A Raisin in the Sun is a play by Lorraine Hansberry that debuted on Broadway in 1959. The film begins the morning before the Mother, Lena Younger, is to receive the insurance payment of $10,000 from the death of her husband Walter Lee Younger. Her son Walter Lee Younger, Jr. as well as the rest of the family eagerly await its arrival for they each have different reasons on how to best use the money. The daughter, Beneatha, wants to use part of it pay for her medical school tuition, the grandson, Travis, wants to have his own room, her daughter in law, Ruth, wants to use it move to a better place, and her son Walter wants to invest in a risky business venture with his friends. Lena wants to help her daughter with her tuition and take the rest to buy a new home in a better neighborhood.
