Most people have always written Prince off as the little purple dude in Mpls. He was rarely taken seriously. Thus, he didnt make the top 100 guitar players list. He blew past all of them in this performance. NOBODY in that room knew he had it in him. They had heard him play, but had no idea what he would do. I live 10 minutes away from Paisley Park & I have been to his after hours parties more times than I can count. Paisley would call me when he wanted to play (dont know how they got my number, thank God they did.) I would go there & there could be only 30 other people there. He played these micro concerts because he just had to get the music out. He was so talented- every guitar solo was his prayer to God that you were lucky enough to be a part of. My favorite solos were on the nights he’d play just cuz he wanted to. I remember being there & thinking there are a million people that would give their right arm to be where I was. When he played for joy- he played from his soul. My favorite jams are not recorded for TV (although, everything he did at Paisley was recorded & is in the vault). The times he’d play just to adjust a song before a concert or just wanted to gauge how an audience would respond to a new song- it was a religious experience. I saw the face of God in his solos. Nobody will ever top that.
(From a fellow Minneapolitan) - Thank you for your heartfelt and kind words about my old boss. They touched me deeply and brought back some wonderful memories. I could not have said them any better. Prince's talent was definitely a gift from God, and he praised God everyday for that gift by working tirelessly to perfect it. Alan Leeds, Prince's road manager, worked for James Brown before coming on board with Prince (check out his book on the subject) so he might be of a different opinion than me - James is touted as being "the hardest working man in show business," but after experiencing Prince, I'm not so sure about that claim.... just sayin'. Thanks again, Rishi Beauty.
If I remember correctly that's why he did this solo the way he did it is because of his ranking and top 100 guitars he was very upset and had something to prove to everyone
Great reaction. Prince wasn't just playing on George Harrison's tribute, he was being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the reason for the gathering I believe, and made quite sure he was more than worthy. In this performance he does what he does in every hair-raising solo - plays exactly what I want to hear when. Also in his live performance of Motherless Child, and his guitar will make *you* weep alongside it in Just My Imagination, 1988 Paard van Troje Small Club Concert, where he does it again. Incredible musician.
I have adored Prince for the last 38 years of my 50 years of living, he has always been my number one. I got into him just before the Purple Rain explosion, loved watching his career, he is and always will be beyond amazing. Saw him live several times, his shows were mind blowing! Was within a foot of him one night at an after party and all I wanted to do was to thank him for all he had done for us, but I completely froze - seeing him in person, the eyes...those eyes did something to a person, I could barely breathe let alone speak! I really enjoyed watching your video, I of course totally agree with you....Prince was one of a kind, there will never be another like him, we are just incredibly fortunate to have lived during the time he was here. RIP Prince, I hope heaven has concerts, because I definitely plan to be there to see you again!! 💜
What tickles me about this is...Prince didn't get to rehearse this with them the night before and they were all a little Leary as to what was gonna happen. They obviously didn't know the depth of the man's talent. Switch..don't know if you know, but later on in the evening, Prince and his band performed, as he was ALSO being inducted into the R&R Hall of Fame. Extraordinary performance..John Blackwell showed out that night too. Please watch it if you haven't seen it. I enjoyed so much watching you enjoy the GOAT. Composer, arranger, instrumentalist, vocalist producer, band leader, sound engineer, lighting engineer..,just on and on and on.
Prince went to the rehearsal. But the stupid dude in the cap, the one at the far left near Jeff Lynne, would not give Prince any solo time. During the rehearsal, the guy jumped in and took the first solo spot, then jumped in on the end solo spot. They ran out of time, but Prince assured the producer that it was going to be okay. It wasn't just ok, it was spectacular!!!!
@@tammyf.7864 Yep, that's the way it was. I remember Prince being quoted as telling the producer to let them just keep doing their thing at the rehearsal. He'd just be there for the performance, lol@
@M Levi It wasn't Jeff Lynne that treated Prince that way. It was the guy in the cap who is standing behind Jeff - the very last guy on the left on the stage. He's the one that has the slow, weepy guitar solo in the middle of the performance. His name is Mike Mann or something like that. Jeff Lynne is a sweetheart and a great musician. He's in the rock band ELO.
