Liv Boeree was a top ranked poker player and won more than $4 million on the international circuit. A self-professed nerd with a degree in astrophysics, she now has her own RU-vid channel making films about game theory, complexity, physics and more.
In this conversation with Rebel Wisdom's Alexander Beiner, she explains why game theory is such a useful tool for making sense of culture, how her time playing poker changed her attitude to intuition, and how an ancient Canaanite deity called Moloch can help us understand existential risk and zero-sum games.
Liv is one of the speakers at our free event on September 25 & 26: The State of Sensemaking. Learn more and sign up on www.rebelwisdom.co.uk/state-o...

Having practised Zen meditation for 25 years I would say pick whichever of the mystical traditions that inspires you to practice and then follow it all the way to the end. "Many paths lead from the foot of the mountain, but at the peak, we all gaze at the single bright moon." - Zen Master Ikkyu.

If you want to fix the audio phase issues between mics and cut down on editing time, swap those lavs out (I'm guessing they're omni) for cardioid, or try super/hyper-cardioid condensers, or even shotguns just out of frame. The shots are tight enough that you could have a mic for each person just above their head. Great interview and great job navigating the phase issues. It's barely noticeable most of the time. Aloha!

Kind of a long-winded way to say they're all about repression. In my day the injunction was to avoid sin and the near occasion of sin. That's black and white, clockwork thinking. Whether by design or not, they discourage novelty, innovation, and joy, so the people have left.
@jamesdewane1642
@jamesdewane1642 2 года назад
And they excuse their own mistakes by referring to the nobility of their mission, which is condescension. My eighty-something mom remarks from time to time about the low quality of the new priests. Imho Catholics are not attracting any talent. These days nobody looks to the church for guidance. It is dead in its traditions.
@Werdna27
@Werdna27 2 года назад
Even if what you are talking about is guidance through the mythos provided by the Church, the approach to mythos in the Catholic Church does not effect what Ancient Greeks did with myth: there, they actually amplified the dilemma of decision using myth, so that decision became inevitable, in the Criterion. Neurosis and suffering seem to come from indecision in this worldview. The Catholic Church don't want decision makers, nor, by extension wisdom in it's subjects - they only want disciples to its creed, which is not wisdom gleaned from the lived experience of its subjects.

I've liked an explanation of game theory optimal play vs imperfect play being sub-optimal that Liv has described in a different interview. If you're playing "Rock-Paper-Scissors", the GTO strategy is complete randomness - roll a d6, and play rock with 1-2, paper with 3-4, scissors with 5-6. But if you're playing someone who is completely predictable (like, always playing rock, or cycling through rock, then paper, then scissors in turn) your GTO will win 33% of the time, draw 33% of the time, and tie 33% of the time - but you can do a lot better by anticipating your opponent's move.
@haraldwolte3745

there's something missing in this discussion of game theory. What's missing is an understanding of desire. Our "games" are driven by the desires of the participants. Our desires are not just rational choices. Our desires are mimicked from others. Once you understand that, you can see how shared desires lead to inevitable conflict over scarce resources. And then, according to Rene Girard, to the scapegoating and sacrifice of a person to let off the steam of the community in conflict. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-LSzF2OG2ejI.html

When we coming ro entropy, and complexity, you can distinguish a dynamics of information processing of humans un general. From birth, we try to soak up as much information as fast possible, but with time we try to reduce complexity by simplify information. So while everything approaches equilibrium, we fight against it in all sense. With time you more aware the importance of efficiency, calculate and use your energy to move in space or make any effort necessary to survive. So effectively being wiser and more mature is a process where you appreciate low energy state

Sophia, in Gnosticism, is not an Earth Goddess as Alexander was making out, she's an Aeon. The Aeons are emanations of the creator God, and come in pairs (one male, one female) called Syzergies. These Syzergies descend hierarchically from the creator God and are only allowed to reproduce with their partner when given permission from God. Sophia transgressed this law by giving birth herself, without her male partner and without permission from above - essentially a virgin birth. The result of this transgression is the Demiurge, a lower/lesser reflection of the creator God, who went on to create the material world.

Competition could be seen as a form of differentiation while cooperation could be linkage. Complex systems need to walk a tightrope between the two (both must be equally valued, neither blocked) to allow the system to flourish. Which it should on its own given such conditions.

It's not like he said. I made a comment above which I'll repeat here for you, Jennifer: 'Sophia, in Gnosticism, is not an Earth Goddess as Alexander was making out, she's an Aeon. The Aeons are emanations of the creator God, and come in pairs (one male, one female) called Syzergies. These Syzergies descend hierarchically from the creator God and are only allowed to reproduce with their partner when given permission from God. The result of this transgression is the Demiurge, a lower/lesser reflection of the creator God, who went on to create the material world.' To Gnostics, the Old Testament god is the Demiurge which I mentioned above, although they don't call him Yahweh. The Logos (Word) of the New Testament (basically Jesus) came down to teach us this truth. You can read about this in the Nag Hammadi Scriptures, or just have a search online.

1:04:40 It's not so much about externalities as about the difference between infinite and non-infinite games. It may have been game theory optimal to be selfish and take the money, but as Liv has seen there have been consequences through out her life. It would have been better to split the money and then even if you lose people will have sympathy for you. There is actually a strategy that has to my mind never bettered in game theory which is roughly 'co-operate until somebody betrays you, then never co-operate with that persona gain unless they first co-operate with you', and that can serve you very well.

