So I know it sounds bad, but it really isn't, Toby is the most loyal loving dog I have ever owned.
But he, and his breed are not with out issues....

Sadly, shortly after this video was shot, Toby was diagnosed with a tumor on his little heart, and he had to be put to sleep. He was a fantastic little dog, and in all honesty, I highly recommend the breed despite poking fun at them.

N Carlton We're so sorry for your loss. They give us so much love we're so lucky to have them with us for what ever amount of time. We have a second Cairn he's now 12 years old and his older brother passed a while back we also had a Norfolk Terrier that lived to be an older dog, she was a sweetie pie. Once you adopt them into your family they are with you for life and only make it better.

My cairn loves kids, he hasn’t been around them too much but when he sees a kid or baby in a park he is obsessed. We have a Cairn too. He's cuddling on my lap as I write this. Our little guy loves kids, particularly little kids. That said, we don't have any, and I don't know how he'd handle sustained abuse from a kid, so I can't ever see leaving him alone with a kid. I would add that Cairns absolutely demand to be a part of your daily life. They're not the sort of dog to lay in a corner lazily for most of the day. They do great when they have a job to do with you and a routine they can recognize.
@JimsEquipmentShed
@JimsEquipmentShed 6 лет назад
Toby was never abused by a kid, but he hated them getting into his face. Maybe it was just him, Toby had a few odd issues that may have made him a unique character of the breed. 100% agree on them needing routine, Toby was our alarm clock, and since his passing, our scheduled (that was maintained by him apparently) Has not been the same since. The thing we notice the most is the deafening silence. Toby was on alert for practically everything. Our Yorkie Ted only alerts on things like bears. I miss my morning wake up kiss, every morning at 5:30 + or - six seconds, on the dot. Toby kept it all running, its only been a week, and we know our lives will never be the same. Give yours an extra hug Matt.

I know the feeling all too well. Our 14 year old cairn died over a year ago. I swore that I would never get another dog because it was just too painful to let one go. Ailene Wright Their personality’s are really fantastic, and I don’t think I could have found a more fiercely loyal dog if I tried. When we got our little lady she had Knots all over her from trying to stop her barking and chewing she rode home in my lap shivering from fear, at that time we had 3 other dogs a male cocker and 2 mixed breed Mini Dachshunds she was timid at first. I was in our fenced back yard, we live in a small rural town with a huge back yard, one day her tial stood straight up and started running laps around the yard. guess she finally realized she wasn't caged anymore. she's been with us for about 9 years now and is as spoiled as any dog ever was.

I downsized after the loss of my Labrador. My little Cairn Midge is a delight and although somewhat “independent” has learned recall when off lead better than any dog I know. She loves everyone but her passion is for children. She was easy as a puppy and accepted being alone at night from the outset, great in the car, bold, funny and endlessly entertaining. You need to be firm but kind with them and they will be your best pal ever.
@JimsEquipmentShed
@JimsEquipmentShed 5 лет назад
100% agree, they are a solid little dog, and actually the independence is what I look for in a terrier, I want a dog that can think for itself. Toby had trouble with recall, and children that he didn't know, but I suspect that was just his personality. He too was alone from the start, and still remained primary when we got our Yorkie. I can't even begin to tell you how much we miss Toby, his heart condition caught us by total surprise, I thought he was just slowing down because he was getting older.

Awww. My Grandparents had this Cairn and when he was 15 he was just a grouchy, angry, little dog. He had this special corner of the house he didn't want anyone to go in. So one day my 1 year old Sister crawls into his corner and just sits on him. He didn't bite her, he didn't growl or bark or snap at her. He just sat there patiently and super irritated. He knew she was a baby, and just put up with the ultimate injustice. So I think Cairns are great with kids. Even grumpy old ones are still kind to them.
@JimsEquipmentShed
@JimsEquipmentShed 6 лет назад
Toby was good up to a point, and then, he would just snap. It didn't happen often, (Only about three times in total) so it was always a shock, but it was not with out warning. And once he warned you, you really needed to stay away from him after that. He wouldn't bite, but he would hit open mouthed like a shark, and then chase you out of his zone. Once the offender backed off, he was back to happy Toby, and wanted to play again. He nailed my grandson once, and after that my grandson knew how far he could push him before Toby was done with his BS. They grew up together, and only had that one incident despite Toby taking a bunch of thumping from Daniel. Toby could take a hit with a toy car like a champ, but if you put your face into his, there was trouble.

