s standards
You can almost tell each time he got distracted playing the vita while writing the script because each time he got distracted he wrote it into the script and I love that
I own my Vita since 2012 and got it jailbroken around 2020. What a fantastic piece of hardware. I played with it a lot back when I purchased, and around 8 years after, when having access to all the cool stuff, I've been using it pretty much every day since then. Not only it has a huge library of the more official vita, psp and ps1 games, but through homebrew, I played all of the ps2-era gta games, which I'd never do if it wasn't on a portable.
About 5 months late to the party. I'm just like you, I've been on the fence with the Vita for the past 10 years, and now I'm full of non-buyer's remorse. I FOMOed into this cult resurgence 2024 hype for the Vita and managed to snag a 1000 unit from a Japanese online store, since I heard they are "region free". Real excited to get it in, and while I'm waiting, I've been on the hunt all over the internet across Ebay, Amazon, and rando mom/pop shops that offer the hard to find games I enjoy. - Muramasa Rebirth - Odin Sphere - Dragon's Crown - BlazBlue (Continuum and Chrono - Extend) - Dariusburst CS - Gravity Rush - Fast Striker - Super Hydorah - Super Robot Wars X - Killzone Mercenary ...to name a few.
@@rj5485 why not just homebrew your ps vita and get all the games for free? Its made alot easier to the point where you can do it just from the vita itself without the need of a computer.
i always wanted one... a friend had one and i was so incredibly enthusiastic about it. i think i'll buy one and see if i still like it today. the only thing missing are game recommendations
@@GarrettCrespoCheck the error code it throws at you. Depending on what it is the fix might be as simple as your WiFi not allowing a 2.4GHz connection or installing a patch that fixed many WiFi issues on the Vita.
I had a monster movie marathon, watching Godzilla on my vita, 3 movies and played some Sly Cooper until I went to sleep. The battery is really good considering its age.
I have 2 PlayStation Vita 2000 both modded. They were so ahead of their time. I also have 2 PlayStation Portables. Mind boggling how developers keep these things going. I love them!
My black ps vita arrives tomorrow! Can’t wait to try it out. I feel like I missed out on an awesome part of my childhood that could’ve been. After the PSP I only had Nintendo handhelds. Time to catch up as an adult now :D
I picked and purchased a preowned Black PS Vita OLED in Akihabara Tokyo Japan. All good mate! Anyway I still buy games on the Australian PSN still up and running.
Good review. I just got a vita 1000 in really good condition but I only get about 4 hours of playtime on a full charge(playing nfs most wanted.) would get about 4.5 hours but the vita turns off around 12-13% before you need to charge it again. So I’m surprised by your take on the battery life.
Bought a 2000 for about $50 a year ago - good condition except for left-stick drift(still need to replace). Bought a 1000 in even better condition for $65 a few months later, with 7 open box(mostly LEGO) games. What would a NEW Vita look like? This thing is still so good. What would be the new Vita's target?
I’d think a new vita would aim for PS3 and PS4 era graphics. The Steam Deck and ROG Ally have shown that portable gaming can look as good as last gen consoles and even play current gen games. So, something like that with PS branding, I assume.
You can still purchase from the store, you just need to add funds via the PS app or your PS5, for supposedly doing research, it’s a neglected point in your review. Sony hasn’t made any overtures to close the store recently (outside the original attempt that was met with vocal resistance), I just purchased several games recently via the method I mentioned above. There’s no doubt that it will in the future probably close, but as of this posting it’s still up and running as usual. You just have to add funds in a backwards way via your own PlayStation 4/5 or your PS account via website or app.
Interesting. I'll have to try again. My issue wasn't really adding funds. The store just wouldn't open for me. I'm wondering if maybe it's an issue with the Vita talking to my network.
@@GarrettCrespo you mentioned yours had issues with the speaker, it could also very well have an issue with the WiFi card. I can’t recall if the vita 2001 had a separate WiFi card or if it was integrated. Cause if you can load/install updates, it might just be something on your vitas end. Idk if also hacking it can cause issues or not, mostly likely it shouldn’t have caused any issues.
Well for logging in to psn you do need to make a separate password for ps3/psp/psvita. There's a option in the security section of the account setting in the website, then you use the normal one for confirming purchases. Check logging in from the setting.
