This is my take on the subject of handling trout and taking that precious photo or video, that many of us like to have as a reminder of that special moment.
This isn't based on anything other than my 40 years on the water here in New Zealand, where, as a guide. I'm expected often to take a quality photo for my client of what is often their largest trout ever. Please understand that this is a guideline only and if you pay attention to the trout in question, it may show signs of needing to released immediately - in which case you need to consider taking a picture in or under the water. Stress in fish (obvious to the trained eye) can show in color change, excessive gasping or even bleeding. Please release these fish asap. Play them hard and they'll swim away hard.
Kind regards, Mike.

Mike you are very lucky to have wild fish that size some of the ones you have showed over the years I have watched you catch are 15 -20 years old unless your growth rates are different from what I understand them to be in wild fish they should be handled very carefully which I have applauded you for others should follow that example.

Good knowledgeable information from an expert Angler! There are plenty out there who need the schooling, and wish more people would respect the health of the fish. Thanks for the Post Mike, always enjoy your videos!

Well done. I’ve almost stopped taking pictures altogether. Maybe a quick one for some of the larger catches. Cheers.

Hi Mike, love your work & that of Trippin' on Trout & Trout Hunting NZ! I'm an Aussie (import) mainlander and likely will be looking for a day or two guidance to get me started on a 3 week Trout Bum trip around March next year. Tried to get over a few time the past 2 years but lockdown & covid! I particularly like your focus on caring for these gorgeous animals that give us so much pleasure. I generally fish the high country, Thredbo or south west Tasmania, Styx, Weld, Russell & Tyenna fastwater streams. I catch enough to keep me hooked but not a world class caster. Enough nonsense for now; hope to see you around February - March 2023 after some casting practice!✌👍

@@mikefsher I'm still coming over butt it may be 2023 / 4 I'll contact you as soon as I have a firm date. Work is not giving me much free time, I'm close to retiring so need to get as much spending $ before I pull the plug! A trip on the water with you is near the top of the list! 💪✌

With modern tippet diameter I am still surprised that fly anglers are still using 4lb tippet line. I encourage our club members to use 6lb strength. In NZ there are rivers I have had to use 8lb to get the fish in quickly to reduce the lactic acid build up. Great information that I hope viewers will encourage other fly anglers to follow.

A couple of things that have come up here in the US is we now typically use Rubber nets like those sold by fishpond that help protect the slime coating on fish, also gas the added advantage of pretty much being impossible to get your flies stuck/tangled in. A few years back Simms worked with the Montana State University and US Fish and Wildlife to figure out the best material to use on some of their gloves to help protect the fish however for whatever reason that didn't last long and as far as I know they do not manufacture any of their current line with this silicone like material...one guide and author I know who frequently guides a high pressure system now recommends using Nitrile examination gloves... another mention when releasing a tired fish is watch out for potential predators looking for an easy meal...it isn't as frequent here in the States but I remember Andrew Harding once kicking away a hungry Eel but other concerns could be Bear or Birds but if you have a Bear around you have Larger concerns...final note, while not a direct relation ensure your gear is thoughoughly clean and dry between trips to avoid potential contamination of invasive species or diseases into water systems. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-N_8GHmf6c_I.html

I use a floating net , I hold them in deep water the net floats and they sit relaxed in the bottom calm as . Took a bit to get the right net to do the job and make it neat but happy with it now and as I say the fish just sit in the bottom like a holding pen until I get my BARBLESS hook out It’s just easier

I'll add knotless rubber net and a fair warning to all the fishermen that think it's impossible to make a fish take unless ur leader is 0.06. that's not the case and obv if you are going to play a 4-5 kilo trout hard u need some substance in your leader. Exept that do as told here and kill less fish because of bad handling...

Do not grab the tail and lift the fish vertically above water, can easily damage the spine.
