Brooklyn Film Camera is doing great work keeping Polaroid cameras alive. I visited them to see their polaroid camera museum including many SX-70 cameras, and the shop where all of the repairs happen.

Ah, Polaroid cameras! My father was a camera enthusiast, used a Leica/Visoflex setup in his dental practice to document the before, during, after of jaw reconstructions, etc... At home, he started using Polaroid roll-film cameras as long ago as 1959. His last was a Polaroid 360, purchased just a year or two before he passed away. He gave me a Swinger right around when I was 10-11 years old... But it was the SX-70 that my uncle bought as soon as it came out in '73 or so that captivated my attention. I'd already gotten my first 35mm SLR and a couple of Leica screw-mount RF cameras ... the SX-70 was just the most fascinating camera ever made at that point. I ended up not having an SX-70 to shoot with until sometime in the 1990s, re-discovered it well into the thirty-forty year mark of my photography, and enjoyed learning and using it for several years. I sold out of the Polaroid gear as I worked on funding new and digital camera gear in the early '00s and became heartbroken when Polaroid cancelled film production after 2005. I thought it was all gone forever. And then The Impossible Project began and simultaneous with that, my aging uncle gave me his Polaroid SX-70 ... purchased all those long years before ... in 2012 and I started up with it once again. For a couple of years, a dozen or more Polaroid SX-70s came my way, most of them given to me by people who no longer saw any point to them, and I also had a collection of Spectra cameras that came my way very inexpensively. I had a couple of thin years there myself and sold off all but my uncle's camera. Then things turned flush again and I acquired an SLR670m, then an SLR670a, and finally an SLR670x from MiNT. And that's where I've stayed. I've acquired a nice collection of all the useful (to me) Polaroid accessories for the SX-70 body as well as a filter holder and MiNT's flash units for them. I continue to buy both SX-70 and 600 films, mostly B&W for the SLR670m and SLR670x, mostly color for the SLR670a and SX-70. I shoot a couple of packs per month at least and am always learning new things with these cameras. I would say my favorites now are the SLR670a and SLR670x models ... the 'a' model preserves what Dr. Land had in mind best as it's really just an SX-70 uprated to the faster film with a better light meter sensor. The SLR670x allows both automatic use of both SX-70 and 600 films, plus manual exposure settings, which makes it much more versatile and capable when I want to do something a little more different than the norm. I learned of Brooklyn Film Camera only relatively recently and haven't yet used services from them; MiNT Camera in Hong Kong has done me very well with their uprated cameras and service work. Good to have both as viable, passionate suppliers in this niche of a niche universe in instant film photography!

That was awesome! My favorite Polaroid is the SX-70 Sonar ... I got one for free from a relative years ago, and it's magic. SX-70 film is great, and there are a couple of ND options for using with 600 and i-Type film, too.

Fun fact on the auto focus system, when Polaroid (original) folded, they put the sonar modules out on the market for pennies on the dollar. One of the most famous things that came out of that was the original ParkZone from the early 2000s. I still park my car in the garage using a ParkZone with the legacy Polaroid sensor. Another question, is the pull and peel film for the 4xx series Land cameras still available? I have my grandfather’s 450 and my dad’s 430 from the 1970s.
