We are at the Barnes & Noble at the corner of 5th Avenue and 18th Street, where we have the opportunity to see a rare Imperial sidewalk elevator in action. Unfortunately, I was not able to ride the elevator myself, since it is strictly freight and is not operable from inside the cab. We start in the basement of the Barnes & Noble, where we see the loading area, and then turn around to see the interior of the elevator. Then, I place my camera on a box and face it upwards. From there, I go upstairs and the operator plugs in a controller and pushes a button to make the elevator go up. The way it moves through the sidewalk is through a set of metal double doors, which it opens with a skid on the top of its arch. The elevator has a 1000 pound capacity, is single speed, and is chain driven from a bottom drum motor. Enjoy the sight of this rare elevator (there aren't many in the city anymore), as well as the sounds it makes.
