That is such a smart way to keep your story ideas together! A great way to get inspired when you're feeling low.

I love this idea! I used to save all of my 'shiny new ideas' on my old computer until it crashed and I lost every idea I had. Your story ideas are great!

I love this! Such an interesting way to talk about some of your ideas. I don’t have notecards for any of my ideas. I remember really struggling coming up with an idea for my PhD dissertation (wrote the script first, then the novel)-but I cycled through a bunch of ideas and even though I liked the themes/tropes, the ideas themselves weren’t working and I ended up using a script idea that I’d already been working on and thought I could adapt. And it turned out better than I hoped for! But I guess I don’t constantly have a ton of ideas unless I have some sort of deadline for the current project I’m working on! My YA fantasy short story, CALLER, was published in March 2020 in Prismatica Magazine and it’s a portal fantasy about a queer disabled teen and her wolf companion! I agree about animal companion stories. I always wanted to write about a disabled girl and her wolf companion. Tropes/themes I constantly go back to: enemies to lovers (I think this will end up in the YA horror I’m drafting!), parallel universes (tried to write about this for my PhD dissertation and it didn’t work), time travel in different ways (I have 2 pilots and a novella about this, but I love it), child gets stolen from birth parents, raised by antagonist, and grows up and has to save the world (wrote an Adult fantasy novella with a different take on this than what you described, queried it, got rejected, still love the story). For recurring themes/characters: sibling relationships, friendships, grief, and loss-somehow all these always show up! 🥰

Low Energy, Low Quality?! You got me super exciteeeed! I am now querying a Dystopian Queer novel (debut) and was so meh for some weeks and today I got this idea for a cosy fantasy/magic realism and our vibes are so matching. I do the cards too aha

I love this video! I don't know what it is, but I love hearing other writers talk about their WIPS and ideas. Maybe because dreaming is the most fun part of the process. There quite a few story ideas I want to work on in the future but to name a few: a space opera, an epic fantasy that revolves around dragons (more Eragon than Fourth Wing lmao); I'd also love to write a book that incorporates shonen tropes from anime I grew up on ie Naruto and HunterxHunter.

You said about tea magic - have you read Becky Chambers' A Psalm for the Wild-Built? there's a tea-making monk there which has some great vibes (in fact, all her stuff is great and you should definitely check it out if you haven't already!). There's also the Tea Dragon graphic novels which are great, cosy reads. Love hearing all these ideas and seeing your process behind melding the cards together.

Dude, totally here for the 'darker ideas'! Love the postcard organization. I have a running list of ideas in the back of one of my notebooks, and if I have enough of a start to a certain concept, I just create a new Scrivener doc so that I can go back to it later. It's been working well for me so far. - I'd love to give Sci-Fi another go. I started one a long time ago involving genetic manipulation, complicated family dynamics and architectural hierarchies, but I got in over my head. - I'm also really into anything involving gods finding new ways to maintain their existence (or escape from it). My current WIP touches on this, but like, barely. - Ooh! And one day, I'd love to incorporate my music background into a paranormal/horror story that does NOT involve a band selling their souls to the devil to be famous. I think I could come up with something less obvious.

I can see one of your villain ideas with that big fantasy family saga you don’t have time to write. I have a page in Notion called To be written ideas and that’s where I dump all of my book ideas.

Side note - I Love this concept of using note cards to organize/keep track of your ideas. I’d love to see more- a video of how you use it/how you organize/ how you record them? Whatever you feel inclined to share would be welcome! (I am SO nosy and fascinated with people’s systems for things 😂🤷🏻‍♀️)
@LindsayPuckett
@LindsayPuckett 7 месяцев назад
LOL same I'd love to share more...but that's really it! I just write them down when I get an idea and occasionally flip through them all! If an idea sparks-then great! It's mainly chaos lol

I have a witchy YA Romeo & Juliet retelling finished! I can't share much about it but there are Fae, Witches, Werewolves, DRAGONS! So, excited to revise it. I'm also very interested in cemeteries, and have some ideas about that. I have so many ideas, I think I should do something similar to you, and keep them in a box with cards. Maybe an old library catalog box!

Have you read Daindreth's Assassin? I just started it and it is similar to the bastard child turned assassin. The author posts shorts here on youtube so that's why I gave it a shot. I'm enjoying it so far.

I love love love the "appears weak but is secretly more powerful than the villain" trope that's common in anime and manga. It doubt it would be easy to execute well in writing though.
