My "well akshully" moment before I get your back here on this. While I understand what youre getting at, mics dont have "reach". Its a misconstrued term from a bygone era. The mic doesn't reach out to grab audio and this term is really not used anymore in the industry, since its very misleading. That aside, as I dismount this rather large horse, the mic has sensitivities to frequencies which is what the colors are on the chart, which are a direct result of the construction of the mic being tested in an anechoic chamber. You're spot on with that! The pattern is shaped by the physical construction of the mic, headbasket and the diaphragm itself. The example you used looks hypercardioid/lobar and possibly of some kind of shotgun mic. The spikes you see would be a direct result of the slits in the interference tube or metal work in the headbasket. Very simple. Impossible to do with light and even if you could, since light doesnt stay separated in the real world, it blends with other light, theres literally NO WAY to show this the way this person was getting at. That's just nuts that someone would break your huevos about that. lol Your light examples were a GREAT way of explaining the basics of polar patterns in general. Trying to show the sensitivity of a particular microphone at a particular frequency at a particular direction in a video about broad concepts is lunacy. You did a great job on the video. Nuff said. Oh, and to back you up further, a linear response mic is linear, that doesn't mean better or best, it means it sounds linear, frequency wise, at different angles and may take eq particularly well. Well designed mics may have cleaner polar patterns, but again, by no means makes them "better" or "best". I've dealt with viewers like that too. Mental health issues not being addressed, me thinks. You keep doing you man! Love the work you put in FOR FREE!!!!!!!!!
It's ridiculous lately with rude, nonsensical comments just to spark a " I know more than you" trait, don't get me wrong, I like constructive debate with facts involved, but when it's just to attempt to stir a reaction out of me or to do the "FIRE" to get others to participate, I just send them to the neverland of "Hide user from Channel" so they can just talk to themselves. You are EXTREMELY knowledgeable in all things audio and I for one, appreciate your advice and content.
Your first point is exactly what was bubbling up in my mind when it comes to folks that seek to either straight-up correct or try to "debate" someone presenting information or concepts in a particular way for a particular reason. A lot of these people out themselves immediately for not knowing what they're talking about or not having watched the video the whole way through to fully appreciate and understand the information IN CONTEXT before flying off the handle and trying to prove they know more. Gods, I couldn't imagine stepping into someone else's space with the audacity of trying to tell them they're wrong or that they should make their content in a different way. Especially when it comes to folks who have easily researched and verified education and years, sometimes decades, of practical experience on the topics they're discussing... Then again, we've seen a significant drop in critical thinking, active listening, comprehension skills, and also just common courtesy and manners in the last X years across all generations...
What do you mean I’m wasting your time regurgitating other people’s ideas and copying and pasting. This is my 100% original thought: “For Episode 22 I'm going to address something that's irritated me for years on this channel - debating viewers in the comments. If you have experience in sound or point out something I said incorrectly, fair enough, but copying and pasting talking points from a website when you don't understand something and ask for clarification is annoying. Second I'm going to share 3 tricks boom operators can use to increase their microphone movement and precision.”
Hi, I don't understand or, therefore, like your videos. But I'll continue to watch small snippets of them and tell you how I think you're wrong as if you don't make a living from the information that you have so graciously shared with us. Not because I'm an expert, quite the opposite. But because that's what I like doing. When I get into someone's head who is just as knowledgeable but less confident than you, and make them second guess themselves, I get a mountain of validation from it. I can feel like my hack-job, hip-shot thoughts and research are on par with, or better than, legitimate experts and professionals. Cheers from whatever screen in whatever parental basement that I am glued to for dopamine.
That was an elaborate way to vent the frustration. Instinctively I'd write "you got too invested there", but then again, your level of interaction with the comments is quite a precious resource, too. (I am still thankful for that detailed explanation of those perceived mic selfnoise oddities. On that thought, would you rather overhead a pc desk with an NT1 or a (Deity) shotgunmic in a treated studio environment? I've been jumping between the two, and it's fumny how each of themdoes some small thing better - like the shotgunmic picking up more accurately the small details & minutiae in the voice, while the NT1 sounds just a bit more "sitting in the room with that person and getting all the warmth of it"...)