@M Levi His group's name is ELO for Electric Light Orchestra. The band has songs with orchestral instruments such as violins, cellos, etc. Listen to "Living Thing," "Telephone Line," "Mr. Blue Sky," Don't Bring Me Down," "Evil Woman," and "Hold on Tight." They're really cool!
I think Prince was bowing in homage to Dhani and his presence and in a small wink was saying "Do you think George will approve?" So many speak of all this guitarists, but fail to comment on how pleased Dhani must have been to have his father honored in this manner, and the humility of these guys to include him. I get teary eyed when I see him. The loss must have been horrible for him. What an uplifting day it must have been for him.
He also did that out habit, I think that he was playing on a song that they had not rehearsed and he was trying to get the maximum volume out of his guitar,( I also think the song was a bit slow for him?,)By the way the DJ said he wouldn't have been surprised if that when prince threw the guitar in the air that it was never seen again!?. What?, does he know how many #1 hits came out of that guitar?. No way. The guy he threw the guitar to, the one that also caught him?; that dude guarded that guitar and prince 🎸. With his life, probably. R.I.H. Christopher Tracy.
Love your enthusiasm about the ONE and ONLY Prince! It was not just his skills, but his charisma. He had something that swept you off your feet. I watched a few reactions now to this tribute (as you I am obsessed with his performance) and some of the guys are just freezing and looking at him in admiration. That's what he did to us... There is so much to say about him but I think you feel me 💜
He did not make the list of 100 best guitar players of all time and he was super pissed off. This solo is his way of saying FU!!! I don't blame him, he should have made that list. 100 players 100!! And he didn't make the list? BLASPHEMY!!!!!!
I really want to thank the idiots that left him off the list, Prince was super petty and b/c of their major blunder, the world has gotten to witness one of the best guitar solos of all time. There are people who know nothing about this instrument 🎸 but now are learning, loving, and showing appreciation for the art and artists who make it look so easy.
I read recently somebody asked Eric Clapton what it was like to be the greatest guitarist of all time and he said he didn't know that the person would have to ask Prince.
I've watched so many reactions to this performance in the past couple days (having only seen it for the first time a few days ago!) And I instantly saw when Prince was coming in because Dhani's face lights UP! I adore this solo 💜
Yes, prince was probably mouthing the words to Dhani, is it my turn?; and Dhani laughing and smiling nodding his head yes. And prince absolutely killed it.
I’m a diehard PRince Fan and I’ve seen a number of peoples reactions to this fantastic tribute to George Harrison, but I honestly think I like yours the best. I don’t know if you are a Prince Fan or just a music fan who did a heck of a lot of research on him., but I am impressed. I immensely enjoyed your in-depth commentary. I’m not a musician so it was wonderful to learn more about his musical abilities through your perspective. And I also enjoyed the information you shared about other members in this star-studded ensemble. And the joy that you were experiencing while watching this is infectious. I can feel it all the way over here in Philadelphia PA! 😊🎧🎸
Thanks! Yeah, I became a DJ because of how much I love music, but I especially have a soft spot for classic rock and pop of the 60's through the 90's. Stuff that's been really time-tested, you know? So I've got more than a passing interest in Prince, Petty, the Beatles ... there's so much greatness shoved into this one video!
Absolutely the GREATEST solo of all time. NOBODY! Not eruption..hendrix..clapton anyone can touch it. Stevie ray comes close but...nope. UNFKNBELIVABLE
Two things happened to Prince in his career . He got bood opening for The Rolling Stones and when MJ called him on stage with James Brown he wasn’t fully prepared. Ever since he has done nothing but improve as a musician on and off stage . He taught me to never give up . There will never be another Prince Rodgers Nelson .
That Rolling Stone gig was crazy, they didn't just get boo'ed -- bottles, food and cans were thrown at the band and slurs yelled. That venue held 100000 angry Stones fans & bikers, there was racism & homophobia involved. Prince was wearing his thigh highs & bikini briefs with trench coat that day. Prince was shaken but he returned for the 2nd show to the same reaction. I bow down to Prince, that little dude was unbelievably strong.
