The Airbus A220 is one of the most talked-about airliners today.
The small narrowbody is a clean-sheet design built to the modern standards of passenger aviation. Like the Boeing 717, the Airbus A220 started off with a different name and a different manufacturer; it’s still commonly referred to as the Bombardier CSeries, which consisted of the smaller CS100 and the larger CS300. The rebrand, in short, was born from an attempt by Boeing to thwart negotiations between Delta Air Lines and Bombardier in 2017. Already strapped for cash, Bombardier entered a partnership with Airbus, where the former exited the now “A220 program” in 2020.
Today, the Airbus A220 competes with both generations of the Embraer E190 and E195, all of whom fill markets served by the 717, and smaller A320 and 737 Next Generation models. Composite/aluminum construction, as well as the dedicated Pratt & Whitney PW1500G engines, aid in its fuel efficiency as airlines prioritize sustainability. On the inside, the A220 offers large overhead bins, with economy seats wider than those of any other narrowbody, at nearly 19 in / 48 cm across.
As of May 2024, there are more than 300 frames in service with 19 airlines across both variants. So the story of the A220 is far from over, as many believe it’ll serve as the new gold standard for narrowbody transport.
