Had the GameCube and the screen personally as a kid. That thing was the bees knees for passing time on road trips. It came with a 12 volt car adapter for the screen and console so you didn't even need to worry about needing an inverter to run it.

Its a cool idea that reminds me of the screen for the PSone but realistically look for a deal on a portable display intended for a laptop and you can get better specs for less money, and you just have to deal with it being a 2 piece unit

Agreed. That screen is absolute garbage. You can get a portable 15 inch oled screen for the same price. You'll be packing everything into a box with the power cable and controllers anyways, so having the screen attached doesn't really suddenly make an xbox any more portable anyways.

This reminds me of the older console portable hacks that were all over the place in the late 2000s. They could go even further with portability if they offered a battery solution, though some modifications would be required. The Xbox on runs on 12vdc after the AC stepdown.

honestly by the title I thought they were going to review a Ben Heck custom job or something lol
@razerow3391
@razerow3391 2 года назад
You mean like Ben Heck. Yeah and also they cost serious money and required sometimes that you literally cut the mainboard in some instances. Ben Heck would be the first to say this is something to be proud of. He has a whole career behind him, literally. He is now retired technically! And this company, that is VERY small, has done well to make something that can be mass produced. What Ben Heck mostly did was modding. This isn't a mod.. It's a peripheral. So it is actually a little more than the standard "ben heck mod" though Ben has done stuff like this as well. The video is being a little harsh. But the price you pay for not jumping through the weird hoops LTT put on companies when deciding who to shill. They must have only sent one review unit... Silly company. You should know you have to send like 3-5 otherwise LTT bitch. And if you dare make them buy their own because you, and I quote "want to supply customers before reviewers" then expect a review video where they are salty about the fact. LOL. I think that's why they don't mention Element 13 and Ben Heck... They are scared people will realise LTT is entertainment and in no way shape or form informative or educational. Like I wouldn't trust any review from them. I mean they used to be original but recently... Is there any RU-vidr they wont steal ideas from? Like Der8auer? But yeah to me this is quite the neat little design for families and people that perhaps use caravans or RVs a lot. Something with a leisure battery and plugs. Hell even if you just spend a lot of time in hotels. Can also see it being something of use in Children's hospitals perhaps for kids on chemo. I know someone that got into gaming and comics because of being in hospital so much. They got a DS and a PSP and loads of comics over the years they were in and out. It's so easy to dismiss a product based on your narrow view. It's like phones with huge buttons... To a normal person it does look silly but for someone with degenerative eyesight or poor eyesight it isn't... It's vital! Some products aren't aimed at people that watch LTT or the guys at LTT. This being the prime example. It's not for rich dads like Linus who can just buy his kids a steam deck each for when on holiday... Though I doubt he owns an RV. And none of them are the target user. Kinda like how they don't review Gillette Venus razors because they are aimed at women and all of them are men cause they only employ women in historically "female orientated" jobs and pretend that isn't blatant sexism lol.

Honestly, despite it's flaws (and me being a PC gamer through and through), I feel like this has a lot of potential and that they get to make a second version with some suggested improvements. Maybe it's possible to share / pass through some of the Xbox Series S's power so they can have more power to the screen and speakers. On top of that improve the build quality, on-screen menu, and maybe release 3D print files of the feet?
@gorjy9610
@gorjy9610 2 года назад
they just need to use dedicated PSU. Using power from unit is nice but it's not like xbox itself running from a battery and you need to avoid cables at all cost. Obviously this force them into compromises one can hardly accept at price they ask for the screen.
@vullord666
@vullord666 2 года назад
It'd be interesting if this prompts Microsoft to make an official version or even just open up settings so you can play with how power is sent (this isn't the only portable screen you can give power to). I still say Microsoft should make their own version of the Steam Deck. Maybe if game pass goes to steam and does well that could pave the way. The Series S proves they can provide beastly power to a small form factor and they've had the best fans since the One X. Plus with Game Pass and Cloud Gaming (not just streaming, but introducing a larger program that incorporates Microsoft Flight Simulator's strategy which is to download some data and pull the rest from the cloud during play to create the beat experience) and Remote Play they're in the best position to sell portable console gaming (of course they'd need to be the first to work with cellular companies to make a 5G enabled device).
@pearce05
@pearce05 2 года назад
@@gorjy9610 They don't even need that. Just add a male connector that plugs into the xbox, then a female connector for the xbox'x power supply to plug into, and split the power off to a simple voltage converter to power the display. You can get a brand new laptop for the price they're asking for this thing, so there's no way they can't fit like $1 worth of extra parts into the budget.
@gorjy9610
@gorjy9610 2 года назад
@@pearce05 it's little more than $1 when you make product for western market but I agree that they have enough in their budget for it. But I don't believe that any company would go with solution that involve end user tinkering around high voltage connection. Even if that mean on plug more wasted it would give them security and ability to keep same form factor (avoiding dealing with additional heat etc). Most crowd founded items never arrive to customers so I guess fact that they deliver anything is good but this also prove rule n02; if you get it in the end it will be constructed like "as seen on TV" product.
@pearce05
@pearce05 2 года назад
@@gorjy9610 two power connectors and a simple voltage converter are indeed less than $1 when bought in bulk, and there's plenty of room for those in the current form factor of this thing. I don't know what you're talking about as far as users tinkering with high voltage? All they have to do is plug it in like they normally would.

"the volume is not evenly stepped" From the way you described it the problem is that it IS evenly stepped, if each step in volume is even then increasing from 1 to 2 is doubling the volume but increasing from 99 to 100 is roughly 1%. What you actually want is the exact opposite and for it to scale as the volume increases, I'm not saying what you want isn't the better way of handling it but it feels like you used the wrong words to describe it (unless 'evenly stepped volume' is a term in the industry then you can just ignore this comment).