@@lavenderbee3611 I have no doubt that some of those people ended up being fans if not attendants of his concerts. Over the years and shows that I attended grew more diverse as time went on.
I never got much into guitar solos. But I listen to this solo routinely as if there is a coded message in it from the celestial Heavens. It always makes me feel as if there's perfection in the universe ... as if Prince is raining down pure joyful creativity. He gave and gave and gave.
When Prince was a small child he was very sickly. One day, he told his aunt he'd been visited by an angel and was cured. He was not sickly anymore after that. Rosie Gaines, his most popular backup singer, (and myself) believe that he had a gift from God and that he really was blessed by an angel to bring his musical genius to the world.
On top of being a mad genius guitar player, Prince was also a brilliant showman and a great team player. He cut his solo down every time Tom Petty had a singing part, supporting the singer's time.
If you look to the right of the screen from time to time, you can see Prince standing on the stage, but off to the side. He's standing not too far from Dhani Harrison. Yeah, Prince gave everybody a guitar lesson that night!!! SUPREME talent!!! (And dude, I love your reaction to this! I'm so glad that you understand the complexity of Prince's performance!)
Prior to seeing this, my favorite guitar solo was David Gilmour in Comfortably Numb, but after seeing this, it was bumped down. This is a truly epic performance, and there aren't enough superlatives to express the greatness of it.
It was Danny,George Harrison’s son that really wanted Prince there, the likes of Jeff Lynn wasn’t sure, because they thought Prince was gimmicky, but Prince showed who was Boss on the stage, you can see Danny give a look like,’yeah man keep going with his nods🎸🎸🎸🎸Prince what a Great guitarist and general All round Genius,Prince just raised that Great song to A whole New level..A genius honouring A genius 🎸🎸👍👍👍Prince just tore it up,and made that guitar cry and weep, and talk, awesome Axe work🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸Prince,George Harrison and Tom Petty truly Great artists who brought beauty to the world, and made it a better place from them being on this Earth..❤️Prince had his favourite famous Telecaster from Since he was a kid,so you know he meant business 🎸,dude that Telecaster was his baby, that guitar was with Prince through out his career,it was on the Purple Rain the movie..
My brother showed this to me a couple weeks ago for the first time and now I have had SEVERAL friends show it to me at separate times. Crazy coincidence but I’m not upset since it’s amazing! Love that you reacted to this.
Thanks! I'm glad you liked it! This is one of those tent pole performances that people have and will continue to talk about for a very long time, I think ... 😉
I loved Prince from the beginning of his career. My first and only ever music concert was Prince during his Musicology tour. I knew he was awesome but I was no where near prepared for that experience. There is recorded Prince and it is a whole other experience in person. I listened to some of the other participants and in general they said they come to see Prince for his guitar work. He did a solo that mimicked an orgasm and I have no words to describe how I felt during that time. I am not into guitar solos but from the ones I have heard, this one is my favorite.
Musicology was such a great record! It came out when I was first getting involved in music, and I remember hearing the title track on that album and I instantly loved it.
Thank you for paying proper homage to the Legendary Prince, the ultimate Musicians' Musician. Just awesome, your enthusiasm is contagious, do more Prince reaction videos :)
Prince wrote and recorded more music that every single person on that stage put together.. 48 studio albums, 100s of extended, mixes, B-Side tracks, 100s of unreleased tracks that are possessed by True fans, and there is enough fully finished material in his vault to release an album every single year for the rest of this century.. If anyone knows of a more prolific musician than Prince, I would love to hear about it.. The Purple Yoda is playing his guitar for the angles now..
