Materials Used in this demonstration:
Arches Hot Press Watercolour Paper - 300gsm Smooth (STUDY DRAWING)
Fabriano Paper - Clay (FINAL DRAWING)
Staedtler Mars Lumograph H
Staedtler Black - 2B 4B and 6B
Graphite Powder - I make my own from sanded down pencils, the byproduct of sharpening... (DON"T BREATH THIS STUFF IN!)
Mechanical pencil (Y Studio - Brass) .7mm 2B
Generals White Chalk Pencils
Staedtler Mechanical Erasers - 8mm and 2mm.
I'm wearing a cotton glove to avoid any skin oils affecting the paper and smudging the drawing.

To everyone who says one day i will draw more, learn to draw, learn to paint or do more art, start today, start right now, one step, a small one, take it right now. The problem is we think we have plenty time, but we don't, we have an unknown amount of time so use it, use it now. Don't hesitate, enjoy the process, learn and be happy, best thing you could ever do for yourself is be happy knowing your one day started today. Love your work Andrew it reminds me i need to pick up a pencil or a piece of charcoal and draw, draw, draw.

I havn't drawn since I left high school... I was recommended to watch your videos and your art is amazing. Thankyou for sharing your techniques and skills with us. I like the way you used your left arm underneath the right arm for leverage. I struggled with smudging a lot when using this medium.

I've been drawing all my life and this is the first time that I can remember seeing someone shade or blend with a paint brush. I guess that's one way to keep your fingers clean.

Hey Andrew, I like how you work out of the toned paper. You built up the volume quickly after erasing for the highlights on the right side. Great portrait! Did you use an electric eraser?

Great technique - I have never understood the hatching and linear shading technique. Do you slant the lines to match the direction of the contours or all one way slants overall. I love looking at the old black & white illustrations in cowboy books and old grimms fairytale stories. I think some were etched. Love for you to explain your techniques. Rosie Hoy

Got to the end and realized you literally stumped that whole thing and used the eraser for the lights, after the lay-in (+ the black and white lowlights/highlights). Did you intend that at the onset, or just realize it could be a fun challenge halfway through? (I do the latter all the time, lol)

Thank you for taking the time to do all these wonderful videos!! Is there any way during these time laps you can flash on the screen which tool you are using and pencil type, shade? ie....HB , 2B, 4B, and so on, white chalk, white charcoal, blending stumps, pencils that look like stumps...i couldn't figure out what those were. etc. etc... TY!!

Interesting. The approach to the thumbnail drawing was very different from how you developed the final. I wasn't expecting the liberal use of the stump to apply the graphite. Haven't seen that done before. Do you dip the stump into graphite powder?

I really enjoy watching you work painting or drawing either one I was wondering if you airbrush I do airbrushing too and I also do graphite art and painting I I painted acrylics but I've learned to blend it well and airbrushing of course blending is a problem the problem with airbrushing is on the good equipment I've got that water airbrushes and others the same way with the graphite don't get cheap pencils get good pencils I've got Mitsubishi Statler Mars lemongrass and also have their special black lemograph black which is really good and then I got these maps and finish pencils by Faber castell Pitt graphite Matt all these are great pencils for drawing

Andrew, you may have covered this before but do you ever get burned out after the first sketch where it would almost seem as though you're repeating what you've just drawn to an extent because your first sketch would be completely acceptable to alot of us.