I absolutely hate the idea of having a religion, but I have a feeling the world "religion" popped up here by default, a bit like the word tolerance replaces empathy in many cases. What we lost with religion, and had with it, is the sense of inherent purpose in existence, and actually being a part of a whole of some kind. At this point most of us feel like we're stranded in vacuum of space except that space is our mind. Nothing that happens in our interaction with the environment has organic structure anymore, everything is mechanistic and inorganic (in a sense that its natural complex structures are overridden by techno-bureaucracy. But on top of that loss of faith (not religion) gives us this useless feeling of nihilism because we want things to matter inherently. But everything matters in complexity, the thing is we as individuals don't matter as much as our egos want us to matter. But as a pack of disorganised mammals we're destroying the planet. Awesome scenario - personal impotence to stop the extinction and collective downfall into it :D

Einstein says, “No problem can be solved from the same consciousness that created it.” So this lady or rebel wisdom, which is a clever name, because just by naming your group wisdom doesn’t mean that you have wisdom, or all these so called sense making experts are swimming in the same field of conditioned consciousness, so their is no way humanity can survive this madness that man has created, all these activities and solutions are generated from the same ground that crisis of humanity is manifested, so any solution that human mind has come up with, has become a greater problem, especially in psychological field, social media is the product of conditioned mind, all human activity has self-interest behind it, that’s what we corrupt everything we touch. But at least you are trying to understand why we are in such a crisis, your trying has become a game, because the ‘SELF’ is running the show and you think that you are in control, which is the source of our conflict and madness, well keep playing this game maybe your true‘intuition’ shows up. After listening to this conversation over 40 minutes, what came to my mind was, tradition damages human mind, now I see what a really damaged brains sounds like, as more information accumulated in the brain, it’s complexity increases exponentially, therefore it’s ignorance and it’s limitation, I don’t know how such a minds have a little space of attention to connect to life, people think through knowledge they can get to solve human problems, and get to enlightenment also, what a mental trip, they don’t see the damage religions have done to human mind, now they want another one, so more modern religions to be invented, I feel that this conversation is so mechanical that’s like two robots are talking, is this what’s sense making looks like, I can go on, but last word, you have to reach complexity with simplicity, but these two brains don’t know what is simplicity. This is a show off of knowledge of two egos who are drunk with Self show off, is this what you call enquirers? We are doomed if these are the people who are telling rest of us how to make sense of this confused world, saving world is not issue or a goal, it’s minds clever way for fame and wealth. What a insight this guy just said, “ego disconnected from self” if this is not madness I don’t know what is, pure ignorance of human conditioned mind.

Liv said she doesn't like traditional religious rules, but how does she know those aren't the rules optimised after thousands of years of trials? Out experiment in promiscuity since the 1960s has only lead to broken hearts and broken families. Choosing a religion that satisfies all your whims is self evidently a Terrible idea no different to a diet of chocolate.

I think there is some truth in what you say. Culture tends to be shaped by technology though, hard to imagine that contraceptives wouldn't change monogany. I dont know what the answer is but i agree, a life chasing your every desire is disasterous and unfulfilling.

The precepts in Buddhism actually describe how a fully enlightened being behaves. To a Buddha, there are no precepts. Acting against the precepts leads to suffering. However, it can take a long time to realise this and a lot of us have to learn about karma the hard way.
@haraldwolte3745
@haraldwolte3745 2 года назад
@@peterhardie4151 good point. Technology is a shield, a barrier, a "garment of skin" between us and reality. Almost literally in the case of some contraception. But technology has many unintended and unwanted consequences. One is the loss of meaning and purpose in what we do. We have sex because it feels good, not to generate life. We eat chips because they taste good, not for their nutrition. We lift weights to look good, not to build. Our lives are one big LARP and then we wonder why we have no meaning and purpose.

I can’t’ get past this dude’s hair. It looks like he put axle grease on what’s left of it with a roofing trowel, knocked his teeth around with it, and tied off the leakage in the back of his head with that tiny pony bun before striding confidently into a place where he knew he’d be filmed and possibly seen by dozens of others.

Might be the thinkers effect here, those who spend a lot of time musing on the this or the that, can avoid the need to visually impress.
@jimj9040
@jimj9040 2 года назад
@@miketomlin6040 I’d consider it the opposite. The whole idea is to visually impress a certain subsection of the population. It’s a cue to others of the same imagined ilk, like pink hair, tattoos, nose rings, biker or goth gear. It has nothing to do with being true to one’s self. It’s conformity in its most pathetic manifestation. It’s like customizing your character in a video game and thinking it looks cool instead of totally dorkish. It isn’t about Not caring, it’s about caring so much about how you look that you choose to risk that a single match will set you and everyone else around you on fire. If you didn’t care, you wouldn’t bother to put the effort in to look like that.

@@jimj9040 The look he has reminds me of Engineering students circa 1976, the not interested in style or appearance psyche. Usually due to a lack of beauty in the face, so what's the point! Liv is similar here, or her disinterested choice of clothing, hair style, etc. Neither look ''cool'' or seem interested in being ''cool''. You could call it a conformity of sorts, here a conformity to the notion appearance is an irrelevance.
@jimj9040
@jimj9040 2 года назад
@@miketomlin6040 it astounds me that you can’t see this as an intentional look in every facet. The woman didn’t stand out in any respect. He represented himself as he probably does every day. He wants to attract others with hippy intellectual vibes and presents himself in exactly that manner. He surrounds himself with others of the same kind and therefore is seldom if ever mocked. You can only get away with that look within a small community of people who will accept you. That becomes your world, and you end up running around proudly looking like an idiot. I would call attention to the pretentious guy in the bar in “ Good Will Hunting”. This is how this dude comes off,and is proud to be so. Unoriginal, and bad amalgamation of others ideas.

@@jimj9040 We probably share little cross cultural empathy here. In the UK the male and female's look here or image would be seen as dull, distinctly non -'hippy' and may well attract a fair smattering of mockery due their bland generic appearances.