The man he shared the stage with Tom Petty, had a humble 16 studio albums in comparison, however, he had 28 top ten hits, 10 of which were number ones. His family HAS released a box set called "An American Treasure" since his passing with never before heard tracks, alternate studio versions and demos of hits. And they say there's MUCH more. Petty was also a member of the Traveling Wilbury's which consisted of Bob Dylan, fellow performer on this night Jeff Lynne, Roy Orbison and George Harrison. He had a solo hit #1 without 'The Heartbreakers' with You Don't Know How it Feels and is already in the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame. I'd say his stats match up pretty darn well with Prince's overall. The guy was around for 40 years and never got irrelevant. THAT is a testament to how strong Tom Petty's chops really were.
If you are looking for a musician/composer/artist as prolific I would have to say Frank Zappa. He also had a vault from which still albums get released each year even 27 years after his death. Frank was also underrated as a guitarist and also got into a fight with Warner Brothers about wanting to release too much material. Speaking about playing to the angels, in December 1993 it was announced that "Composer Frank Zappa left for his final tour".
Def one of the best reactions to this amazing tribute, I feel like when Prince threw the guitar in the air, he was throwing it to George and the guitar never came down it just ascended to heaven a magic guitar played by a magical musician and guitarist in his own right, a legend who wrote a legendary song about a guitar that’s actually not about a guitar but views on the world through this guitar, a gift from a Prince to a Rock legend. 🤘 Man I couldn’t begin to pick a solo, but this is right up there, so many from a Prince alone, I love the guitar too much to single out anyone, I just enjoy anything with great solos intros and finales, they all have a special place, but this is def ranks anywhere with anyone anytime imo. cheers.
His guitar tech caught his guitar. It was prearranged. Prince was an excellent showman. I agree with your choice, I look at this video regularly. A masterpiece!
Prince often did the dissappearing guitar "trick". Thats one of his 2 most favourite "tele" style guitars (Honer H.S Anderson - Japanese made "Madcat") - so it was not left behind for sure ;) He actually walked off, got in his car and left for his other concert that he was already late for.... Thats just Prince.... xD
Prince did not show up for the rehearsal for this performance and knocked it out of the park anyway.. This was his way to show other musicians just how good he was on the guitar.. Tom was blown away.. As everyone else who didn't know he was the master of guitar, now they do..
I totally agree with you. I've watched this many times. I never appreciated the depth of Prince's guitar skills until this video. IMHO: He killed it. George, Tom, Prince-May they all rest in peace.
You took the word "epic" right out of my mouth. This has always been in my top 5. Thank you so much for your thoughtful, respectful sharing of knowledge.
Prince was notorious/infamous throuighout the '80s for his ever-present & sometimes over-bearing bodyguards, who would often carry him around piggyback or bridal-style -- I like to think that little fallback was a nod back to those crazy times
I've watched 40 of these reaction videos and not in a single one anyone mentions that he broke a string 2 seconds into the solo, but managed to just skim over it and play a fucking amazing solo.
Agree110%! Don’t you love Dhani’s face loving watching Prince play on his dad’s song. Sorry “stairway”… this takes the cake. Paul playing the original piano intro. Perfection! Dhani is smaller than the guitar. Prince earned that red chapeau he did! Love that you’re taking us through everything. Christine McVie played one offer. I think it may be a Doppler effect. (Heavy instrument!)just guessing on the Doppler. PS. I sang with George Harrison when he asked me to sing on his movie score “The Time Bandits” when he laid some slide of sang bg vocals with me during my Ex Mick Fleetwood’s solo album at the Mill Jimmy Page’s studio. Wow I still have to pinch myself. Jeff Lynne also one of the nicest guys. But Prince just blew my hat in a creek. Never question his ability to cut a rug! 😂. Dang. TY again for the breakdown. Then throws it in the air!!!😳😳😳🤯
That was one of his favorite guitars, he often threw his guitars like that. He had someone in his crew whose sole job was to catch his guitars. I believe that particular guitar is on display at Paisley Park. I loved this video and your reaction and insight. It was fun, informative, and refreshing. I can't sing or play an instrument to save my life, but I love all types and genres of music.
as a guitar player I also believe that this is the best solo I have ever heard. I have watched it over and over and the emotion in this song so so strong
I totally agree with your assessment! You know I always loved Prince + considered him one of the greatest. He wasn't just an excellent guitar player but on some albums he played every instrument, was the producer, + filled every position it took to make an album. One of my other favorite is Robbie Robertson.