Our first Cairn was so sweet and the first week we had him I taught him to shake hands, sit, lay down and he was potty trained all in the first week it was all done with reward and repetition. He was very smart never mean and got along with everyone and animals unless they were mice, squirrel... he was ideal. Our Cairn we have now is very sweet with us and people who come to the house and he's very smart and easy to train with the same methods, but he does not want to share us with other animals. I would never leave my dog alone with anyone it's not him I don't trust it's what some one might do to him to make him bite. When I was a little girl a boy from my school came into our yard and was hurting me. The boy was bit because my little dog named Tiny was trying to stop him, my parents were sued and were forced to hand Tiny over to the authorities, and he had to be put down. He was a little Boston Terrier and very loving after that I never will leave any pet alone with anyone other than family. Anyone who thinks they need to hit or be hard on a dog is mistreating the animal and will end up ruining them.

In our case, Toby was great with other dogs, but not great with kids. He was a little bit unpredictable in that respect. My grandson managed him, but he also knew Toby’s triggers. Getting into Toby’s face at all, was a declaration of war, and he was prepared to fight you to the death. Not great if a little kid is trying to kiss him in the nose…. So we actively had to warn people to stay out of his face, because he would go from super friendly, to had to be picked up and restrained kinda scary…..

I have two. Total cuddlers. Loves bathing, being clean and they must wear clothes. Maybe it works like a thunder coat but mine begged for clothes at the pet store at 10 weeks. Trying to dress themselves. Yesterday I tried letting them run around naked so they got to the facemask and tried dressing themselves. About eight months old and still using pee pads. Maybe because of weather but I've never taken so long to house train for outside potty breaks. If I remove the pads they will go on the pads spot on the floor before letting me know they need a walk.

The little girl is so sneaky and you may find her on top of the table or hiding chewing on something that seems like it would have been impossible to reach. The boy is so stubborn. They both love playing fetch so I try to keep them occupied when they are in high energy mode. They are so darn cute and, cuddly and lovable, snuggles all the time. I can't be mad. I just have to kiss them. Maybe that's why they aren't trained . They have the art of looking at you like a sad child with a bottom lip and wanting a hug and getting away with stuff. One other strange thing. They prefer carrots, cabbage, lettuce over meat or pet food. They beg when I make salad. Don't eat well unless I mix raw chopped cabbage and carrots with just a little meat . Given a choice between a carrot or beef stick, they choose carrot everytime. I have to make sure raw potatoes are well out of reach. Those are bad for them but they try to get them

@@fondoftheduh Interesting food choices, Toby used to spit carrots out. He wasn't much of a veggie guy. His thing was chasing the sprinkler in the summer, he would do it for hours. Sometimes I'd have to shut it down so he would stop and come in to eat. Terriers are super focused at what ever they do.

My Cairn Terrier is also named Toby and he is that same color and everything! He does well around children for the most part, unless they’re being brats and poking at him and stuff, then he gets irritated. He’s a very sweet and playful little dog, we’ve had him for almost a year now! He doesn’t like other dogs, he barks at them whenever he sees one. He also likes hunting lizards, they’re pretty common here and whenever he sees one in the backyard he chases after it and gets leaves stuck in his fur from searching for them in the bushes. He’s such a cute dog!

