World Airways MD-11 closely followed by a Lufthansa Cargo MD-11. Filmed from on top of a mound of old runway chippings. Manchester UK 28th August 2011.
I will always be partial to the L1011. I flew for TWA 1976 to 1990, survived the Carl Icahn strike of 1986/87, went on to fly for another US international flag carrier until my retirement. The L1011 remains over all the other aircrafts I was FAA certified on my favorite including the B747, B767, A330, B777.
I'm a huge fan of the L-1011s and the DC-10s, I used to fly on them a lot during the 80s and early 90s between Portugal and Brazil. Unfortunately, I never got to fly on the MD-11, but it still one of my favourite airliners! Sadly they're all disappearing. Fantastic video Simon, as always!
Aircrafts. Masterpieces of Engineering. Just to see the Rudder move, man, thats awesome. The complex mechanics behind that. Truly a marvel of modern Technologie.
I have been on one of these World Airways MD11s in 2005 when our plane which was taking us home from Barbados (BIWI flight) was broken! They cobbled a crew together to get us home! Not the most luxurious flight home from Honeymoon, but got us there in one piece!
Rare indeed, what a show stopper; the crowd at MAN knew. Thanks for sharing. Never flew md11 but Air Afrique dc10 always looked majestic on approach. Must be the simplicity in the design and that imposing power effect from third engine.
Wow thats rare!! I am a manchester spotter myself and well the Lufthansa MD-11F is rare to spot in the day and the World Airways MD-11 is just rare on its own in manchester! To spot them both at the same time would proberbly be one of the luckiest catches for any aviatior!
11-11 is the farewell flight for the KLM md-11 pax version. It will go for a flight from and to Amsterdam. So sad to see them go. At least we still have the martinair cargo...
These are the sharpest images I've seen on RU-vid for sure. And your night coverage of the Bangladesh plane feels like you are sitting in an airport lounge watching it all ... ensconced! Amazing production value here. I didn't look yet on the details above, but I'm wondering what camera you use. Cheers!
Man I miss seeing and hearing DC10's and L1011's so much!..you rarely see them in the USA now unless you catch a FedEx MD11 somewhere and I don't think you can even find an L1011 operating anywhere in the states these days-they're gone! It was my favorite bird to fly in & every time I traveled I would deliberately choose only Delta flights using L1011 equipment so I could still fly in one until they finally parked them forever..DC10&L1011's to me, truly are the most beautiful birds in the sky!
brilliant simon! i was there today you might of seen me on that mound i was wearing a grey hoodie, i saw you change places shortly after to that newish big mud mound great catch!
Not cargo, personnel. I can tell you for a fact that the US military had a contract with them to move people into the middle east theater I know, because I was on it twice in 2005 & 2007. Just saying
Everyonce in awhile World airways have done sub service trips into Manchester from canada, I've done a few of them. A millitary flt would never go into manchester. only militrary flt would be into Mildenhall with World. Also we have several md-11 cargo for the military
I was there that day flying out to Magaluf (was a Saturday morning) and seen the Luthansa Cargo MD11. Was sat in lounge with 2 hour delay to our Thomas Cook 757 which had engine maintenance delays :}
to everyone who is asking why they are so rare its because they have a third turbine located on the tail and they also dont carry passengers just frieght.
Amazingly beautiful. I´m counting the days now to bring my appliance to an end to become a pilot for Lufthansa. Next Summer, after my graduation, I will have to pass the second assessment test out of two. Who knows, where I will sit just in three years then... If I would have a billion Euro I would give it entirely away if they would let me fulfill my dream to fly for Lufthansa. I would do anything for it!
Well, what I see that is RARE is the people standing around filming right next to the planes taking off!! How lucky!! I would be with you!!! lol Love your vids, Simon...they are such great quality. Thank so much...liked and subbed.
Beauties :) I remember from childhood at home watching planes fly over my home (60-80 kms from airport), domestic flights were silent but DC-10's heading HEL-NRT were a bit noisy at full throttle still gaining speed and altitude, at good weather the tail engine was well visible :)
I'm appreciating your excellent vidography. I assume you are using a really nice camera (to it's full potential) and I imagine you've done this professionally. It is certainly of professional quality.
MD-11 & DC10 both land faster than any other aircraft due to the rear elevators. All the aircraft seem to land identical, by the looks of it a pretty windy day.
Awesome video Simon. Any idea what they were doing there? It doesn't seem like they were on the ground that long. I miss seeing MD-11's. I used to play with the FedEx styrofoam MD's when I was a kid, and told my parents I would fly a real one someday. Too bad they never got rid of their terrible reputation.
Lovely video. I would have bet that Manchester airport would have had one MD-11 in a day, but two? WOW! Did they have a sale on landing fees? Do you know why they came in? Unforcast headwinds? I love Manchester (Old Trafford to be exact) but would have not guessed they would have been able to take an MD-11. Again, lovely video. If you're able to tell us, I'd love to hear why they routed there, or if anyone else knows why.
I'm surprised that World Airways is still in business. I flew them in 1986 from Frankfurt to NY and it was the worst flight of my life. The 707 aircraft was in bad shape and the plane suddenly started to plunge and roll over the Atlantic. The captain was yelling over the PA system and we thought the plane was going to crash.
@GBAPCLAN ... No, no it isn't. The World Airways one was carrying passengers anyway. The rarity was in seeing two MD-11s within 5 minutes of eachother at Manchester.
Nice video man! Yes, they are really some awesome aircrafts. And they sound great as well! As you wrote Simon, they are rare. Last December I saw a DC-10-30/ER on OTP (Bucharest) from "Omni Air International". But it was so damn foggy so my photo was crap. Pity - cuz' they are cool.
How old is this video? I wasn't aware World was still around, and even less with an MD-11. Most airlines are dumping it. Too bad. Great airplane, but high maintenance. Notice on the LH take off, how the ailerons are turned into the wind to keep the right wing down. Excellent textbook crosswind take off technique. For some odd reason this model airplane was unforgiving, more so than others, for allowing the upwind wing to be lifted, especially on the landing. Great video, and great spot!!!
Was that a turbulent day? I've never been to that spot at Manchester...only to the airport pub but that's crap now the railing is there!! Never seen an MD11 there!
@@Habu2 Well this was a long time ago (11-12 years). I filmed both MD-11s landing on 23R, and then moved over to the threshold of 05L to film them taking off towards me. These videos are now all unlisted on my channel.
