Followers of the clinical psychologist and now world-famous member of the ‘Intellectual Dark Web’, Jordan Peterson, have noted a radical change in his video style in recent weeks. For David Fuller, founder of Rebel Wisdom, these videos ‘signalled a watershed moment’ for Peterson, from truth-seeker and mediator between Left and Right to a blinkered tribalist. UnHerd’s Freddie Sayers sat down in the studio with Fuller to dig a little deeper into his reservations about Jordan Peterson and alternative media’s part in this story.

The problem with Fuller's position is that he is acting like the left of today are the left of years or decades ago. Peterson is reacting to the absolutely insane, vitriolic, deranged and oppressive state of today's left. So why would his discourse with and about them be the same as it was in more gentle times? Peterson's counterpoints to the left are a proportionate reaction to the great Orwellian danger they have become. Nice try Fuller but your attempt to cling to the centre, oblivious or not caring how far left the centre has moved doesn't wash. The value of being a centrist was in what values it represented at any given time, not the virtue of being a centrist for it's own, expedient sake.

I like what you said. The whole political landscape has been infiltrated and subverted, by radicals on all sides. Petersen's arguments may have political ramifications, but they aren't inherently political, in any Left versus Right framing. He's concerned with ethics and how a morally unimpeachable human being should act in this world.

@Hannu ...... I agree totally with you. People are either drugged pharmaceutically, asleep or indifferent so they don't feel the outrage when they perceive injustice. Suddenly this reminds me of the Film "Network" 1976. It was a great success. There was a line in the film which became a mantra for a time. I never forgot it. Sadly aside from a few of us everyone returned to the status quo. The line was "I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take it any more". It was a great scene. The more the character (Peter Finch) said the line on his tele show all over the city people began screaming out of their windows that same line. Alas, cinema did not become reality although it was even needed back then. We need a majority to wake up and join voices and intentions and of that I am unfortunately pessimistic.

Very much appreciate Fuller coming out with this, it can’t have been easy. He’s probably alienating himself from a fair portion of his audience shared with Jordan, as well as the audience on this channel. I’ve followed a very similar trajectory, being a huge proponent of Jordan’s for several years, still appreciating elements of his work (namely on Christianity, personality, mythology, meaning, Jung), but now noticing this shift which I find concerning and less aligned with me. I don’t have all the answers, but it’s refreshing to hear this, thank you David.

17:08 David hits the nail on the head here. JBP literally turned me from a woke, angry young woman who believed in the patriarchy to a reasonable, more centred person with empathy for conservatives. He did this through his debate on the gender pay gap. At first I was so offended by him, but he won me over with reason. He was calm, stoic, to the point. I couldn’t argue with him. He was right. I just had to accept it. Accepting that truth allowed me to accept a number of other uncomfortable truths about life and human nature. I wonder if the same would have happened if Jordan conducted himself the way he conducts himself now. This is true, but also a bit of memory holing is going on here. He was plenty angry in some of his older videos. They were also accompanied by way more videos and interviews where he was calm and collected. But his anger showed at times, in certain areas. Never really out of place either. And while I understand why people are seeing him slightly differently now, I'd like to remind them that they are really only focusing on one tweet and one video. He had a conversation with Kyle Kulinski after that video, where he comes off way more calm and reasonable about that situation. And he's also not reacting to a 2017 and 2018 world anymore. A world where he was warning about authoritarianism and the left "going too far." Jordan is now reacting to 3 years of authoritarian overreach and the woke left gaining the most cultural power that they've ever had. He's seeing all of his warnings come to fruition. The man is allowed to raise his voice in one video. I think a lot of people are overreacting and forgetting a few of his older videos where he had plenty of strong stances and tempered anger displayed.

What I'm hearing here is two non-Canadians discussing why the rhetoric and content of a Canadian has changed so drastically in the last few years, all while they largely ignore the situation in Canada that might have caused this drastic shift. Look, I get it. Canada on the global stage is the political equivalent of the change you lose in your couch cushions and forget about, but come on. You can't talk about the Peterson changes without seriously understanding the changes in Canada- especially over the last two years. Canada is heading towards a bad place, and for a man like Peterson, who I believe truly loves his country, this is an absolutely unconscionable and unacceptable state of affairs. The lockdowns and mandates of the last two years - the actions of the Trudeau government, more broadly speaking - have forced a sort of tipping point in the minds of many socially and politically aware moderates - such as Peterson himself. If the compelled speech of progressivism in 2016's Bill C-16 was the social equivalent of water being slowly boiled to cook a frog, then the last two years in Canada have been the equivalent of tossing the proverbial frog straight into the deep fryer. I would love nothing more than for Peterson to go back to giving lectures on Jungian thought, but unfortunately, here in Canada, we have a severe lack of sizable, well-spoken voices willing, and able, to call attention to the malignant (or just plain incompetent) cancer that's been eating this country from the inside outside.