We miss out Toby every day. That personality will be missed forever. Toby was a crazy barker, we could never get him to jack it down a notch. He barked at leaves, trees, individual blades of grass. Today my beautiful black brindle would've been 16. Sadly she passed away May 29, 2018. About six weeks shy of her 16th birthday. My husband and I have had about eight different breed dogs between us. She was by far the most intelligent, brave, loyal and all around best dog we've ever had. She never once barked at a child in her entire life. As she was super docile around children. She would bark at people or dogs. Sorry for both of your losses. We're still grieving. She was very stubborn! However I loved everything about her. We have a little Chihuahua/terrier mix that's extremely smart and adorable. But when I'm ready to get another dog one day, it will definitely be another Cairn. ❤

Thank you, I know my heart is still broken. Funny thing, I read you wanted a Yorkie. My husband thought I wanted one too. However I wanted a similar look but a little bigger and tough. She was exactly that. I didn't know much about the breed. However when I read about it, the description fit to a tee of what I was looking for in a dog. That's why I want the same dog when I'm ready. Cici was amazing. We never knew such heartbreak until the day she was gone and we've both have lost many other dogs and family members.

When I first started dating my girlfriend, she had a Yorkie (Lucy) and pretty quickly, I realized how tough they were. After I married her 'Mom', Lucy pretty much bonded solid with me. She started off as a city dog, but became a bad assed country dog, constant tractor companion, and hiking buddy. After she passed, I really wanted another one. We found Toby by accident, he was a pet shop pup, and probably the cutest dog on the planet. So we gave up on our search for a yorkie, and I'm really glad we did. Despite my pokes at the breed, I think the Cairn is a fantastic dog, they don't take crap from anyone, and are very rugged. Most of all, I miss his morning happiness. Dogs don't have to live as long as we do, as the don't make the mistakes humans do, so their lives are plenty long for them.

If they got down into his face, he would lunge at them, and if they ran, he went into predator mode. I had to puck him up until he "switched off", from what I'm hearing from everyone else in the comments, it seems like I might have just had a partial nut case on my hands. My Carin, Davey, was wonderful with a one and a half year old & thru the years. She would try to ride him and pull on his ears, he tolerated everything. When he had enough he simply walked away, he never hurt her. They do love to play and need lots of exercise. Awesome guard dog too. The teeth of a German Shepherd in the mouth of a terrier. I drove a truck for many years, 2 years of it across the 401 through Toronto to Battawa. He was a natural born goalie. I would kick hunks of ice and he would jump on them and trap them and then wait for the next one. He would bound around in the snow until he fell over, his little paws packed with ice crystals. In the summertime he loved soccer. I finally bought him a regulation size soccer ball, and again he played goalie. Sometimes he would run all around the yard "dribbling" with his nose. He played with every dog we met at truck stops. He loved everyone. He also started grinning, something I had not seen since I was a kid and we had a dog that did it. He would grin on command, but whenever he was happy.. as then, he would lay his ears flat on his head, and kids would be terrified! When I have time for a dog again I will definitely get another Carin or Carin mix. I bought David but I will get a rescue somehow next time. I definitely will get right on the training early though. David definitely was stubborn and definitely had me wrapped around his paws. Oh, you don't speak "Scottish" , it would be Gaelic. I am half Irish and half Scottish right down the middle. My wife wants to save the universe (she doesn’t even swat flys), so I had to train her to let the dog do it’s work with out interruption. She had a tendency to want to let the mice get away. (Because they are cute….) yea, I married a city girl…. ;-)

@@JimsEquipmentShed As newly retired, I am looking for a small dog that is a super low shedder that could hang out in the home workshop with me during the day with me while I piddle on my equipment and then stay in the house at night. I told the wife we either needed to get an outdoor only cat or a vermin terrier dog at this new place we bought. When looking up best “ratting” dogs, Cairn breed was #2 on list of best breed for rat hunting behind the Rat Terrier breed itself; nothing against the Rat Terrier, but know they have a shedding coat unlike a Cairn and Yorkie. My wife’s only concern was that the dog not bring his “mice hunting trophies” in the house Lol.

