I love how they handled this with the deaf girl. She can't hear the sound like the others can, but she sees the fear and despair in her parents faces, then turns around to see the kid with the toy she gave him, allowing her to put the pieces together. I can't imagine the guilt she must've felt.
actually you can imagine the guilt she felt because its a literal plot point in the movie she feels its her fault and her dad doesn't love her that is why before lee sacrifices himself to save his kids he signs "i love you i have always loved you"
This scene is underrated. When the girls point of view is shown everything is silent because she is deaf. She has absolutely no idea what's wrong and only realises after her dad runs past her and she sees her brother Its subtle but its brilliant.
@@Phoebegrace056 that wasn't what got me. What got me is they take the toy and the batteries put them on the counter... but then LEAVE expecting their kid to just walk away without them. Even if the girl hadn't given it to him any kid his age would take the toy and the batteries without a second thought. So stupid.
@@HighKingOfSkyrim37 Exactly lol. Also why in the world would they even leave perfectly good working batteries behind when they're living in an apocalyptic world where supplies are not easy to find??? makes no sense!!
I read once that the Alpha Male in a Wolf pack always is at the end or last during excursions to make sure the pack stays uniformed and in-line throughout the trek/journey. Their line of sight from the end is crucial to eye and spot potential dangers from left to right and especially from behind. The next one in rank after him is at front because he knows just enough to lead, when to veer the pack, stop for danger etc.. but the Alpha is responsible for the ENTIRE clan. I take it John Krasinski didn't get that memo....
The baby child should've been held. The other kid was fine. The order should've been (From first to last): Mother holding baby, deaf daughter (She could also hold da baby), son, and then the father. Not: Father, Mother, son, deaf daughter, baby.
Hey I just realized that the dad's name is Lee just like Lee in the walking dead game from telltales like why does every dad or dude in a apocalypse must be named Lee
Btw, the monsters don't eat anything, since they live in space because they're aliens, sound doesn't travel in space so hey hate loud noises. You can tell they don't eat what they kill because in the forest, the old man's wife had her organs leaking but she wasn't eaten, just brutally murdered
Well some animals have their young ones behind the pack so maybe it's the same? Edit: for the ppl who are bashing me about this if you watch a documentary about big cats they walk and the little cubs are behind them and honesty *it's not a fkin big deal* and also i didn't mean that we are animals i just meant that they were copying that idea
The worst part about this scene is how the family has to hold in all their emotions. They can't cry or scream. Imagine witnessing your child be brutally murdered in front of you and you have to stay completely silent.
Can we just appreciate how Lee immediately without batting an eye started running towards his child to save him despite the horror of knowing whats gonma happen
This is a genius way to set up how much of a threat the monsters are and hence how absolutely crucial the silence is. The moment the toy lit up, Emily's character instantly accepts that the kid is as good as dead. There are no monsters in sight, but the moment sound was made, its already there.
It gives too much away imo. It tells us exactly what the threat is, what the monster looks like and what it will do when it finds you. Fear of the unknown gone right at the start.
@@greenbeangang8303 Fear of the unknown is extremely effective, but it's not the only way to go with horror. With a film like this, you needed the set-up from the start to create the tension: every and any sound can get you instantly killed by a scary monster. Without showing the consequences, you wouldn't be so nervous throughout stuff like the birth scene.
well its kinda her fault anyway for leaving the smallest vulnerable child in the back where he can easily be distracted and not watched over. he is a _child._ the reason why he fell so far behind was because he stopped in order to take the toy out of his bag. if he was in the middle, they couldve prevented him from doing so by either keeping him on pace or yeeting the toy once he turned it on. not to mention setting him up to fail by giving him batteries for a toy that emits loud noises in the first place.
@@MasterOfTruck If I'm not mistaken, when the kid first finds the toy he is told it's too loud and thus dangerous. The dad then removes the batteries and places them on a nearby shelf so there would be less chance of an accident. The sister then grabbed the toy (without the batteries) and gave it to her brother who then proceeded to grab the batteries and put them back in the toy without his parents or siblings knowing which then resulted in this scene. I agree with everyone else here that having such a young child walk behind everyone is stupid in this situation (all children should have been between mom and dad), but overall the dad did take precautions when he saw the toy to prevent an issue from occuring because of it.
Probably the best villain introduction in a horror movie. It shows how genuinely strong and fast they are, whilst at the same time not making them an omnipotent force. Bravo.
Vestedcrib nah the dad took away the batteries and the toy but the sister gave him the toy without the batteries and the kid put the batteries back into the toy, there are clips of the scene on RU-vid
What I loved most about this scene is how it showed the cruel nature of a "real threat". People always think that because they are kids, or babies... they will be spared. It was made LOUD and clear that only those who obeyed the rules would survive.