Billy Preston on piano deserves mentioned.. Winwood play's Hammond organ. Mann from Lynne's band play's that guitar part. Even though Steve Winwood play's guitar as good as that!
I just wrote the same comment above, though i didn't know Billy Preston was on this stage too, is he really a part of this? Didn't see it on the video.
I really enjoyed watching this tribute to George with you. I'm a huge Prince fan, and this is also my favorite guitar solo of all time. Watching your smiling face and seeing how excited you are about it as well made it twice as fun to watch.
I just watched this performance on another reaction channel and I was saying where is Prince? Prince is supposed to be in here, then I spotted him way at the end of the stage. I thought that was strange, Prince off to the side of the stage like he’s not there. Then when he came out my jaw actually dropped I was speechless what a freaking incredible incredible incredible guitar solo. I wish the camera angle was better on him it was OK but it was not great I wanted to watch every single little movement of that man’s hands on that guitar and his facial expressions of course. Just absolutely incredible
The Purple Yoda ain't no joke on that guitar.. It's like he was born with one in his hands.. I feel that if something happened that would limit his ability to accurately move his fingers and couldn't play his guitar anymore, he would just check out.. I cannot imagine how much strain that would cause, emotionally, for him..
I would check out Prince Live Montreux 2009 concert. It's a rock jazz combo show. The slow down version of Little Red Corvette is exceptional jazz guitar work. He also does a great (If not the best cover) Jimi Hendrix cover (a sped up version). He starts the show with a slow building song When I lay My Hands On U that like the lyrics builds to please.
Prince always made his mysterious entrances. The camera not panning on him was by design so he could emerge with this amazing solo. This was no different then when he opened his own show. He was the whole fk'n show even playing with legends.
The speaker you're talking about is a Leslie. It was originally developed because Donald Leslie wanted to get the Hammond organ closer to the sound of an authentic pipe organ. But Hammond never sold them directly (mainly because they weren't wild about the fact that it "showed up" the original sound of the organ), so you would buy the Leslie separately. (There were also more "universal" Leslies that worked with other brands of organ, or other instruments entirely.) My dad has a Cordovox branded Leslie (the CL-30) that's designed to go with his vintage Cordovox electric accordion/tone generator setup. The big difference with it was it just had a single rotating speaker as opposed to the duals the "famous" Leslies had. And instead of a speed switch on the side, it used a foot pedal. I remember helping him lug both of those cabinets around, both of them were HEAVY. But the sound you would get out of it was fantastic, and once you got used to the spin up/spin down speed you could use the transitional sound characteristics musically as well. I think at this point the speaker cone has succumbed to dry rot but the mechanicals are otherwise sound, I should try to dig it out and restore it.
It's Marc Mann, not Steve Winwood, that plays the first guitar solos which are carbon copies of Clapton's originals. Marc Mann does a excellent job matching the original guitar tone. Then of course Prince takes the outro solo to the outer realms of interstellar space....
I was a little reluctant to watch your reaction due to the runtime but I must say I'm SO glad I did. Well done, I love the respect and your admiration for our beloved Prince. Bonus thought, you also shared a small bit of your music knowledge with us common folk...outstanding!
I give all respect to all the other musicians, but when I first saw this I kept wondering where is Prince? Then you catch just a quick glimpse of that red hat and shirt. I told my daughter he is about to do something EPIC. You could feel it! This performance is one of my all time favorites. In just the first ten seconds he adjusts the sound several times. It had to be perfect. That falling off of the stage was Classic Prince. The look on all their faces is priceless. He did all of that without losing respect for the song and to George. I will never get tired of this💜
One measure of talent is if someone sounds "That sounds like ________." The measure of epic talent is nobody compares you o anyone. Prince, Queen, the Who, etc.. Another measure of epic transcendent talent is when the world stops when you die.
