On 6-23-23 we finally managed to catch the Newburgh and South Shore Railroad. Their railroad only crosses one road at grade, E 49th st on the south side of Cleveland. Here they work Charter Steel which appears to be their biggest customer. The other roads they cross are all overpasses and underpasses. They are now owned by OmniTrax but they were an independent railroad which opened for business. They were a of the American Steel and Wire Company (US Steel), The line ran from the company's Central Furnaces (the area roughly bounded today by the Cuyahoga River, Interstate 490, and Broadway Avenue) and ran briefly south before crossing the Cuyahoga River at the now-demolished Jefferson Avenue Bridge. The track ran through the company's plant on the west side of the Cuyahoga, and recrossed the river near the now-demolished Clark Avenue Bridge. The line ran south (passing over Campbell Road and under Harvard Avenue) before turning east. After an at-grade crossing of E. 49th Street and the bridging of E. 71st Street, the tracks turned north at E. 76th Street into the company Newburgh Works, terminating at Aetna Road. American Steel and Wire merged with a number of other steel companies to form U.S. Steel in 1901. U.S. Steel consolidated the NSR with another subsidiary railroad, the Bessemer & Lake Erie Railroad, in 1951. Traffic on the road declined significantly after World War II, and largely ceased when U.S. Steel closed its Cuyahoga Works in 1984. The NSR sold 2.2 miles (3.5 km) of its main line to the Cuyahoga Valley Railway, and then closed on June 30, 1986. In July 1986, the track was sold to the Chicago West Pullman Transportation Co., now known as Omnitrax ( Wikipedia credit )
The crew works some covered hoppers, not sure what they'd load in those. Usually foundry sand is in 2 bays... And naturally they have gons as one would expect with a steel mill! This was late on a Friday so after the Charter work they headed east to the yard to tie down at the roundhouse.

Really superlative footage. Scott, you have a knack for capturing the best angles, drone shots and sequence your clips to provide a winning video. Watching this is heartwarming as it offers a great view of a factory and plants, American industry the way it was always meant to be. Thank you for this content, your channel is a rare treasure indeed.

Absolutely Love it! Nice industrial short line, just switchin' back & forth. One of my favorite lokeys too, the old reliable SW's. After 60+ years, still doing what they were meant to do! Thanks Scott...nice video!

That white and blue locomotive at the 14:38 mark looks interesting. Seems like an ex-CN SW1200RS, going by the number board housing on the cab.

That's one hell of a set of bugles the man has. I too was wondering what could be in the covered hoppers, by the brown stain on the roof, could be sand. In the UK foundries use something called Fuller's Earth for casting, probably has a different name in the States.
@beeble2003
@beeble2003 9 месяцев назад
Sand is too heavy to carry in 3-bay hoppers: the hopper would hit max weight at about 2/3 full, so they normally carry it in smaller hoppers. The brown staining is likely just rust. I think fuller's earth is known as bentonite in the US. Could well be that, actually -- I think it's a low-ish density product.

NSR actually has 5 at grade crossings, but 3/5 are out of service, the other crossing of E 49th is also owned by NSR I believe (at least their website shows they own the track there). I love these types of videos though, your vids are some of the best out there!

Great to see that from the air. Years ago I was up and down 49th, Grant, Harvard always looking for N&SS action.Usually just saw a switcher sitting idle some where off Harvard. Never knew there's a turntable too.

I believe at the beginning of the video you will see two yellow / white ish detectors. As the train passes through it. It is detecting for radiation. The hoppers are for Limestone.
@beeble2003
@beeble2003 9 месяцев назад
Charter Steel uses electric arc furnaces, and I don't think those use limestone. They use either calcium oxide (lime) or magnesium oxide to form the slag -- so the hoppers could be carrying one of those.

This facility is not, if I remember is not a foundry. One of the former owners built an EAF and a caster to make billets for the bar, rod and wire mills. Contrary to Wikipedia, the N & SS's east end was at 92nd St. serving what was AS & W's Newburgh Works and Valley Mould and Iron.

I find it interesting that the industry has x-ray cargo scanners for trucks and railcars. I wonder what they ship?
@marka5478
@marka5478 7 месяцев назад
The X-ray scanners are to prevent radioactive materials from being induced into the scrap charge for the EAF.

Like the "3rd rail" oil stain. They must be spending a small fortune keeping this old switcher lubricated.
@littlewingpsc27

I wonder what is leaking so consistently that there is a stain along the tracks across all of the tracks shown in the video.

9:32 Just noticed, as I'm making an HO model of this car. No safety stripes in 2023. What's going on with that?
@ScottTaipaleRail
@ScottTaipaleRail Месяц назад
My guess is they just use that car for in plant moves at Charter Steel but the reporting mark CWP shows to be: Chicago, West Pullman and Southern Railroad; Chicago Rail Link…
@beeble2003
@beeble2003 Месяц назад
@@ScottTaipaleRail I was wondering about internal usage, but I think the FRA rules say that anything that goes across a public or private grade crossing needs reflectors, and that car's taken across a grade crossing. (BTW, your video description say that CWP is now known as Omnitrax, so the reporting mark tallies.)