@@nurinz8902 no, the sister gave him back the toy rocket without the batteries, but she didn't know that he took the batteries with him and put it inside the toy
Or in a situation like this no battery operated toys or at least take out the batteries. It's only inevitable for a child to push the fancy little buttons on a toy at the worst possible moment.
On the last day of school, my teacher let us watch this movie at school, she told everyone to bring snacks with them, we closed all the curtains in the class so the room was dark and cold as hell, she let us watch and chill the whole day. Damn what a day
in my college, movies used to screened every Friday and they closed the curtains and all but we weren't allowed to snack so it wasn't fun and I felt sleepy asf
@@atlantabaruah ahh movie noon is what we called it in our school But we would give the teacher 4 or 5 dollars for each student and we would sit down and watch The movie drinking Pepsi and eating KFC
Well, when I was in 7th grade, we watched the original live action Transformers movie in my technology class. And I believe the following year, we watched Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. And when I was in 11th grade, we watched Transformers: Dark of the Moon in my science class. Everybody was amazed with how much I knew the characters, and about the war.
@@Bennacho so it was the last day of school so we didn’t learn anything, and cuz my school is a lil different, we stay in 1 class and teachers of different subjects come in and teach us, and our class’ teacher (she doesn’t teach anything, she just manage the class) told other teachers to let us watch the movie instead of just sitting and talking with each other and they agreed, ofc we had lunch and stuffs but the majority of the day we watched the movies, we also watched some other movies too
This scene sets up the greatest strengths of the parents. 1. Evelyn is able to stop herself screaming despite knowing her son is going to die. She does this again later in the movie while giving birth. Incredible personal strength. 2. Lee runs towards his son putting himself in danger because he would die to protect them. He does this again later to save the other kids by shouting to get the monsters attention.
@@mahrizhossain4308 So you would risk everyones life just to make sure a kid is safe, hehe, can't even let one kid die to let the others live, you don't have the balls.
What's really heart breaking in this scene is Emily Blunt's stellar reaction in the situation. Her face goes from abject terror, straight to mourning because she knows her husband isn't going to make it to their son in time, and that, though he only died at the end of the clip, he was dead the moment that shuttle went off. You kind of see the same look on his father's face as he's running to him; a determined demeanor that becomes resigned, with every step, that the effort he's making to save his son is more than likely futile.
Gotta make sure the camera getting this man 😂 the kids comes second. He ain’t getting any awards for saving him, now that scene shot of him turning? That’s where the moneys at
It’s called shock, he was shocked when he heard the noise because he has associated noise with death in this world. Tbf if he didn’t turn slowly and started running right away they both would have died.
When I first played this movie, I thought it would be boring cause there was no dialogue, but in the middle of the story, it was very thrilling. this is one of my favorite movies😍
I love how to goes to the deaf point if hearing as she tries to understand why everyone is freaking out and then her face of terror when she reliazes what'a happening
Even sadder considering if she could hear, or if someone else was in her position, they could have ran and saved the boy in time. But because she couldn’t hear, she didn’t take any action. Sad but great detail
@@bronze8721 In all honesty even from the position she's standing I don't think anyone of them would have been able to get to the kid in time at least not enough to grab the toy and throw it far enough away to lure the creatures away and then grab him to run, cause by the time you reach him the creature is right on top of of you
The mother blames herself the most. When she said near the end of the movie “I was carrying a bag but my hands were free. I should’ve carried him” that made me tear up.
It was the girls fault for giving the toy to the kid when her dad already Said no and took it from him, she defied her father and couldn't deal with the consequences so hated his father for this, typical 2000 born white girl
People do that in real life it's hard unrealistic. People's guards aren't up 24/7 and since they hadn't had issues in 7 days they are bound to slack for a little bit. Compare that with the fact that their daughter was supposed to be with the little boy they assumed he would be alright.
He was pretty young. This is a mistake on the parents' part. Walk behind the damn group, so you see your kids better. Let alone in an apocalyptic event 🗿
One of the most chilling opening death scenes ever. Just the reactions on the faces of his family says it all. They knew he was a goner and they're just watching and waiting for the inevitable to occur.
Clearly the monster knew the toy was unsuitable for his age and just wanted to return it to the shop they bought it from.... But clearly took the kid aswell.
We need animation remake of this scene where family is in terror than "monster" jumps out, land harmlessly, put glasses on and start explaining that this toy is too noisy and too blinking so it overstimulates child of this age and they can swap it for free than "monster" leaves taking toy and coupon for other stuff in it's place
Main reason this specific part of the movie is so good, is because most movies don't make kid's deaths happpen so much (or at least its not shown), because its by far the worst case scenario for anyone to live through. But to be fair, who in their right mind will have a family walk, AND PUT THE YOUNGEST KID IN THE BACK OF THE LINE LIKE 15 METERS AWAY !? ESPECIALLY IN A WORLD FILLED WITH HUMAN EATING ALIENS !