100% they are using the stock OSD that comes with the EDP converter, all the firmware they use is a bit rubbish same goes for the integrated amplifiers, probably why it sounds like junk. most of the converters are based on the RTD2xx chipset which has some customization but I don't think any for the volume stepping using the windows toolkit

Instead of powering it off of a USB 3.0 (that is the only name I will use for that spec, bite me USB-IF) port, they should have used a pass through for the Xbox's power cable to draw power from the wall. That would have removed the bottleneck and let them use a panel with a higher peak brightness.

I wonder why they opted for power from a usb port instead of have a power come from the main power cable. what I mean is that they could have built a plug into the back to go into the console and the you plug the power cable into the screen and have power go from there into both the screen and console, that way they could get over the usb power limitation. and yes, I know the would need to add a small psu to the screen, but those don't need to be big to power 1 monitor

Also I do not understand what this achieves, sure this eliminates the requirement for an external screen, but this doesn't add a battery, so you're still going to have to be close to a power source. Making its portability argument, flimsy at best. It's not portable if you need to be close to a charging point to use it.

While I appreciate the negatives being pointed out, I do think the positives outweigh them easily. Using a USB to power everything is pretty slick. It's neat and tidy and worth losing a couple of ports while in use. And when you are done using it portably, remove the xscreen and hook it back to the TV. Also why would you leave the xscreen on and hook it up to the TV? That's not what it's for... Build quality could be better but I don't abuse my tech

I wholly disagree. It would be trivial to have a passthrough for the other ports and at $250 they have the budget. You would leave it on so you could easily take it with you. If you're only using it on the go it's not an issue but if you're constantly swapping between TV and xscreen it's tedious to have to disconnect such a flimsy unit that's liable to break in the process.
@incendiary6243
@incendiary6243 2 года назад
You leave the screen on and hook it up to a tv because sometimes you're on the go, and other times you're at home. It would be more convenient if you didnt need to constantly unplug and replug everything. Also, its *really* expensive for what it is, which to me is the bigger issue, since I dont think itd be possible to keep it folded while in use on a tv because of heat issues

@vullord666
@vullord666 2 года назад
As far as the last point, you'd want a device like this to be "plug and play". Actually that's what the series S is right now. Its extremely easy to hook up and take down and light/small enough that it fits in your hand or any regular sized bag (and you literally only need 2 cords). Attaching and detaching an additional device EVERY time you want to go portable hurts the intent of that form factor. Think of the switch where you just pick it up off the dock and that's it (after initial setup). The console clearly wasn't built with a screen in mind and this is certainly a fine portable hack, but its a valid concern especially when you're telling someone to buy a product over $100.

Its an early adopter price. its a kickstarter company that does not have the capital as Sony and Microsoft. they cant make the first release at a loss. the product cater to the niche audience. the custom screen itself would already cost a lot to produce.

I wonder how useful this really is, since you still need to plug the Xbox into power. If you want to bring your console to a friend's house or go on a trip it makes sense, but even then, most people don't go over and have LAN parties anymore and if you bring the console to a hotel, they usually have a TV there already. I definitely like the concept though, if you could get that thing to run from a 12V cigarette lighter this could be a great way for kids to pass the time on long car rides.

As a semi-pro athlete, I can see a very obvious use case for this. We don't always get the best hotels, and although TVs are usually included in the rooms the io is not alway accessible, so being able to flip open an xbox for some healthy competition in between training sessions/games would be great.

They could have gone for power passthrough. How older TFT LCD clamshell attachments work. But I think you are better off getting a huion tablet. Still 1080p but all usb powered and sturdy. If you want a speaker just use a JBL go. This is the best generic solution I use for drawing on PC, watching firestick TV on the go or when visiting family, and temp setups for my Xbox one, PC, Playstation 3-5 at LANs. It all runs from a single USB/USB-C port. And additional a HDMI connector (for a firestick get a 5 dollar female to female connector)

This would have been fantastic for me in 2007-2011 in the Xbox 360 era. Lots of lan parties and dragging around the Xbox 360. But these days... There are indeed so many more alternative options that 250 dollars/euro's is probably just not worth it. Sadly, because the idea is cool.

Anyone else besides me loves portable gaming because it enables the laziness to play your games anywhere in your house that's comfortable, and not because you can travel outside with it? My favorite gaming systems have been the GBA, NDS, 3DS, PSP, Switch, my phone, and to the lesser degree, Wii U, because they allowed me to play on the couch and take my unit with me and play in another room without any fuss. The actual idea/concept of making games portable outside the comfort of your home has been one of many inconveniences for me. #1 You risk losing your system to forgetfulness or thievery. #2 You never find yourself in a peaceful moment in public to just enjoy your gaming experience, be it from un-ideal lighting and noise situations making it hard to see your screen or hear your speakers #3 You'll never find another stranger in the wild to play with like Nintendo commercials would have you believe because #4, you'll always be "that guy" playing your system alone in public #5 Drags your pocket down with extra weight and buldge. #6 You won't find the time in public to enjoy your gaming session anyway unless you're on a plane flight or transit where you're stuck in a seat for a good while... Just no matter how I slice it, portable gaming's advantages just becomes incredibly inconvenient because the enjoyment of gaming demands time and comfort both of which becomes hard to come by when you're moving about. When I was a kid it was different because I had excess tone and willing to put up with discomfort for a game, but it's different as an adult; and the only thing I want out of my system is the ability to just change rooms/couches/beds. Or am I the only one that feels that way?