Yeah - I love my Vita - have had it since Launch (..even pre-ordered it and dreamed about it ahead of its release). Modding it now is so easy too. I was able to get into the PS Store with it though I didn't do much shopping there - just grabbed a few themes. Right now I do tend to grab my 3DS more due to the library but I absolutely love my Vita too. Tales of Hearts R is awesome on Vita!
From someone who’s never cared to repair something. My ps4 changed that. On top of that it was a refurbished ps4 pro from … GameStop. It was rough for the first week until I got it cleaned and it hasn’t piped up since.
Hadn't used my launch Vita in many years until watched the GTA6 trailer and saw a video in my recommendations about GTA San Andreas on the Vita. So I modded it like 6 months and have since then played mostly on my Vita while the Ps5 waits for the Elden Ring DLC. So far I replayed San Andreas, GTA 3 and Vice City, Jak&Daxter and Sly Cooper Collections, Burnout Legends, SSX On Tour, Tony Hawks Underground 2 Remix, both PSP Wipeouts (can be played in native Vita res now!), Midnight Club, Mario 64 Port (native res and 60FPS!), and some Rayman Legends. There are some of the best ever Jump'nRuns and racing games available on the Vita. Its definitely is a bit of a hassle to get it all running and some community ports don't have stable performance, but I honestly currently prefer playing on this little thing because its sleek, is very portable, has good buttons, amazing battery life and it offers an amazing library of games, many of which I haven't played since childhood and many gems I had missed. I am currently replaying Pokemon Emerald, lol.
Don’t forget about liberty city stories and vice city stories. There’s a patch that makes the 2nd stick worth for camera and a 4x resolution boost. VCS is incredibe
Love my modded vita. From RetroArch to Adrenaline to my favorite movies backed up and music. Even with my ROG Ally - I find myself constantly going back to my vita. Just throw it in my pocket and I'm good to go.
You could also play essentialy the entire PSP library and most PS1 games + a fair amount of high quality community ports like the PS2 GTA games. And all that for a small size, unlike the switch which i personally rarely consider taking anywhere because of its size.
Can confirm the idle battery life is amazing, I leave the vita (2000), 3ds xl and steam deck oled on and at my desk always. The 3ds definitely lasts the longest but the vita will still last a couple weeks in sleep mode its nice being able to just pick up and play whenever I feel like it
I've not touched it a bit but I have my basically launch OG OLED Vita! I love(d) it! Gravity Rush was a launch title and I played it to DEATH. Drill kicking those monsters in the air is so satisfying! haha. I have both GR Remastered and GR2 on my PS4.. I need to play GR (Remastered) all the way through again before I restart my playthrough of GR2, of which I got on by bday back in 2016. Also, the back touch panel was used in Hatsune Miku Project Diva F in one of the mini games. You can literally poke Miku and she reacts lol. Great content as always!
you mentioned the battery life being pretty good and the vita is 10+ years old now so is there a way to put a newer more modern battery in the vita and get even better battery performance?
The Slim provides the best battery life without any modifications. Although if you’re interested in other options there are mods which allow you to install a Galaxy Note battery inside a Vita which does drastically improve battery life, but doesn’t exactly work flawlessly. The system isn’t able to detect the higher capacity so the charge percentage on the system gets a bit confused and could randomly turn off even with a decent amount of charge left in the system. Although inserting a charger will correct the problem and let you keep chugging with your Vita.
PS Vita Slim is the best portable gaming handheld. It is lightweight, the buttons are great, the battery backup is good, and the suspend feature is the highlight for me. Switch Lite comes second.
1:38 this is the case with almost all second iteration "slim" consoles. Even different SKUs after launch of the PS5 has cut backs on the cooling system. Same thing the 3ds vs 3ds XL or more obviously the 2ds. they were both cheaper production. It's a shame the Vita was overshadowed by the hype around phone games at the time and hamstrung by it's poor choice of proprietary memory.
Slightly unrelated, but I’ve noticed the Vita and PS5 are kinda similar in that they both are very powerful consoles but with barely any games of their own throughout their entire lifespans lol
i do love my vita!!! if it wasn't for those weird touch pads on the back 😭 they trigger something in my brain and something about the texture they used on it just makes my brain screech it's like if nails on a chalkboard was a physical feeling 😭😭 i do get that that's just a me thing tho 😭 its like sharpies on cardboard i just aAA i can't 😭😭😭
I'm having Vita withdrawals . I loved mine when I had one but ultimately ended up selling it due to Sony's failure to support it. I've been impulse bidding on random Vitas on eBay, but of course I lose. I guess I''ll just have to pay full price 🤷🏿♂
Ha, no. The proprietary stuff was certainly no novelty back then, it's probably the biggest reason the Vita didn't succeed. Back then the micro SD card was a must for phones, and the Vita didn't support it but its most notable competitor, the 3DS, did. SD cards were cheap and widely available so you could just fill one up and swap to another and have plenty of storage, and the Vita proprietary cards were the price of a game at their cheapest option, and over a hundred dollars for their max at 64GB. Go figure. I loved the Vita from day one, but I could not recommend it in good conscience back in the day. Nowadays, thanks to the community, it's an easy recommend; which yeah, it's crazy that it still hits where it needs to, well after a decade.