The Murph is Cairn mixed. Same temperament. Has to absolutely get a one mile walk everyday. He's a very cool independent Mutt. He hates cats motorcycles and male dogs and moles mice etc. Absolutely loves when people stop by. He's ridiculous crazy and funny. He's my second Terrier Mutt. I'm as crazy as a Terrier so it works out. Mom just rescued a female six pound Pure Yorkie. OMG😳😳

I have a cairn corgi mix. He will be 13 in may. He’s had many issues with his joints and major back surgery, but other than that he is still as energetic and playful as he was when he was 8 months old. I grew up with boxers all my life, so his temperament was definitely an adjustment but I absolutely love him. He’s so intelligent and empathetic. But I don’t think I will be getting another until later in life. I was 13 when we got him just for reference. He’s a one person kind of lad and requires A LOT of attention and mental stimulation which can make traveling/work difficult. He’s great with everyone but not kids. He gets along well with my two boxers but will get into a brawl or two every year. Definitely the alpha of the house lol On walks he keeps to himself when he sees other dogs, but he is not good with interacting with them if he hasn’t met them before. Also, we found his sister who lives just down the road from us a couple years ago but they could care less about each others prescience which is quite hilarious but also a bit of a bummer but hey! Gotta respect them and their boundaries.

They have a very specific set of rules they seem to follow. I really miss Toby, he was also a one person dog, but man was he lovable to me. I miss waking up to Toby kisses. Ted on the other hand, all business. He acts like it’s a hardship if you pet him too much. He’s like a cat.

You shouldn't have said "I wouldn't have another Cairn again" in front of your adorable puppy. He heard it. It pained me deeply. I can never say something like that in front of my beloved terrier. They feel everything. They know everything. I hope you cherish him more now . . . Sorry for your loss.

marimusicvideos He knew, and understood that I was playing with him. Toby was always a good sport, and don’t worry, he knew I loved him. If anything I expected the Yorkie comment to get more flack. Toby really was not good with little kids though, that was no joke.

My sweet baby passed away a few months ago and my heart continues to desire her cuddles. She was 16 years old and came to us as a rescued when she was 8 😢💔 I thought perhaps because she was an older dog she had such a sassy personality. I need another beautiful white cairn terrier

They definitely have “their own way” about them. Highly intelligent dog. When I bring mine to the dog park, he knows I don’t want him to go in the mud puddles ( wife yells at me for dirty car). So what does he do? He waits when I’m not looking or to far away and sits in the mud puddle. That’s a Carin Terrier! If you socialize them when their young they like other dogs and people (mine loves mailmen and tries to hop in their delivery trucks. They will chase, with a passion, little rodents(like a squirrel) or bunny rabbits and nothing you say or do will stop them. They are beautiful dogs, you just have to learn to live with each other!

Brady Dog Toby’s thing was the sprinkler. It that got turned on, he would run through the water until it got dark out. I was actually surprised when we were informed of his heart condition. Dying wasn’t slowing him down a bit. He loved doing that.

Tilly is 7 yo & Maggie is 3 yo. Everything is on their terms. I learnt that many years ago when I had my first Cairns. You can use that to your advantage, until they work out what you're doing, then you have to change your 'plan' again. So very smart and so very stubborn. Maggie won't play ball, she'll fetch it, drop it at my feet and walk away. Tilly loves to play ball, if I place it on the ground then kick it really hard, she blocks it. I have never got it past her yet. Bottom line? Very clever, very stubborn, very snack orientated, very faithful. The clowns of the dog world.

Charles was our (my sister's present for Xmas) Cairn Terrier Yorkie mix (was REALLY hyper and nearly destroyed my parents bathroom scratching at the door) was not only a good and playful boy, he also did some good work before we move. He would dig up moles on walks and squirrels were always ON SIGHT. He was almost 15 when he died and it took months to get used to NOT having a good fluffy boi run up to me at my parents door. Now my sister adopted a Jack Russel who like Charles before, things socks are play things

Toby had a rough time, two cruciate ligament surgeries took up a couple of years on him. But it never slowed him down, we miss him every day. He left most of the hunting up to our Yorkie, Toby only stepped in when something was too Big for Ted to handle, he did his job well.

I have a Cairn named Tobs too. Will be 15 soon. He is nothing but sweet to anyone he meets. He's a social butterfly. I will say though, he is independent. Sometimes he wants lap time, sometimes he lays in his bed. He always loves to come with me to my woodshop and go to the lake. He still gets the zoomies now and then too which is awesome for his age.