@@kburns2470 yeah I totally agree with you and it's frightening what's happening in Canada. I'm Scottish and its horrifying what's happening in my country too. Our SNP government has introduced new guidelines in schools where children as young as 4 are asked to decide what they want their gender to be and are then free to use whichever toilets, changing facilities they choose etc regardless of how other children feel about it. The really sinister thing is that school teachers and staff are under no obligation to inform the child's parents about anything and in some cases reported they were actively encouraged to prevent parents from finding out! New legislation here also requires police, nurses, doctors and other medical staff to treat every person according to their chosen gender despite any dangers that may arise from doing so! The new hate speech legislation here is ambiguous at best. It doesn't clearly define what exactly constitutes as hate speech or who is responsible for making that definition and what guidelines they'd follow to do so. There are many examples where a person can simply decide if something said to them is hate speech or not!!! It's utterly horrifying! The Scottish government state that they are the most progressive in Europe? They, along with so so many more people ( mostly leftist, woke, young, activist types ) seem to be confused and think that change automatically equals progress! This is simply not always the case!

@@graemejack9040 yes, we are on a similar trajectory here in Canada with regards to gender ideology. I've been worried about and debating people about that since I think around 2016 or so, the concerns around that for women and children specifically, though it affects everyone. The totalitarianism was evident then, too, but it ramped up significantly with the response to Covid. We just want our normal lives back, our human rights back. No mandates, no coercion, no bullying, no censorship and silencing. He openly admits he can do that, cant we all when pushed enough. Weather he has gone to far yet I'm not sure, but I do have reservations like David. In the last few weeks in particular, I have started to think he is beginning to get more pointed, bordering on aggressive with his language & demeanour. Most noticeable examples of that are his recent appearances in the Daily Wire, which he has now joined forces with. Personally I think that will end up being a mistake, I don't think he needed to do that, he was doing just fine using his finely tuned linguistic skills and academic background. I prefer the Jordan who holds a deep & meaningful conversation, whilst remaining composed and winning his position through dialogue, not drama. The Daily wire with it's Black & White background and camera angles to portray Jordan as man not to be messed with (bit like the men in black :) ), accompanied by synchronised short bursts of music as it zooms in, followed by Jordans short very to the point message about physicians butchering our kids in the name of compassion for those who feel born in the wrong body, is really not helpful at all, even if he has a point. Shock tactics can be very effective I know, but I just don't like that style of discourse. He doesn't need to do that. That said, I continue to follow him with admiration and never tire of his conversations, but silently hope he doesn't go down the Rabbit hole of toxic words designed to sow the seeds of division, to avoid that, he would do well to note how Jesus spoke, whose words and meanings behind them were clear, truth and wisdom without reverting to emotionally charged language and pointing fingers.