Yes,Mr Switch PDX,I totally agree with you.I have loved this song for years and have heard about any possible version of it,but what Prince does here is amazing. It really surprised me that Prince has these out of this world guitar skills. My other top solos are the Chicago 25 or 6 to 4 solo, the Wishbone Ash Throw down the sword double solo,Led Zeppelin's Stairway to Heaven solo, among others. And let me say this, you seem to be a very likeable guy.Thank you for this analysis of a great performance.I am aware that there are some very negative comments on Prince's performance here, even somewhat from Dani Harrisson himself (look it up),but for me,they cannot diminish this masterfull act.
You absolutely captured everything that was amazing about this guitar solo. You are right in saying this is the greatest of all time. I don’t know how many times I’ve watched but it still gives me chills. I heard that the story behind this was that there had just been a release of the 100 greatest guitarists of all time. Unbelievable but Prince didn’t make the cut ( wtf ) and it pissed him off. Apparently there was a lot of back and forth in preparation of this show and arguments about which guitarists would do their part where. Prince decided to play it cool and said “don’t worry about it, I’ll just turn up and come up with something toward the end”. What I love about this is that, in true Prince style, he rocked up and went SAVAGE. Blew everyone away and socked it to em’! He not only proved his place in the top 100 guitarists of all time but, as a Black Artist on a stage of white rockstars, he DOMINATED and REPRESENTED his community. People forget this guy has the roots of Dylan, Hendrix, Brown and every rock guitar god that every inspired him. No one touches Prince in the music world. He is the GOAT forever!
You need to check out Prince's version of "Just my Imagination " Just as EPIC if not more than the video you just critiqued ...trust me...it blew me away! Peace
Richard. Yep, was reading all the comments and wondered if anyone would mention "Just my imagination". An amazing interpretation. You did. Props to you, sir
Starting with one long note that changes everything... it is like an explosion. Everything he does from then on is just mind-blowing. Compared to him the others look small and unimportant. And he is so aware of it.......
Piano-Billy Preston / Organ-Steve Winwood / Guitars left to right / Marc Mann Jeff Lynne (ELO) Tom Petty Dhani Harrison Prince Scott Thurston (bass) Steve Ferrone (drums)
My favorite live solo aside from this one is probably from John Mayer when he played ‘Crossroads’ with Clapton. Not only is he sharing the stage with one of the top guitarists in history, but he has one of most fluid, diverse, and complex improvised solos I’ve ever heard in my life. It’s truly an incredible performance. Check it out
@@DJSwitchPDX yes! Many people don’t even know that’s him. I saw him two months ago and the guitar is literally an extension of his body, just like Prince. He could play in his sleep. Honestly another legendary performance that comes to mind is when SRV broke his string and seamlessly swapped guitars mid song without missing a beat
You have been the only one to point out Dhani and Tom's reactions to Prince leaning back, THANKS! I always get too focused on all the talent and hotness of "His Royal Badness". Still swooning after all these years.
Steve Winwood on organ. Not sure, but that lead at beginning making that guitar weep is fr Jeff Lynne's band?? AWESOME job!! I listen to this video all the time and have for YEARS, a fav of mine!! Prince slays...miss him terribly. 💜 Yea, that guitar is history... Recently watching a lot of YTs reaction and find excitement in it. And the song on it's own, a masterpiece fr a gift to us all. RIP GH. This video is now a treasure with both Petty 🤞 and Prince 💜 gone...RIP boys. You may enjoy Heart live at Kennedy Center Honors Stairway to Heaven if you haven't already, I believe you would be moved!! 👍
The guitarist at the start that the DJ identified as Steve Winwood(?) was Marc Mann, who was booked to play a world tour with Jeff Lynne and ELO but the tour was cancelled.
So good! “His Royal Badness” killed it for sure. This is my favorite Beatles tune. Sweet to see a mini Traveling Wilburys reunion too. Re: my favorite guitar solo /Jimi Hendrix- All Along The Watchtower. It’s surprising every time. I think I know what he’s going to do next, but NO. Thanks again, MAESTRO, for sharing your knowledge and perspective. Keep jammin’
Steve Winwood is on the organ. Marc Mann is the guy on the guitar that does the 'wah wah' actually, he has played with Jeff Lynne (ELO) and Danny Elfman (Oingo Boingo) in the past.