@@jake_thefox4675 I absolutely agree that the kid shouldn't have been behind everyone else, but still, how incredibly smart should You be to NOT turn on a sound emitter when there are monsters that kill anything that makes sound? I am probably slightly lower than average, but the thought of blasting some heavy metal when there are several murder machines that attack anything that makes sound would never cross my mind.
There is some strategy to it. The children are most likely to cause noise and pull attention, keeping them at the tail and wings of the group ensures anything attacking them doesn't end up in the center of the formation and catch others in collateral. Doubtful that the parents planned this, given how evidently uncaring it can be.
Yeah no doubt he was like on the other side of the bridge and had to run a football field length to reach him , meanwhile what about the fathers running footsteps on the bridge?
It’s a great scene and everything, but of course it doesn’t make sense to leave the youngest in the back . Even when not in a world with killer aliens hypersensitive to sound, if you’re on a walk with a small kid you keep your eyes on em all the time.
@@car3ss thats honestly just the basics of being a parent. why would you _ever_ want your small child walking behind you when you cant keep an eye on them? the part that should be emphasized is that in a situation involving hypersensitive hearing aliens that kills you for making too much noise, they gave a child batteries for a toy that lights up and emits loud noises. they were practically setting him up to fail.
John Krasinski is a really good director, it's already relatively silent with their body language and their movement, but giving us the deaf girl's POV as well as her hearing, giving as well as showing her emotions: what happened? Why is everyone looking like that? Is there danger? Why is the dad running towards me, etc, and the brilliant switch to sound at the right moment just made this even better
kb 94 In their defence, they're distracted caring for the other child who is very sick. One distraction, one mistake, and their youngest was gone. That's the movie's source of terror in this scene.
Yep, they always have the kid act older than what they actually are meant to be… in a real situation this would have actually happened (But no one is stupid enough to let the kid be in the back, nor keep a toy)
Yeah because it’s illegal to show a child being directly abused or harmed in films. That’s why we didn’t see his body being ripped apart, just thrown off screen. We know he’s dead but it doesn’t show it.
I remember seeing this teased in the trailer thinking it would be a climatic moment towards the end with a last moment save. Was I ever wrong. This film has guts
The saddest part was the seconds before he died when he held it up with both hands and what is sadder is that he was so young and didn’t know what was happening
At first I was really mad at the kid for putting everyone in danger but I realized this was a parental issue. Your kid just dropped a toy in the pharmacy and your daughter caught it and saved you'll. That would then be the time to ramp up the serious factor and say all kids where we can see you. Yes the daughter is also at fault for circumventing her fathers will in not letting her brother have the toy but the parents should've made sure he didn't pick it back up. But what do they do? Walk off again and leave the kids in the pharmacy to their on devices. And then to not supervise them even further and not have one parent lead and the other tail is foolish and negligent. I would never let my niece or nephew be out of my sight when they're with me. They put way too much trust in children. And to then have a baby in this environment... it's as if they are purposely being irresponsible.
@@shekelman9336 yeah they put the batteries on a counter within easy reach of him and then left him in the shop to come out last, with the batteries right next to him. If you leave a young kid alone within easy reach of something they're not supposed to have there's a 95% chance they'll take it. If anything it would've been better for the movie not to take those steps cause they're so punitive
To be completely fair, it's gotta be a hard situation on the kid emotionally, he's so little and has no social interaction outside of his family, no friends, no sound stimulation and parents that are (rightfully) in constant fear of death, it's normal for anyone under that much stress, nevermind a child to rebel.
I’m not sure about details but it’s probably based on the other death scenes we’ve seen in the movie and the fact you can actually see blood spatter right as it snatched him up.
Well, He was the one who took the batteries after the entire family was gone from that shop so he kinda deserved it, he knew whats gonna happen but he instead just thought about the joy he could have had and took them.
It’s funny because video games are considered a lower art, but their sound design (especially horror games) is often miles above this. #1 in my opinion is Alien Isolation. The sounds for that are so good that they used them mostly unaltered for Audible’s Alien audio dramas.
What I never understood in this movie is why the parents decided to have another baby when they can’t make any noise. The only thing babies do is cry Edit: I wrote this comment a year ago an im still getting replies that repeat each other. Y’all can stop now
@@JangoFett220 No such thing as an accident when you've been married for many yrs and both ppl know the wife's fertile time. Also when birth control is unavailable, you turn to natural family planning. A.K.A tracking your cycle and pulling out.
That's exactly what I thought. My husband said they were probably grief stricken and wanted another one. But that's still stupid bc youre putting everyone's life at risk by having a crying baby around and barely any medical attention.
It was a sad reference in AQP 2 when they show the toy he's playing with in this scene. The dad walked right past it, having no idea that's the toy it would have his child killed.