And generalized anxiety, for which JP took Clonazepam, is indicative of repressed/suppressed other emotions, such as anger and sadness. The Clonazepam created, for a time, a more peaceful JP. Coming off that drug is brutal, if it doesn't kill you, and, the feelings that were present but unconscious come roaring back. JP is a smart and insightful man, but one cannot think their way out of feelings, effectively. Feelings are in the body, and JP, like many intellectuals, adapted by living there. It is an adaptation made early. I don't know what he's now taking, but you can be assured that as he "angers", and manages to do so without saying/doing anything too harmful to himself or others, his anxiety will lessen, and his ability to manage (which in our crazy culture(s) looks like a poker face) his anger, which for me has always been "right there", will noticeably lessen. I agree that not mentioning this is unfair. In all honesty, if I hadn't the experience, and thus researched "getting off Clonazepam", and read the horrors, and learned of what it does to the GABA system, the long-term effects, I'd have thought it an "excuse." Another walk in another's shoes should be teaching this slow soul, that we just don't know what's happened to, what's happening with another without getting to know them, and perhaps finding the commonalities to enhance compassion and perhaps empathy. Exactly. As far as I know, Malone and McCullough would be happy to be debated by people with opposing viewpoints, but none of them will. The fault is with (i) those people who refuse to debate, and (ii) those media who don't challenge the "official" point of view. Science is not a body of knowledge, but a process of weeding out wrong claims, and it can only happen when those claims are allowed to be challenged. I wasn't impressed at all by Fuller in this interview. I think the only valid point that he made was that alternative media need to be prepared to challenge their audiences' beliefs. What he forgot to mention is that traditional media need to do the same, and that part of the popularity of alternative media _is_ the challenge of considering alternative perspectives and assessing their strengths and weaknesses. Joe Rogan, in particular, thoroughly explores his guests' claims, and he does challenge them (for example, picking up McCullough on his claim that you can't get Covid twice). Jordan Peterson has pointed out that his approach is fundamentally truthful, and is what makes him so popular. Follow Ideas Not Men: ★ If a person had done an extra ordinary achievement and helped most of the people , we come to a conclusion that he is good and we can follow whatever he says. ★ This is the Cognitive bias - a systematic error in thinking. ★ We think that a sample taken from a enormous quantity is same as that of others surrounding that sample. ★ This is the problem of sampling. eg : a kind of thought that a sample of rice taken from a rice bag is same as that of the other rice samples present in that same bag. But the truth is that all the rice samples in the bag may not same. ★ When we realize that the person whom we followed had done a bad thing ; we would get struck into the halo effect. ★ Halo effect is the tendency to judge a person based on a previously formed favorable or unfavorable impression. ★ At this point we would come to a cognitive bias that whatever good things he had contributed to the society is meaningless and his achievements are meaningless. ★ The identity of that person makes us blind from observing his good thoughts and ideas. Here that person is not the loser but we are the losers. ★ The solution is Don’t Worship Men if you like their ideas . Peterson has put himself under immense societal pressure by putting himself out there as an expert in too many diverse areas outside of his scholarship and making so many bullshit statements. There are so many wiser, more honest, more learned intellects for people to listen to on YOUTube. Intellects who speak from their actual area of expertise rather than going off on arrogant tangents like Peterson. i.e. The cringe-worthy pontifications and ludicrous positions posited by Jordan B. Peterson: He strongly implied that women wearing makeup in the workplace invite sexual harassment. He was called out on this so many times, he had to waffle walk it back. Rules concerning men arguing with men verses men arguing with “crazy women” are unfair because men can't hit women. An essay in which he stated hating Muslim people wasn't a bad thing because all Muslims are violent extremists. His lie that every country with a Muslim government gives the death penalty for blasphemy. His completely ridiculous statement that ancient people knew all about DNA and that the medical symbol of the intertwined snakes is proof of that. Corporal punishment should be used to discipline children-even two-year-olds. (Rule 5) If he'd bothered to do any research on this, he'd have learned that studies concerning corporeal punishment showed that even spanking has long term negative effects on children. Exhausted fanboy parents are going to see this as Peterson's stamp of approval and spank or hit their children much more readily. His statement that he believes medicine kills more people than it saves. Irresponsible because there are gullible followers who may not seek medical intervention when they need it. His dream about his Granny's pubic hair in the book Maps of Meaning. WHAT THE FOOK WAS THAT ALL ABOUT. His twitter comment in which he presented himself as an authority on objective standards of beauty for women (and then quit twitter because someone had the gall to call him on it.) His dishonesty and waffling about when he was asked if he believed in Christ/was a Christian. His hypocrisy concerning his own 12 Rules. When life gets hard, take Benzos. His very uneducated stance on climate change. (How arrogant. That's not his area of expertise.) His statement on a BBC channel that racism was not a structural problem in society His statement that there are no reliable chemical means to stop smoking he says, and then immediately brings up the use of magic mushrooms. His deliberate misrepresentation of Bill C-16. He out and out lied about the content/purpose of that bill just to get another 15 minutes of fame. What a despicable man. His arrogance at retranslating the meaning of various Bible stories as though he has a direct line to God--or as though he is God. Next thing he'll do is write a third testament. Wonder what he'll call it. His latest claim is that Putin is attacking Ukraine because he doesn't want the degenerate ideas of the west to infiltrate his country. Yeah, sure, like Putin stands on such high moral ground killing all those civilians with many children among them. Not a complete list of Peterson bullshit by any means. Sorry I just can't respect the arrogance of someone who presents himself as an expert in disciplines for which he has no scholarship-climatology, theology, nutrition, pharmacology, economics,

