I absolutely love this project~!! I've been wanting to build full-scale barrister bookcases for years, but I really don't have anywhere to put them in our current house. I could definitely find a place for the mini version. Fantastic job on these~!!

Great work. Thank you for your explanations, especially the heads up on proportional grain size. Not sure I would have thought about that until it was too late.

I've always wanted a barrister bookcase. I never realized I also wanted one in miniature size as well.

That's a smart looking unit. I've watched the original build video a couple of times, it was satisfying to see it all come together. Thanks for going to the trouble of making the video. All the best from England

Magnets are not needed here at all. As the door slightly tilts forward, this is not a bug but a feature.

Love this project! Over the yrs, you’ve built several smaller scale projects.... what is it about working with smaller proportions that appeals to you? I’m in the process of moving but once I’m settled in, I will be getting these plans!

Thanks Andrew! There’s a few reasons. It’s a new and different type of challenge. Errors can be magnified on smaller projects so it can really keep you honest and humble at times. They also require a lot less material which is cheaper, especially if the project isn’t for a paying customer. Lastly, they don’t take up much room!

Awesome build :) do you happen to know, could the plans be used as a rough guide to build a full-scale model (assuming everything was properly scaled & in proportion)? Or would a full size model require some sort of stiffening structure?

You glossed over the detail regarding the dowls on each end of the glass door that fit into each groove. What I'd like to know is HOW DID YOU GET THE DOOR INSTALLED INTO THE GROOVES? I have two doors that the dowl broke. Replacing each dowl is an easy fix. Reinstalling the doors after the fix is not possible because the grooves do not run all the way to the edge. If there's a trick to this endeavor, please share.

Hi. The actually build video should show me installing the doors. In this video, go to the 7 minute mark. There I discuss how the back panel is two pieces. The top smaller part is not glued in place. It is nailed to the cabinet after the door is slid on from the back. If any issues with the door arise (such as the situation you may be in), then you can pull that smaller back panel off and access the door or reinstall it. Not all barrister bookcases will be like this though. Some might be. But it’s not necessarily a standard.

@@parillaworks Thank you for your quick response. I can see that your groove runs all the way to the backend. Mine does not. The groove stops short about 3/4 of an inch to an inch away from the back, which would explain why the back of my case is a full piece. O'well. It was purchased in January 1993, so who knows what they did almost 30 years ago!

Dude you do amazing work and the explanations are great. The hardest part about watching this video is the sound which has white noise at a high enough level to be annoying. Get yoself a better mic (or something, I don't know much about audio) and this could be such a great channel!

I appreciate it! Totally agree. The first 2 or 3 clips in this video were fine but something happened to my mic, maybe a weak battery or it died altogether and reverted to the camera mic. When I went to edit I had to raise those other clips way high and added a lot of noise. Thanks for the comment!

@@parillaworks hey no worries dude. Love the design and execution, and really appreciate you stepping through the thought process of the side grain and the nail on the back

Any possibility of a maximum barrister bookcase? Like 20X scale? Would be great to store cars in or something like that.

I’m looking into it. Trying to find a competent lawyer to cover any liability issues I may run into. 🙃

Just found your video and it is awesome. Do you have the inside dimensions of one of the boxes?
@parillaworks
@parillaworks 3 года назад
Thanks! Each box roughly has a usable space of 11”L x 4.25”H x 4”D. The inside height is taller but the door takes up space when opened. Let me know if you have any other questions!

What if you wanted to double the size. Can it be done the same way with the wood grain
@parillaworks
@parillaworks 3 года назад
If you're referring to the quarter sawn material, yes just add more strips. If you're referring to the back panel, I would probably just use nails over the wider span. You could also use plywood and glue it in place.

It would be nice for larger displays to be sitting in these. I would want glass inserts 5 sides that will be a challenge