If you want to see more amazing guitarwork from Prince look at: 'The Sacrifice of Victor'. Tracks: 'The Ride', 'Call the Law' and 'Peach'. Showmanship, skills and soul altogether on the highest level possible.
This has been my all tone favorite guitar solo since the first time I watched it. Fun fact, he didn't even rehearse this. There's a video of the story behind this performance which also explains the guitar vanishing. Thank you so much for picking apart this entire performance and what makes it such an amazing moment in the history of music, of all genres and of all time. People get lost on why it's so profound and you really helped break it down. New sub for sure!
Bro. I was sitting at a bar in Carlsbad, CA one afternoon when this aired. We shut off all the other TVs & EVERYBODY IN THE BAR got quiet and we all watched this epic performance happen in real time. When it was over....We continued to be quiet, almost in disbelief. And then the applause began. We all knew what we just watched will never be done again. I bought a round for everyone to celebrate.
They released a directors cut of this a few weeks ago with a few more split screen views of full length and close up of Princes hands playing. I watched the original broadcast on TV that I TiVoed and just watched on repeat. It’s my favorite recorded guitar solo of all time because of the perfect storm of Epic Greatness that it represents with it being the closing number at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a tribute to George Harrison of his iconic song with that band of assembled legends including Harrison’s own son playing at the highest level and then recorded so beautifully. But It is as good as it is and as compelling because we are witnessing a rare moment of pure genius that transcends it all and takes us into another dimension altogether. . We are watching a human being who was born for that kind of peak performance and he’s channeling spirit in a way that seems totally effortless and it’s just a rare and sublime thing to witness. It’s all of Prince-the musician and showman-his attitude, his style, his bravado, his goofyness and pure and utter joy of playing that is simply unique. Erica Clapton who is considered to be one of the greatest guitarists of all time was asked by a journalist what it felt like to be the greatest and he replied: “ Ask Prince”. Now having said all that I recently came across Prince’s 1984 live version of his most famous song Purple rain which in the movie of the same name was written by his Revolution band mate Wendy Malvoin and it’s Wendy who starts the performance off which is one of the longest and coolest intros to any live song I have ever seen. Now then, OMG DJ Switch you are in for such a treat if you haven’t already seen this clip as it’s Prince at the very peak of his youth and first real flush of super fame and it’s just indescribably amazing what he does on that stage in the ensuing 10 mins. It’s beyond Epic and for me represents the very pinnacle of his power and talent. @@DJSwitchPDX Please let me know what you think of it. I believe it warrants a follow up reaction video of its own as it’s long enough for you to wax lyrical about that time in Prince’s career while talking about the movie. Also if you haven’t seen this performance which is similar as also at the Rock and Roll Hall of fame with an equally legendary musician Bruce Springsteen and the genius guitar solo from Tom Morello of Rage against the Machine with another Epic and transcendent performance that Is up there with the Prince one for the uniqueness of Morello’s sound and playing style and just so original. @@yvetischo Check out Prince doing Led Zeppelin's "Whole Lot of Love".. The 1st guitar solo is Freaking Awesome.. Most people don't even know about this one.. Cheers Mate..
You just got a new subscriber. You gave a brother his well-deserved props, and provided some damn good technical info. Have loved Prince since I was a little girl! Yours is such a great reaction.
In this now iconic tribute to the great George Harrison, it can only be PRINCE! Many great guitarists --including Harrison himself and Eric Clapton's epic soloing together at the Bangladesh Relief Concert in 1971--have done superb, classic solos on this amazing Harrison ballad. But Prince's solo is SANCTIFIED. He is summoning the prophetic spirits of BOTH George Harrison AND Jimi You-Know-Who; and they are THERE. Dhani's breaking out in that joyous smile? It's not only because he is playing along with an artist, THE artis,t who really is the spirit doppelganger of Dhani's father -- but also because Dhani recognizes that in Prince's moment, in Prince's incandescent summoning, he has brought the Trinity (George, Jimi, and the living Prince) into communion. And now Prince is in that Panthéon, where he belongs, with George and Jimi. Yes, as a professional guitarist, I know what Prince is doing, as any well-educated, versatile, practiced and seasoned guitarist will. BUT IT DOESN'T MATTER: because HE DID IT, not any of us, and he did it with a Holy Fire of inspiration and feeling for that moment. And that's the difference between a highly proficient, excellent journeymen/women guitarist and a bona fide genius: we've got the vocabulary. But Prince plays the poetry. EXCELLENT, moving choice.