Freddie nails it; (paraphrasing) why bring a mainstream narrative (which we all know) into alternative media? In essence it exists to challenge.
@GGTutor1
@GGTutor1 Год назад
Not only that, but the mainstream has done this for decades. Put two opposing views on that seem to represent both sides for the viewer to make an informed decision. This is, of course, not what happens nor is it their real intent. They just want to frame the debate and will not allow views that they want promoted to actually be challenged. Any genuine challenge to the orthodox view will never be shown, this is the very reason that alternative media arose. I would far rather have a single view be fully developed and argued and then I can find the opposing view myself. The responsibility of a citizen is to make their own informed decision and to seek out diverse views and sources of information to do that. Fuller is not advocating that, he wants to frame the debate, just as the MSM that he came from does.

@philsandele
@philsandele Год назад
Agreed. Nevertheless, it would be interesting to hear both views at the same time. The exchange, the conflict even, of ideas is what is so interesting. Maybe that is what Fuller is alluding to. This requires a format where there is enough time for the arguments and counter arguments of both side to be developed. Because of the time limits in MSM, you never get such in depth, prolonged exchanges. But neither will you get this in alternative media, when only one view point is presented at a time.

I agree that JP is now leaning toward one side. However, that does not mean he is egging on the civil war. You have to make that exact comment on all the people in the main stream media who are extremely devisive and totalitarian. Furthermore, I do not agree on David Fuller's comment on giving voice to the people who had opposite opinion of main stream media's covid narrative. In fact, the main stream media shut down the discussion so much so that Joe Rogen's attempt to bring discussion back on the table was absolutely necessary.

There is a time for balance, discussion, or debate, but there is also a time for action and war. Refusal to pick a side in times of great need is a sign of weakness. Times are changing, and when you cannot persuade people or when it is counterintuitive, you need to strengthen the position of your own side. David is a blind, weak, and delusional man. Jordan has woken up from the delusion. "Are the worst enemies of society those who attack it or those who do not even give themselves the trouble of defending it?" - Gustave Le Bon "Take sides! When a society is facing a defining moment that threatens logic, language, freedom of speech and tought, it's very difficult to be balanced. JP is not right-wing, yet he is seen as right-wing because Wokism is an extreme form of neo-communism. He is anti-communist, thus anti-woke. You can't be a little anti-communism, a little anti-woke. JP is mirroring ordinary people's outrage and frustration. He is in touch. Anyone who can't see that is sadly OUT OF TOUCH/ WILLFULLY BLIND. David Fuller is clearly a flim-flammer stuck in trying to connect left and right-wing conversation. The problem with this is that Wokism is very far-left. You can be an ordinary left-wing supporter, a very Liberal-minded person, and see the danger of wokism. By being anti-woke you are not increasing polarisation because Woke is on one side of every other normal political ideology.... left, centre and right v. WOKE. @Jane B Robbins well JP is certainly mirroring my outrage and frustration as a woman because I don't think I should have to deal with a 6 foot plus fully biological male with a penis invading my bathroom, my shower and my women's circle just because he decides he is now a woman! JP is mirroring my outrage when I am expected to agree that it is okay for 10 year olds to be given dangerous puberty blockers, 12 year olds to be given cross sex hormones which cause permanaent sterilization and 14 year old girls to have their breasts chopped off! In some states these children do not even need parental consent to have criminal doctors, yes I do mean criminal doctors, ruin their health for life. Thousands of teen girls are now paying the horrific price of the woke gender re-education movement. Being trans has become popular and teen girls are the most vulnerable to the propaganda. Our children are being taught in kindergarden that they can be any gender and sex they want. Gender clinics are springing up everywhere and it has grown into a multimillion dollar industry. I am very very angry about this. Any woman should be. Generations of dedicated women fought hard for women's rights and for girls to feel proud of their own bodies. It is now transphobic to say that men cannot get pregnant. Our newest Supreme Court Justice cannot even define what a woman is! Which means she cannot protect women's rights. We are being erased.