have you used any of the emulators on the system? if so, what are your opinions on it? (that goes for the native PS1 and PSP emulator also!) i was the graphic designer for the N64 and Dreamcast homebrew emulators for the system, so i would have loved to hear what you think about the vita's immensely expanded library with emulation
I have two Vitas... one is stock that I won't mod... and the other one is modded with a 512GB card in it stuffed with games and emulators galore. That little device is my friend when I want to waste time on games... and a ton of what I play on it aren't even Playstation titles! lol It's amazing if you like playing some old-school systems. I still use my Vita daily... I can only pray we get a Vita 2 from Sony.
@@KabukiKid I did the same. One is stock that I actually bought games for. The other is getting all the mod work. I may need to get another sd card just to back up everything tho
So the shop didn’t work for you but I did just buy gravityrush cuz it’s cheaper than a physical copy but yeah for me it works fine I’m from the Netherlands so maybe because of the different regions we got opposite results with the shop
I broke the screen on the wall of old house in my work place I hope fix the screen just needs a new lcd screen inside it I well I don't really don't how to change the screen inside not jokeing I got old psp console 🙃
Note: People think the battery is no longer good when it is stuck on orange blinking light and doesnt seem to come one when plug to charger. There actually isnt anything wrong with the battery. You just have to leave it charge longer for it to cut on and start charging like normal again. The orange light just means it is in ultra power saving mode due to being in standby for so long. I had mines in standby for 2 years because I let someone I trusted borrow it and they put it in pawn shop. Detective had to go get it from pawn shop and it was at the police office as evidence until they could first catch the person for another crime and then charge them with stealing my device and not returning it. Smh
I had the 2000 my friend gave me the 1000 but with no charger and like the battery life in 3 minutes literally and the screens damaged cause sone games to only move 1 directions sooooo Need .new screen .new battery Already got the charger And it dont wanna connect to the ps vita network soooo 😵💫
I had the vita when it first came out. I thought it was awesome. Butt the games they had it were not my type of games. They only had alot of anime games. When i was looking for something more american type. Im 29 now, and i found my vita today all dusty and dirty. I plan on buying a charger today and giving it to my son.
I think it came out 1 year earlier. Personally I think once it was perfected the 3D effect was special. Still blows me away. And it was a decently powerful machine. But the vita was just Sony pouring the most cutting edge tech they had into a device that size. It was like the only device with an OLED on the market for years as far as I remember
As far as piracy goes, I'm pretty much in agreement. Also, if it's a case where the console isn't dead, but the game is no longer being made, and as a bonus the developer that made the game no longer exists, then yeah pirating it may be acceptable, especially as it'll be another case of someone's selling it for a ridiculous price. But, one thing to be aware of for if you pirate games is the game itself may have an anti-piracy feature. For Command & Conquer Generals (and maybe others), your base blows up after a minute or two of playing. For Black & White 2, your villagers do not age, which doesn't sound like a bad thing, until you realize that because nobody ages, children never become adults and therefore, they never get to work. So you could have 50 working adults and 500 children wandering around. And say goodbye to most of your plans of an evil run because you likely will not have enough people to keep making armies for that evil run. Anyway, in some cases, piracy is just about as difficult as getting the game legally. Like for a PS2 game, sure, you could try to pirate it to play for free, but most PS2 emulators require you to have the actual game. Some require you to have the actual console for some reason, which to me kinda defeats the point of the emulator. And another case where piracy may be acceptable, though this is a bit of an extension to Garrett's point, is if you already bought the physical copies of the game for a dead console, that console no longer works, and the physical copies don't fit into your computer. I'm talking about the PSP. My actual PSP doesn't work like it used to. I have two games for it and they do not fit into any disc tray that I'm aware of for PC. And my only option left to play them is through an emulator.