S-Mic 2 or 3? I really like the 3 a lot. Personally, at a desk, I'd go Shotgun over the NT1 because I'd put it out of frame and get more rejection off the monitor. That's just me though.
I thought the use of a light source to illustrate polar patterns was very innovative. Especially nice that the three dimensional nature of polar patterns becomes so obvious compared to the usual two dimensional diagrams. At least some of us appreciate your efforts!
I’m sorry you had to deal with this, but so much wisdom in your rant here that I really enjoyed it. Pure “sound advice from a pro sound guy” and I’m loving it.
For all the manufacturers watching these I hope to see a tactical boom pole laser pointer attachment quick release that can sit in between the microphone and the boom and be triggered remotely. Haha although it would still be a cool product.
I see your points and they are valid but don’t let them ruin it for the rest of us ..I happen to like your channel and I want to learn from a more experienced individual as yourself and others . For some it takes time to get a better understanding of each other and others are just playing around wasting time , for me it’s crucial because I wanna get better at things related to film videography etc . The other day I asked about what inputs and outputs are in recorder and you didn’t understand that the question is just as it is . I don’t know what inputs and outputs are and their purpose I just know u plug things into them. When I plug a xlr cable with boom mic into a recorder I don’t know what’s it’s called I’m plugging it into , I just know to plug it in . I don’t know if that’s considered an input I’m plugging it into or an output I’m plugging it into . Simple as that
First of all…. In the beginning at that episode I was think, where will we go with this… I had never thinking on that it’s actually very the same way to see it with lights. Just that should be enough to see that you are clever enough for this…. Internet is good…. But it’s also make many persons to believe that they have big knowledge only because they have see and listen at some videos. When it’s comes to sound and also other arts it’s som many parameters for a sound to be at a certain way. It’s more than just the gear it self. People forget the value in longtime experience that people just not have patience to get to day when they want to have everything served at a plate… Can clearly see your frustration at this. But let it pouring of like a water stream. People have so much opinions about everything :)
I love when they show up on the internet loud and wrong, then delete their comments. Also, people are in love with complaining about things they don't pay for. It's madness.
Hey just want to say, I get where you're coming from and I don't disagree with anything you said. However I would be cautious as a youtuber to not get into a habit of making a video on a comment. I'm not making any assumptions, this is purely friendly advice. You're inevitably going to get people who disagree and argue even if you have the best written, formulated, credible sourced video, not every single viewer will have proper comprehension to understand. If you make a video and you have quite noticeably a lot of criticism that can be overwhelming to respond every single comment, I think a response video is appropriate. Except in this case, a video over arguing with 1 person who doesn't seem to grasp your content; doesn't justify the effort, time, energy and attention that the 1 viewer deserves. Lastly I also don't think you should openly say comments like that annoy you to the point of feeling the need to delete them. I'm not saying you are wrong or that your feelings are invalid, but not something you should let everyone know. There has been a history with RU-vidrs falling into traps of caring too much about hatful or rather dumb comments that it upsets them, and trolls see that it does bother them, and uses that as leverage to troll them even harsher. You're allowed to disagree with me. I don't expect you to be on board with me, but I hope that you can at least see my perspective. The most painful thing about having a social media presence is that you're going to have people hate or disagreeing with you with no good reason, but you have to not let it effect you.
What's next? You make a video discussing the intricacies of Frequency Response in microphones, and how the static graphs they often provide lack the nuance of detail that the varied frequencies at different amplitudes and SPL - so you come up with a clever way *visualise* those nuances, only to have someone come in and tell you that you should have used a microphone they owned, or done X or Y or blah blah blah... FFS, the entitlement some people throw around is astounding. They should be bloody grateful you're sharing your knowledge and wisdom FOR FREE in a world where so many people would try to monetise & gatekeep the same information. Some of us truly do appreciate you and your content mate, and some of us remain lurkers on many sites or in communities in order to simply avoid people like Mr Argument you talked about 🥲