One of Prince's techs, Matt Larson, told a very funny story about Prince and his drum machine... Shortly after the memorial service we had following Prince's passing, a group of "family members" went to Paisley and took the tour. For myself, not having been inside Paisley since '88, everything had changed. It was a weird feeling. The young tour guide introduced herself and beckoned us to follow as she recited her script. Room by room, it was humorous to hear so many contradictions to her recitations until, frustrated, she began to tear up. Then everyone felt bad... I stepped up and told her that, with the information she had been given (by Graceland?), she was doing a fantastic job, but what she might not realize was that the group she was touring was made up of the builders of Paisley and that the information she had been given was simply inaccurate... We made our way into Studio-B in which was displayed the Linn LM-1 drum machine. Tech Matt started to laugh nervously, obviously reliving a harrowing memory, and told the story of how Prince had purchased one of the earliest LM-1s and how Prince, being Prince, instructed Matt to modify it so that it would do what HE wanted it to do how HE wanted it done. After listening carefully to Prince and studying the wiring diagrams, Matt, with sweat pouring down his brow, picked up his electric drill and began punching holes into this brand new, expensive, high-tech instrument all the while muttering to himself, "Matt, don't f*** up, Don't f*** up, Don't f*** up..!! I guess you had to be there; it was a funny story. Matt must've done something right as he continued working for prince for several years and, as we all know, Prince used that drum machine extensively. Well done, Matt!
Mr DJ I thank you and a new subscriber just because of Prince there wasn't a whole lot of musicians like him truly truly incredible and not a lot of people see that his musicianship his he was way ahead of his time so everything you said it's so very true and a lot of us don't realize that or see his awesomeness I mean he truly was a Mozart of our time I'm so grateful I got to see him in concert a couple of times thank you so much
Beautiful and probably best rendition of While My Guitar Gently Weeps. However, just watching your facial expressions thru the whole song is just priceless. Thank you!!!!😉🙂👊😘
My favorite solo ever by the person who wrote it would be Eddie Van Halen's Eruption. Just nothing comes close. It had never been done at the time. Every second is pure innovation. Favorite solo MOMENT of all time? Rob Joyce, a fan, has the guts to make a sign for a Keith Urban concert asking if he can play guitar on a song, Joyce then proceeds to nail every note so well that Keith himself is floored, and the band rejoins the song mid way as they were on break... even the stage lighting crew comes back to help the kid live his dream. for anyone intrigued, here's the video of it. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-xsu2AUxcH4k.html
Great rendition of this brilliant Harrison song. Prince showing of his enormous talent. What more do you want?! Clapton playing this song at the tribute concert 'For George', saying goodbye to his good old friend, is for me the ultimate version. It's the original player at his best and when listening carefully his guitar is really weeping. A solo doesn't always have to be epic or long. There is a short one in 'Time' of the Finnish band 'Wintersun' somewhere halfway a live studio performance. It's a perfect little beauty of skill and composition and very technical. I can listen to it all day long. And there is also Derek Trucks, probably the most gifted guitarist at this moment. His technique and sound is one of a kind. I think he is a living legend and every solo of his hands is great. But..........: The most impressive and unbelievable guitar solo that came to my ears years ago is from the one and only Terry Kath: Chicago: 25 or 6 to 4 live at Tanglewood, 1970. It's flowing and fast, no pauses or tricks, it's unusual in sound and technique, it's just a man and his guitar and he's killing it. It's a blistering solo and number one for me. Such a pity he died so young. Prince is absolutely there with the greats. A multi super talent. I miss the guy so much.
